Christian Slater, who last fall played a superspy in NBC's short-lived My Own Worst Enemy, is in talks to front ABC's new Jerry Bruckheimer-produced crime drama.

In The Forgotten, Slater would fill the lead role of a former cop who heads up a team of amateur detectives. Among the character's baggage is the fact that his 11-year-old daughter was kidnapped three years prior.

British actor Rupert Penry-Jones (BBC's Spooks) played the role in the pilot. The Forgotten is also recasting one of the detectives, originally played by 24 alumna Reiko Aylesworth.

An ABC source says that Slater's casting is only a rumor at this point, and that no deal has been made.

The Forgotten premieres Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 10 pm/ET.

Christian Slater has signed on to The Forgotten, a new ABC crime drama from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, TVGuide.com has learned.

Premiering Tuesday, Sept. 22 (leading out of the Dancing with the Stars results show), The Forgotten revolves around The Forgotten Network, a team of amateur sleuths who work on cases involving unidentified victims.

As the synopsis from ABC puts it, "After the police have given up, this group must first solve the puzzle of the victim's identity in order to help catch the killer" — and thus help remember "the forgotten."

Slater will play Alex Donovan, a former lawman who heads up The Forgotten Network. The role was filled in the pilot by British actor Rupert Penry-Jones (BBC's Spooks).

Last TV season, Slater fronted NBC's short-lived My Own Worst Enemy, playing a superspy and his mild-mannered/unwitting alter ego.

The Forgotten is still not quite production-ready: The role of Linda, a homebody who serves as The Forgotten Network's resident computer wonk, is still being recast. She was played in the pilot by Reiko Aylesworth (24).

Elisha Cuthbert has joined the cast of The Forgotten in a recurring role.

ABC announced on Monday that the actress, who plays Kim Bauer on 24, will play Maxine Denver, a strong and successful Chicago professional who is forced to put her skepticism of "amateur detectives" aside when The Forgotten Network begins investigating a case close to home.

The Forgotten, which stars Christian Slater, follows a team of dedicated amateurs who work on murder cases involving unidentified victims after the police have given up.

Cuthbert's first episode will air sometime in February.
