i noticed on the front of a newspaper yesterday (cant remember which one) that some independant think tank (or something) has suggested that people start paying £20 per appointment to see their doctor, so that the nhs would have more funding. and that pensioners would have to pay for their prescriptions. they think it would stop people going to the doctors when they dont really need to
tbh i dont really like this idea. i dont really go to the doctors very often (i cant even remember the last time i went!) but dont see why i should have to pay to see one if im really ill, isnt it something we should have the right to do for free? especially as we have to pay for the prescription afterwards anyway!
what does everyone think, would you be happy to pay to see the doctor?
In Germany, you have to pay Euro 10 every quarter to see a doctor, the money goes to the health insurance, not the doctors. And of course you pay for the prescriptions too. It is so wrong to start charging that much to see your GP because really ill people will not get the medical help they need because they cannot afford it. :thumbsdow
In Germany and the UK you are lucky... For ages we have been paying €50 euro per visit to our GP

 That is outrageous  I never knew that.

It started in the 90's when it was 20 irish pound to see your doctor (free to medical card holders) and now it is 50 euro per visit! and you also have to pay 50 euro if you go to A&E for anything.
This was to stop the queues in A&E and doctors (they have since introduced free fee to working people who are below a certain wage and wasn't entitled to medical card)
Big corporations are pushing for private health care and this is one tactic via a 'think tank'. I suggest everyone watches sicko (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386032/) first.
No
Firstly you dont see them for long and secondly I never get an appointment straight away
This completely goes against the reason we have an NHS.
Exactly! I mean people complain about the NHS, but at leats things can be free
And anyone paying tax/national insurance contributions already pays for it anyway.

I never go to the doctors unless I'm dying as I can never get an appointment. Last year when Marley was ill with her consipation I tried to get an appointment but the first one I could get was a month away, I was told to phone every morning at 8am to check for cancellations it was pointless. Yet all the druggies get an appointment with a snap of a finger. I wouldn't have a problem paying if it was to improve our chances of seeing a doctor within a couple of days from taken unwell and if everyone had to pay the same amount, but that wouldn't happen hard working people would be paying for a service they can't use and all the dole dodging druggies will be reaping the benefits.
Phoning on the day for appointments is wrong. Its a lottery if you get an appointment. I remember ages ago phoning for an appointment only to be told I'd have to try the next day @ 8.30am to get an appointment. I told the receptionist I wasn't bothered when the appointment was as long as it was within a week. According to her, the system no longer worked that way. After a bit of verbal sparing she told me to take it up with the surgery.
So I popped in that day and there was a surgery manager to see me. WTF did a doctors require a surgery manager? That IMO is what's wrong with the NHS. Too many pen pushers bringing in rules that degrade the service. Anyway, after our 'discussion' they made changes allowing pre-booking of appointments and late opening on certain days to cater for those working.
The issue is with people not keeping appointments. Most of the booking is computerised so its not hard to see which patients keep appointments and which are non attendees. How hard would it be then to ask the non attendees for a deposit and not penalise those that can be arsed to keep an appointment, or are capable to call and cancel?
There is a notice up in one of our local clinics to make an appointment the day before you are ill
HOW do you know???
