True Blood is an American television drama series created and produced by Alan Ball. It is based on the The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris.

True Blood details the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps (meaning "good time" in French), a fictional small northern Louisiana town. The series centers on Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress at a bar, who falls in love with vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).

The first season received critical acclaim and won several awards, including one Golden Globe.

True Blood begins July 17 on FX and airs on Channel 4 from November.

True Blood co-stars Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin are engaged, People magazine reported today. Paquin won a Golden Globe award earlier this year for her portrayal of Sookie Stackhouse, a Southern belle in love with vampire Bill Compton (Moyer) on the HBO dark comedy. The pair, who have frequent, steamy nude scenes together, have been an item since February. No wedding date was announced.

Fresh from its run on FX UK, the superb True Blood finally arrives on Channel 4 and is sure to amass a legion of new fans with its tense yet funny storytelling and winning romantic intrigue. There will be skeptics out there no doubt grumbling 'oh no, not another vampire-themed show'. So here are ten reasons to sink your fangs into this superb slice of compelling drama set deep in Southern America.

1) The pedigree

The background of key figures behind and before the cameras is impressive. True Blood creator Alan Ball was behind the similarly morbid and hugely-lauded series Six Feet Under and scooped an Oscar for his American Beauty screenplay. The lead star Anna Paquin, who plays kooky waitress Sookie Stackhouse, also landed an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the tender age of 11 for her role in 1994 art flick The Piano, and won an army of fans playing Rogue in the X-Men movies. In addition, the source material for the series is The Southern Vampire Mysteries by award-winning novelist Charlaine Harris.

2) The naughtiness

Mainstream US television has some crazy censorship issues, whereby it’s fine to show numerous faceless characters being gunned to pieces in various action dramas, but the end of the world if there's a swear word or Janet Jackson has a wardrobe malfunction. Fortunately, True Blood is an HBO production and there’s an abundance of visual and verbal decadence to devour. The opening episode is quick to set its stall out by deploying the two 'c's very early on - 'c**t' and cunnilingus.

3) Whodunnit?

Evoking the compelling murder-mystery element of Twin Peaks, there’s a killer on the loose in the remote Louisiana town of Bon Temps. Video evidence suggests that Sookie’s decadent (and highly amusing) brother Jason is responsible, but several other suspects soon enter the fray. It’s great fun to do a bit of detective work of your own while watching the show, especially as the bumbling police officers in the show seem incapable of doing it themselves.

4) Sizzling chemistry

There’s plenty of bare flesh on display in True Blood, but there’s an authentic romantic spark between the two main characters Sookie and 173-year-old vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer). This taboo-breaking relationship is damn hot, which is hardly a surprise as they are an item in real life. After announcing their engagement earlier this year, Paquin admitted: "Obviously, if you're already with that person then you're not having to sort of get over the 'wow, I'm naked with someone that I don't even know the middle name of!'"

5) These are no ordinary vampires

Writer Alan Ball has cleverly created something new out of a very old idea. Instead of the usual crucifix-fearing vampires with no reflections, Ball’s take on the undead shatters the accustomed (and tired) mythology. The vampires of True Blood have actually been tricking the humans into thinking that such things are true, when they aren’t at all. Ball effectively sets up a new mythology, particularly with the special effects of vampire blood on the human body.

6) Clever socio-political allegories

The marginalisation and segregation of vampires in society echoes the way certain races have been treated in the real world, with many humans displaying a 'dislike for the unlike' attitude. Television screens across the town frequently show news footage featuring the pro- and anti-vampire campaigns dominating the political agenda.

Consumer culture is also satirised through the presence of 'Tru Blood' - a synthetic product designed to satiate the thirst of the vampires without draining any veins. It mirrors the ‘lite’ soft drinks on the market, proclaiming they have none of the calories and all of the taste - when we all know that the genuine article tastes so much sweeter.

7) Quirky humour

Away from the slaying and blood-sucking, plenty of hilarity ensues in Bon Temps. The distinctly Southern drawl of the seemingly backward locals constantly amuses, blood-dealing male escort and chef Lafayette is an absolute hoot, as is Jason’s desperation to hump anything vaguely resembling the opposite sex. Delicious moments of dark humour pervade the show too, such as one character’s pecan pie obsession in the immediate aftermath of a relative’s tragic death. Then there’s the satirical element, with trashy magazines featuring headlines like 'Angelina Adopts A Vampire Baby!'. Class.

