1. What made you join SoapBoards and how has your time on here changed over the years? I had been a keen fan of Eastenders, Corrie and The Bill for many years and I was really looking round for somewhere where I could discuss the programmes with like minded people when I came across this site’s predecessor (what was it called?) and it went from there. I’m not sure how my time on here has changed. I suppose as you get to know people a bit better you know how much ribbing they can take and you can be a bit more “daring” with some of the replies.

2. What are your Hobbies and how did you get into them? I’m not sure how you define a hobby as opposed to an interest. I suppose, as a hobby, I collect anything to do with Clacton (where I live now) – postcards, photographs, programmes, badges, other ephemera and the same with speedway. I am also well into genealogy and currently have over 1,700 names on my Ancestry Family Tree – the earliest going back to the 1540s.

3. Do you have any special talent or ability? I think my best talent is being able to write.

4. Do you have a favourite quote from literature, TV, a famous person, etc.? Explain why it is your favourite. My favourite quotation is from Lord Palmerston. His last words were, “Die my dear doctor, that’s the last thing I shall do.” It’s my favourite because it is just such a witty remark to make on your death bed. I hope I have all my marbles in tact like that when the time comes.

5. What do you consider your best physical feature and your best aspect of your personality? Physical feature: Please! This is a family forum you know! Personality: I would say my easy going nature and sense of humour.

6. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Lose weight.

7. Do you have a life philosophy? Is so, what is it? We only pass this way once so make the most of it. I also like to think of my blood group as a motto in life as I am B Positive.

8. What are the happiest and Saddest moments of your life? Happiest: The birth of my son. Saddest: The two saddest moments were the death of my parents.

9. What’s the craziest thing you've ever done? I’m afraid I don’t really do crazy. I suppose if I had to think of one it would be back in my college days during Rag Week when we managed to get a double bed on to the middle of a busy traffic roundabout in Norwich and several of us – men and women – in pyjamas and nighties either got in to the bed or stood around….until the police came and moved us on! See, I told you, I don’t really do crazy.

10. Do you have any regrets, if yes, what and why? Not really. I have had a good life. But I often wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t broken up with Liz back in 1973…

11. Who’s your Idol and why? Not sure I have an idol as such. But I do greatly admire Richard Dawkins. As an atheist myself I admire the way he sticks his neck out and tells the truth the way he (and I) see it.

12. If were an animal what would you be and why? A cat. What better life could there be than to be a well loved pussy cat?

13. If you were any object, what would you be and why? I would like to be an object of desire.

14. What quality do you like best in a person and what quality do you hate the most? Like: tolerance, a sense of humour, unselfishness. Hate: racists, bigots and the intolerant especially when they cloak their intolerance in a mask of religion.

15. If heaven exists what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? There is no god and there is no heaven.

1-If you could give the world one piece of advice, what would it be? Be tolerant of each other and value each other’s differences not use them as a cause to go to war.

2-What do you value most in other people? Tolerance, a sense of humour, unselfishness.

3-If you could choose one of your personality traits to pass on to your children, what would it be? Tolerance.

4-What is the best advice you've ever given and received? The piece of advice I always think about when anything seems to go wrong is something my dad always used to say and that is that “everything turns out for the best”. I find it usually does.

5-What do you see as your greatest achievement? Having 23 books published (at the last count).

6-How many jobs have you had in the past 10 years? From 2000-2004 I was the HR manager at The British Museum. From 2004 – now I am retired.

7- Who is your favourite historical person, and why? Galileo. He was a genius who got tortured by the Catholic Church for daring to say that the Earth moved round the Sun. He was very brave.

8- What do you find most interesting about our age of electronics and gadgets? Computers, email and discussion boards as well as making writing books so much easier.

Submitted by Peridta
1. Describe your typical day as a pensioner. Strictly speaking I am not yet a pensioner. I took early retirement and haven’t yet reached my state pension age. But my typical day is to get on to the computer to check emails and forums I am on. Then I will work on whatever I need to work on that day. I am involved in a lot of local activities – I am chairman of the local history society, vice chairman of the local theatre trust, chairman of the beach hut association, agent for our parliamentary candidate (which means that over the next three months or so I shall be almost exclusively devoting my time to this). If I’m writing a book I will either be researching or doing the actual writing. Towards the evening for a bit of relaxation I will probably do a bit of family history research. In the evening I am often out at a meeting or playing table tennis as a member of the mighty Nomads Leopards (currently 10th out of 13 in the Clacton & District Table Tennis League 3rd division!). Wednesday is entirely different as it’s our baby sitting day when we spend all day looking after our wonderful 2 year old grandson (3 on 2 March)..

