View Full Version : Your Top 10 Shows of The Noughties?

I read this article from the Guardian:

Channel 4 is to explore the television and music trends of the past decade in two new 90-minute specials to air at Christmas.

The Noughties - A Decade in TV and The Noughties - A Decade in Music will attempt to sum up the past 10 years in popular culture as 2010 approaches.

Changing television-viewing habits will be explored in the documentary, which will also include a nationwide poll of viewers' favourite shows to find the "greatest 10 programmes" of the decade, while the music show will look back at the some of the biggest acts of the past 10 years.

The two "big blue-chip pieces", which will feature clips and talking heads, will air in peaktime slots during the 2009 festive period.

Andy MacKenzie, the Channel 4 head of factual entertainment, said the shows would not just focus on the bestselling music artists or the most popular TV shows of the decade.

"When we looked at the bestselling songs or the top TV shows, they don't tell you what the noughties were about," he said. "The best TV might include The Wire, but it wouldn't appear as the most-watched show. It will be a cultural view with a wry look at what we actually want this decade to be remembered for."

Channel 4 has cut back on the number of list and talking head shows it broadcasts, but MacKenzie said he believed these new additions would be popular.

"We don't tend to do as many of these shows as we used to, but it feels like a good time to mark the passing of the decade," he said.

The two shows were ordered by factual entertainment commissioner Alistair Pegg and are being produced by independent production companies Mono TV and Princess, with Sean Doherty and Gary Monaghan executive producing.

This got me wondering. As we are nearing the end of the 2000s, what are everybody's Top 10 shows of this decade?

I will add mine later.

Here is my list (in no particular order apart from number 1) and my reasons why I chose these programmes.

1. Bad Girls - it was so gritty and realistic in the first couple of series and it really became a much talked about show, especially with Helen and Nikki hooking up at the end of Series 2. Their romance is one of my favourites of this decade. Despite it going downhill, it was still brilliant drama with some great acting performances from some of the best actors and actresses on TV. Who could forget Yvonne Atkins meeting the worst death imaginable?! Jim Fenner proved to be a great villain.

2. Lost - an original and innovative concept which has provided wonderful drama. The mysteries surrounding the island and the characters has kept me gripped and has left me wanting more. As soon as one episode finishes, I want the next episode straight away.

3. Spooks - I think it's one of the best dramas to come out of the BBC this decade. It never fails to shock and surprise - one of the most controversial scenes was with Lisa Faulkner and the fat fryer

4. The Street - A tightly constructed drama, with plots that make you easily empathise and sympathise with the characters.

5. The Apprentice - I started watching this quite late, but caught other past series on YouTube. Definetly my favourite reality show. It's good because all the candidates are working towards something and it's entertaining along the way.

6. Jonathan Creek - David Renwick is an excellent writer and I think this is one of his greatest works. The mysteries were clever, the chemistry between Caroline Quentin and Alan Davies in particular, was spot on. They bounced off each other perfectly providing many comic moments which balanced nicely with the drama.

7. Waking The Dead - I found this crime drama really different from all the others, as it focused on cold cases opposed to current crime. The cast are wonderful and Trevor Eve plays the troubled detective Boyd brilliantly. I cared for the cast so much that I'll never forget Mel Silver's tragic death, which had me in tears. It was so shocking but well done. :(

8. The Bill - Despite it probably having better decades, The Bill turned into a bit of a guilty pleasure for me during the Marquess era and now it looks set to become even better as it moves into the next decade in a post watershed slot.

9. The Inbetweeners - the only comedy that makes me laugh every minute. The portrayal of teenagers is realistic and spot on.

10. Casualty - Despite me watching on and off now, I did love Casualty in the first half of this decade. The stories such as Holly's stalker and the characters like Holly, Lara and Patrick kept me watching.

Yup that's right. As long as the show has still been airing this decade, then it's fine to count it.

For example, I included the Bill. Despite it starting years ago, it can still be counted as it's still been running this decade.

As a lot of people are replying, I might post the top 10 most popular shows that have been voted for on this board.

Sex Chips and Rock and Roll is one of the best series ever - can't understand why it's never been repeated, except on cable.