8) Superb support

No, we’re not talking about Sookie’s push-up bra. Not since the days of Twin Peaks has a show established such a winning mix of appealing and intriguing supporting crew. The staff at the diner Sookie works at, Bill’s vampire acquaintances, Jason’s conquests and the hapless law enforcers all get a good look-in. Their backstories and true natures are gradually teased out as the season progresses. Keep your eyes on Sookie’s fiery pal Tara, whose psychological layers are stripped bare following her initial obnoxious presence on the show.

9) All flavour. No bite.

Merchandising and cult shows are inextricably linked, with playgrounds around the nation full of youngsters running round with replica Sonic Screwdrivers. True Blood has perhaps the coolest tie-in ever though, as an official drink entitled Tru Blood has just gone on sale in the US. Alas, the red-coloured beverage doesn’t actually seek to replicate the taste of human blood. Instead, it’s a sweet blood orange concoction. Fingers crossed it’ll be lining the shelves of Wetherspoons in the UK very soon. Quench your thirst and pay homage to your favourite show at the same time.

10) The promos

If Channel 4 has any sense, they’ll cunningly deploy the mega-stylish commercials that HBO have been using during the last couple of seasons. Here’s the best of them, created to promote the second season finale. Combining new Depeche Mode track 'Corrupt' with startling, specially-shot visuals of Sookie and the blood-strewn regulars is pure genius. It certainly looks like they’re staring down the barrel of a gun. Or fang.

At least one character will die on True Blood's upcoming third season, creator Alan Ball has confirmed.

Speaking to TV Guide, Ball was cryptic over the identity of the character, but said that "it's a person we'll be happy to see go".

He added: "Somebody is going to bite the dust and it's going to be really good to see them get what they deserve."

Previous deaths on the HBO show include Sookie Stackhouse's grandmother Adele, and maenad Maryann Forrester, who met a grisly end in the season two finale.

True Blood creator Alan Ball has revealed that he plans to introduce more gay characters in the show.

In an interview with Advocate, Ball said that season three of the cult series will also mark the arrival of the vampire king of Mississippi.

Ball said: "There are a lot of gay characters in the books as you get further and further into them. We'll be introducing some of those gay characters this new season.

"We'll be meeting the vampire king of Mississippi and his long, long-term companion - and by long-term I mean really long-term - Talbot."

He added: "I think Lafayette may meet a love interest, and certainly Pam, who works with Eric, she's certainly got a lesbian vibe. I don't know that that's all she is, but she certainly does seem to appreciate the women."

Ball also revealed that fans of the Charlaine Harris novels may not be surprised at the upcoming death on the show.

The One Tree Hill star has been cast as Alcide Herveaux, the new werewolf in town who cozies up to Sookie (Anna Paquin). In the casting call, Alcide is described as good-looking, rough-around-the-edges, articulate, heroic, and decent, but not what he seems.

In the closing moments of Season 2, Bill (Stephen Moyer) was kidnapped. This will lead Sookie to search far and wide for her lover when the show returns. If executive producer Alan Ball sticks to Charlaine Harris' novels, Alcide will be on the hunt with her on Eric's request.

Joe Manganiello has admitted that he cried when he won a part in True Blood.

The One Tree Hill actor, who will play a werewolf called Alcide in the third season of the drama, revealed that he has never missed an episode of the show.

"I'm not afraid to admit that I started crying," he told Entertainment Weekly. "I was just so excited. It's a dream come true.

"When I was a little kid, the nun at my elementary school said if you pray for something hard enough, it'll happen. And when it didn't happen, I kind of thought, 'You know what? Maybe this stuff doesn't work. Maybe I'm getting gypped'. So here it is 25 years later and my prayers got answered and I'm going to be a werewolf."

Manganiello added that he is trying to build up his muscles as he has an idea of what Alcide should look like.

"I'm a big guy to begin with," he explained. "I work out a lot anyway. In my mind, I see the character as having a big chest, big arms - ripped the way an animal would be. Vampires have a supernatural strength to them, so you can have a vampire that is a little slighter.

"But a werewolf is this big, powerful, half-man half-animal. I want to get as close to that as I possibly can."

"People seem to think that True Blood is going to be one of those shows that will run for five or six seasons if not more."

She added: "It's going to depend on audience ratings and stuff like that, but I can't imagine it not running for a long time because the books are just so juicy and Alan Ball has also made everything so vibrant, colourful and imaginative, and so I think it's going to be a show that people are going to be dying to watch for a long time."