2. Are you writing another book? My latest book (“Tom Farndon The Greatest Speedway Rider of Them All”) has just been published and is being launched on 21 February. I have just finished the one after that (“Behind the Colonnade”) and am now waiting for the proofs. This is due to be published in October. At present I do not have plans for any more books, but I hope to think up something soon.

3. Any plans for any more tv auditions? No actual plans, but I’m thinking about it.

4. Did you/Do you race in speedway competitions? No. Far too dangerous!

Submitted by Crazylea
1. Why did you pick the username Parkerman? My first name is Norman and I was named after a speedway rider called Norman Parker by my brother.
2. What kind of work do you do for a living? I’m retired now but I worked at The British Museum for 37 years.
3. You seem to like quiz shows, and must be pretty good at them, if you were to go on Mastermind what would be your specialist subject? I think my specialist subject would be The Savoy Operas followed by the Heavyweight Boxing Championship 1727 – 1970. (I once saw a Mastermind programme where the winner of the round took The Heavyweight Boxing Championship as his specialist subject. Although he won, I got more right than he did in both the specialist round and the general knowledge round!)
4. What's the best thing about living in Hackney (if you still live there )? I live in Clacton now. The best thing about living in Hackney when I lived there was that I lived in a prefab, one of a row of seven, built on a big open field with plenty of space. It was a great setting to live in considering the density of the housing round about.
5. If you could invite any 5 famous people to dinner, dead or alive, who would they be and why? Galileo, Lenin, Tommy Cooper, A.J. Hunting and Jamie Oliver. Galileo so I can tell him how much I admire him and ask him what it was like trying to get his ideas across against a background of intolerance; Lenin so I can ask him what he feels went wrong with his ideals and how his successor, Stalin, was so easily able to subvert the original aims of Communism; A J Hunting (and I realise I am pushing the bounds of famous a bit here) because I would like to ask him about the early days of speedway in Australia. A J Hunting was a pioneer speedway promoter in Australia where the sport began, but its origins are surrounded in mystery. He would be able to tell me how it all came about; Tommy Cooper so that we could have a good laugh if things started to get a bit too serious; Jamie Oliver to do the cooking so that we could have a good healthy meal.
6. What's your best memory? Being present at the birth of my son.
7. Have you got any guilty pleasures, and what are they? Continuing to watch The Bill in spite of everything (please don’t tell alan).
8. If you could do any job in the world, what would you do? I would do the one I did for 37 years.
9. What was your favourite subject at school? History
10. What's your favourite film? West Side Story
11. Have you got a favourite song? And what is it? I think it’s impossible to choose one song. It would change every time I answer this, but if I had to say one, it would be “Che gelida manina” from Puccini’s La Boheme.
12. If there was a movie about you, what would it be called and who would play you? Predictably I suppose I would call it The Norman Conquest and it would star George Clooney (!)
13. What's your dream car? I don’t really have a dream car. I’m not that worried about their looks or their workings. As long as they get me from A – B that’s all I care about.
14. What's the best holiday you've ever been on? Peru in 2006. It was fabulous. We spent three days in the Amazon Rain Forest, two days at Machu Picchu, four days at Cuzco and two days on Lake Titicaca as well as two days in Lima. It was wonderful. The people were so friendly and I will never forget the whole experience.
15. Do you collect anything? Yes, as mentioned above, memorabilia relating to Clacton and speedway mostly.

Whats your favourite soap? A difficult question! I think in general Corrie is my favourite because of its great sense of humour. I have a love/hate relationship with Eastenders. Sometimes it is just appalling. The stories are so contrived and the acting not always the best. But I wouldn’t miss an episode for the world. When they do do something well, they do it well!

What was your nickname at school? I didn’t really have one at school. But I was known as Norbold at college. It was a name made up by a friend of mine, Andy Sawyer, who was a keen fan of John Lennon and it was the sort of name he would have used in his book “John Lennon in His Own Write”, which was popular at the time.
