Gaming veteran Chris Deering has said that triple-A rated new titles should be priced at £70 so that the industry can remain sustainable.
It was recently revealed that Activision's highly-anticipated Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will carry a recommended retail price of £55 when it is released this November.
This has led to a furious reaction from many fans about the high price, including some strong opinions being discussed on Digital Spy's Gaming forum.
Deering - a former president of Sony Europe who is currently on the board of Codemasters and the IGA - told MCV that the high cost of development in today's gaming industry will likely push the price of new games even higher in the future.
"Before there can be as many successful blockbuster games as there were in the past, games have to be produced in a more efficient fashion," he explained.
"In order to price the games at a level where they would support an industry like they did ten years ago, they'd have to be sold at £70. But people just don't have that kind of money, there's a psychological glass ceiling.
"Consumers won't spend more, but to write the game, publishers are having to spend more than ever before. That's the key problem."
Deering explained that the cost of development is now ten times higher than it was for the PS2 and 20 to 50 times higher compared to making games for the original PlayStation.
"Yet there are lots of things you can get for less than the relative value of paying 50p an hour for a very high-end game," he added.
would any of you mind paying £70 for a game?
i personally think games are mostly over priced anyway and would hate it if they started costing this much. i definitely wouldnt buy them

No i wouldnt!!!!! I also think most are overpriced. I dont buy games usually until they have come down in price anyway!!
Same here Debs.. I wait until the price comes down or buy second hand when others are finished with a game... I wouldn't dream of spending 70 quid on a game, there is other more important things the kids would need for that money
When Little BIg Planet came out i was bugged daily my connor for it! I waited and got it brand new from a play shops for £10!! it was over £30 when it came out! I find connor gets bored with games easily so no way will I buy at full price!
I bought a game for dave birthday a while ago that was £34, he finished it in under a week! Really not worth the money
£70 for a game? Hell no.
As far as I'm aware the PS3 hasn't been hacked whilst you can hack the XBOX 360 but not many have due to the complexity.
So to blame piracy as the reason is a load of bollocks. More like greed.

No way, got better things to spend my money on. What do you get out of a game? yeah they might be fun for a while but the novelty soon wears off when you get bored of it.

I feel the same. In fact, I don't buy games at all, apart from Guitar Hero being an exception. I remember when I bought Splinter Cell a good few years ago. I spent a whole week trying to get past Level 2 - I got so frustrated and angry! I don't see the fun in that at all. I got so bored and impatient.
We all see 'fun' in different things though I guess.

I have done. 20 years ago I paid £75 for Street Fighter game on the Nintendo Super Nes. It was for my nephew's Christmas he went on about it for weeks saying that if he only got one present for Christmas could that be it he wouldn't mind if everyone put money to it and he got nothing else. The day it was released, which was the middle of December I had just came of a night-shift and stood outside the shop in two waiting for 9am so I could buy a copy. The look on his face was on christmas morning was worth the hanging around the freezing cold. Even now 20 years on he still brings up that he can't believe I spent £75 on game for him.
Aww but thats really nice.
I mean I bet in the past my parents have spent loads of money on games for my brother maybe not £70 but still.
Me personally, I wouldnt spend that much and I dont think my brother would either
£40 is overpriced in my opinion. So £70, no. The proportion of the price of the console that games are now selling for is ridiculous. For some people the console is a one off purchase and they're not going to have the money to shell out every 2 minutes when a new game comes out.

I have been guilty in the past of paying full price for games the most being £50, then I discovered a shop called Electronics Boutique which is now trading under the name EB- http://www.ebgames.com/ and I started paying less for games. As they had pre-owned games some for half the retail price