Truth be told, season two of True Blood was somewhat lacking in the Eric Northman department. Heartbreaking scenes with Godric (R.I.P.) aside, TB2 was ruled by Maryann Forrester and her creepy dalliances with Demetri. Thankfully, the show's third run promises to feature more of Bon Temps' sexiest vampire as he battles Bill (for Sookie's heart), the Queen of Louisiana (over the V sales), and werewolves (more here). Itching for more info, Tube Talk caught up with Alexander Skarsgård for a quick bite.

Does Eric have genuine feelings for Sookie? Or is he doing it to get at Bill?
"He's intrigued by her, for sure. When he meets her for the first time, he knows there's something different about her and that intrigues him. He doesn't care too much for humans in general - he thinks they're pathetic - but when he meets her, there's something about her. He can't put his finger on it, but he's curious for sure."

It's not just a case of forbidden fruit?
"No – he's curious and he's not gonna let Bill stop him because Bill's just this little kid!"

Could Eric crush him in a fight?
"Bill? Oh yeah! Without a doubt."

Sookie aside, is there anyone else in the show at the moment that Eric would be a good match for?
"I don't know, man. He's already got his Pam - even though that's not a sexual thing, he's got his partner. For sexual attraction, it's all about Sookie."

How far into the third season will we see them acting on the attraction?
"I don't know - we start filming next month and I haven't seen the script yet! I don't know what's gonna happen. But it's building up..."

Alan Ball has hinted that the Queen of Louisiana will get her comeuppance this season. Will Eric have anything to do with that?
"They have this little business on the side so they'll definitely interact more I'm sure. Maybe they'll get punished for that - I don't know. I know less than all the fans on the blogs! I try to stay away from the fan sites because it's not good for me to read that stuff - it'll just freak me out!"

Werewolves will be arriving soon. Should the vampires of Bon Temps be afraid?
"No, I don't think Eric will be very afraid."

We've seen you naked a fair few times throughout the series. How is it filming those kinds of scenes?
"It doesn't really bother me that much. I've been naked in movies before so I don't really care about it. I grew up in Sweden so it's not a big issue."

Where would you like to see Eric end up by the season three finale?
"I just trust Alan and the writers - they're doing such a great job. I don't know where I want him to go. When reading the scripts, I wanna continue to be surprised and discover different sides of Eric. Hopefully we'll get to know him a little better."

How long do you see the series running for?
"I don't know - 45 years?! I'm having a blast, so hopefully we'll get to do it for a while. I love this show and my character."

True Blood returns for its second season Friday, February 26 on FX in the UK.

Mariana Klavena has revealed details about her return to True Blood.

Klavena plays Bill Compton's maker Lorena but refused to say whether her character was responsible for Bill's abduction at the end of the second season.

However, she told MTV that Lorena and Bill (Stephen Moyer) will have a number of scenes together in the third season.

"We do spend a good deal of time together in season three," she said. "I'm hoping that the fans will be a little bit surprised by it, because there will be some new dynamics in our relationship that are new and [have to deal] with that cliffhanger."

She continued: "I think you'll see some sides of Lorena that will surprise you. She'll be in certain situations where you think she'll do something and she will not."

Klavena promised more flashbacks and suggested that "succubus costumes" will make a return to the show.

She also hinted that Lorena and Bill's relationship will change.

"I think you can definitely expect much more turbulence between them," she said. "But it's not out of the realm of possibility for them to see each other in new ways. I don't know if they'll ever be at peace with each other, but there might be some real, heartfelt connection."

Alan Ball told Fancast that the show will focus more on how the vampires govern themselves.

He explained: "This year we get to look at the vampire political structure and how there's a shadow government that actually runs the figureheads of the real supposed vampire government, the kings and queens.

"They are more insidious and more bloodthirsty beyond that. I think that's a great metaphor for the fact that corporations run our own country and are willing to poison the planet for profits."

Ball also teased that there is "a big body count this season" and said: "There are several moments in season three where you'll see something you have never seen on television before."

True Blood returns on June 13 on HBO.

HBO has renewed the hit show TRUE BLOOD for a 12-episode fourth season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. Created by Alan Ball, the series will begin production of new episodes early next year in Los Angeles, with debut set for summer 2011.

"The new season of TRUE BLOOD is off to a terrific start, as enthusiasm for this unique show continues to build among both subscribers and critics," noted Lombardo. "We're looking forward to more chills from Alan Ball and his gifted team next year."

"I am beyond thrilled to be able to continue working with this amazing cast and crew," says Ball. "This is the most fun I have ever had."

Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, TRUE BLOOD takes place in the not-too-distant future, when vampires have come out of the coffin, thanks to the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood that means they no longer need humans as a nutritional source. The show follows the romance between waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people's thoughts, and her boyfriend, 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), who went missing at the end of season two, and is now the object of a frantic search. Alan Ball (creator of the Emmy(R)-winning HBO series "Six Feet Under") created and executive produces the show, which is based on the best-selling Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

The 12-episode third season of TRUE BLOOD, which launched June 13, has already inspired critical raves, with Entertainment Weekly calling it "faster, sleeker, more vicious, more fun than it already was," as well as "summer's best TV." USA Today hails the show as "fabulously wild," while the Washington Post describes it as "electrifying."

Rumours have suggested that werepanthers will appear in future episodes of True Blood.

TV Guide reports that the speculation began when a panther was photographed on the set of the show.

Fans have now suggested that the news could mean that Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) will be transformed into a werepanther as he is in the novels by Charlaine Harris.

Kwanten said: "I've been working with the panthers and they're a lot cooler than the wolves."

However, True Blood's showrunner Alan Ball refused to confirm the rumours, saying: "We have shot some scenes with actual panthers in the same way we have shot with actual wolves. But I won't say there are or aren't werepanthers on the show."

Meanwhile, Zap2It reports that Lindsay Pulsipher would not reveal whether or not her character Crystal, a love interest for Jason, is a werepanther as she is in the novels. She has previously appeared to deny the rumours.

"I can't answer that," she said. "You will have to watch and find out. I will say this. I get misquoted a lot and you know you just have to wait and see what happens."

True Blood continues on Sundays at 9pm on HBO.

True Blood‘s third-season finale airs on Sept. 12, and HBO has just released the perfect appetite-whetter. An extremely spoilery description of the Alan Ball-penned episode

“Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) grapples with his conscience while plotting his perfect revenge against Russell (Denis O’Hare). Fed up with being “vampire crack,” Sookie (Anna Paquin) considers a new life without Bill (Stephen Moyer)—or any other vampire. Tara (Rutina Wesley) discovers some surprising news about Sam (Sam Trammell), whose rage resurfaces upon learning of Tommy’s (Marshall Allan) latest transgression. Jason (Ryan Kwanten) finds a new calling after warning Crystal’s (Lindsay Pulsipher) family about an impending drug raid. Plagued by visions, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) turns to Jesus (Kevin Alejandro) for help, and learns his boyfriend has more to offer than companionship. Hoyt (Jim Parrack) hopes for a future with Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll), spurning Maxine’s (Dale Raoul) pleas to wed Summer (Melissa Rauch).”

The smitten couple - who started dating in 2008 and got engaged last year - exchanged vows in a romantic sunset ceremony at a private residence in California at the weekend.

Representatives for the newlyweds, who are also a couple in their TV show, told People: "Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin were married on Saturday evening in Malibu surrounded by their family and friends."

Anna, 28, and Stephen, 40, said 'I do' in front of some of their co-stars from the vampire drama including Sam Trammell and Carrie Preston.

Other celebrity guests at the nuptials, which apparently took place beneath a canopy across the street from the beach, included Elijah Wood, who Oscar-winner Anna co-starred with in comedy drama The Romantics.

Usmagazine.com reports that many of the guests brought wedding presents in purple boxes and wrapped with purple bows.

In True Blood Anna plays Sookie Stackhouse, a psychic, mortal waitress who falls for vampire Bill Compton, played by Stephen.

Nelsan Ellis ('True Blood')

It's fair to say the first season of True Blood ended on a huge cliffhanger, but fans dying to know what happened don't have to wait much longer - the second run begins in the UK on Channel 4 this week! To celebrate we caught up with Nelsan Ellis - who plays the wonderful Lafayette - to chat about the show and find out what's coming up. Be warned - there's a spoiler about the first Charlaine Harris book!

At the end of the first season, Lafayette was attacked. Where do we pick him up in the second?
"He lives! Lafayette lives. He's not entirely intact but he lives. He's been abducted. I can't say by whom, but he's been abducted and he's a prisoner in a dungeon somewhere."

Lafayette was very feisty and strong in the first season. Does being captured affect him at all?
"Absolutely. I think Lafayette prides himself on his freedom, or his self-proclaimed freedom to be who he is and to go to and fro at his will, so I think it damages his self-esteem to be completely powerless in the situation."

Did you enjoy playing that different side to him?
"Not at first. I was so used to the fun Lafayette. But then, yes, later, because it's always making sure he is as unpredictable as the show is in terms of his colours and to challenge people on his humanity is a good thing. And it makes the actor not get comfortable with one side of a character."

Does Lafayette recover from being captured or does it continue to affect him?
"It does affect him for a while, but he'll recover, because he's a survivor. He'll recover."

Lafayette's such a likeable character despite being a drug dealer and a prostitute. Do you like that he's not black and white?
"I love that he's not so black and white. I love the fact that [creator] Alan Ball has managed to make real people and make Lafayette into a real person, because we're not so black and white. He's a complicated human being and Alan Ball has managed to give me a palette and make it complicated without being overly complicated. I love the fact that he has all these colours and more colours come on, the more the season goes and next season you will see different colours out of Lafayette."

Lafayette's gay, but he's not a stereotype, is he? Have you had any reaction to that?
"I've not had a press conference with the gay community, so I can't really speak for the gay community! But various gay men have come up to say, 'I'm glad he's not a stereotype, but why does he have to be a prostitute? Because that's a stereotype. All gay men aren't sex-hungry'. They'll say that, but many of them like that he's a strong gay character, and they say they've never seen that before. He's completely fearless and multi-level. I had an interview with Logo one time and they just said that Lafayette had a huge gay following. It seems to be positive."

Do you think Lafayette will ever become a vampire or a supernatural creature?
"I think he will become a supernatural creature. I would love him to be a werewolf. I think vampire would be too on the nose. But I think werewolf would be so opposite to what you would think of Lafayette. It would be a dynamic colour for him if he was a werewolf. I mean, I know they won't make him a werewolf, but I do know they will make him a supernatural creature. I'm looking forward to that. I don't even know if he will become supernatural, I just expect him to."

Have you read the Charlaine Harris novels which True Blood is based on? Lafayette's quite different in the show, isn't he? Do you like that?
"I've read seven. I need to read the last three. When I read the first book and the second book, it made sense that that Lafayette died. You get this brief description of him and I just didn't like him because that character was so one-dimensional and stereotypical, that that Lafayette wasn't attractive. Alan Ball's Lafayette was attractive to me because it was so different. I was even like, 'How are you going to play it? How's he going to be masculine and feminine?' At first, I didn't quite know how to tackle what he was asking. It didn't make sense that Alan Ball's Lafayette would die in the same way the Lafayette in the books died. Because Alan Ball's Lafayette is such a strong person and he's so shrewd and so street smart and so much a survivor and so strong that it really would have had to take some scheming and something really supernatural to take him out. Because he manouevers in the supernatural world with ease - he's getting blood from vampires and selling it. He actually has got a connection with a vampire sleeping with him, using him for blood and selling it. I like Alan Ball's Lafayette much better."

Did you have much input into Lafayette yourself?
"I did. Alan Ball's a good listener. He hires you to play a part and he gives you a blueprint, but he wants you to fill it. He's not going to tell you how to fill it. He's going to tell you what he wants the infrastructure to be, but you have to fill the blood, the bones, the heart, the flesh, the mind, the soul, you have to do that. That's what he asks for you."

Going back to the second season, is there a main storyline running through the episodes?
"There's never a main storyline, because it's such an ensemble piece. I mean, Sookie's storyline is always the main one. That will forever be because she's the main character. So whatever her storyline is, that's sort of the overall theme, and then there's a plethora of other storylines within that. So it's her and Bill in the second season - the saga of her and Bill."

The second season of True Blood begins on Thursday at 10pm on Channel 4.

Put a stake in Alan Ball’s position as show-runner for “True Blood,” it’s almost done.

The creator of the hit HBO vampire/werewolf/steamy sex series will step down as the day-to-day mastermind of the show at the end of this summer’s fifth season, Ball and the network announced Monday night.

The 54-year-old executive producer, who helped usher Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse to the small screen, will stay on as an advisor on the show, assuming “True Blood” is picked up for a sixth season.

The move, however, frees Ball up to produce more shows for HBO and sister network Cinemax - which is airing his newest series, “Banshee”, which starts filming this spring.

“True Blood has been, and will continue to be, a highlight of not only my career but my life,” Ball said in a statement. “Because of the fantastic cast, writers, producers and crew, with whom I have been lucky enough to work these past five years, I know I could step back and the show will continue to thrive as I look forward to new and exciting ventures.”

Ball, still revered at the network for creating the drama “Six Feet Under,” turned “True Blood” into the network’s second biggest hit ever, after “The Sopranos.” The series stars Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgard.
