View Full Version : Blackberry or iPhone
There's always been good debates about which one is better - the Blackberry or the iPhone. They are becoming more and more popular too, so I was wondering - which do you prefer, if you have a preference?
Personally, I have a Blackberry Bold which is my lifeline - I love free pinging (messaging) on it, aswell as the push functions, and all the other norms, plus the fantastic battery life that my husband has found the iPhone has not - he loves the phone, but to me, its basically an iTouch with phone functionality - nothing else really seems that different to me, and with the bad battery life, I don't like it and when upgrade time is here, I'll be sticking with the Blackberry.
What about you guys?? Any preferences??

iPhone :) x
I have an iPhone, but only because it was the best gizmo at the time. I hate the fact that Apple like to control what you can and can't do with the phone, so the first thing I did was jailbreak the phone. The other major gripe is that Apple delivered a phone that couldn't perform basic functionality like forward sms, MMS, full bluetooth amongst a host of other non-implemented features. Most have been rectified in the latest firmware, but too late in my books. Other phones are catching up on the UI, and it won't be long before I ditch the iPhone.
The Blackberry I've never liked. Push email - wow (sarcasm - not directed to OP, but to the concept). Push technology is over hyped and I, for one, do not want my life to be dictated by corporate emails 24/7.
EDIT: as the original question was about which one I prefer ovr the two, it would be the iPhone

No offence taken
I thought it hilarious that I couldn't send an MMS to hubby - a simple task that an "all singing, all dancing" iPhone couldn't do, forwarding SMS's etc - as you said, the latest firmware upgrade is enabling that, but it should have been basic functionality available from initial release, not something having to wait 3 iPhone versions later for.
Push email I was using as an example as iPhones have the same capabilities, so there's no difference there, but I do find the keyboard far easier to use on the BB than on the iPhone, but that is down to personal preferences. I'm luckily not bound by corporate email, but unfortunately, running your own business does require contact pretty much 24/7 especially when hubby is working 16 hour days, and working from home with a lot of children, makes laptop time limited.
I charge my BB once a week, whereas hubby has to charge his every day, which doesn't seem great, and he had to pay out for a new FM modulator for the car/van because the old one he had been using with his nano for a few years, wasn't compatible with the iPhone.
The one thing I do need to find out is whether there is a firmware upgrade allowing BB's to be compatible with N technology wireless, as the last time I tried, it wasn't, so had to revert back to B/G
Yeah, thats another thing thats royally pissed me off. The incar iPod Video cradle I had installed will play the content of the iPhone but not charge. Why?! Is the same connector!
Won't charge the new Nano either - my eldest plugs his into my car cradle - plays the songs, no charging though
This is interesting, I need a new phone and would like one that interfaces with the ical on my macbook and my hubby's imac.
Is an iphone my only option? He has a blackberry, and I have an ancient old phone and a paper diary.
I'd be very surprised if there wasn't stong integration between the iPhone and all Apple notebook products. Other phones will probably support it via 3rd party apps, but don't hold your breath.
Its the iphone for me. The beauty is its simplicity. I agree though that battery life is appalling. I use mine as much for the ipod features as the phone. I love the web access on it as well as being able to store loads of music and movies.
I am a gadget phreak and doubtless when my contract comes up for renewal I will go for the latest all singing all dancing whatever.
As an aside. Since I have owned the iphone its made me keen to get a Mac Airbook. Just a slight pity the Bank balance is more geared to a Sinclair ZX 80
The airbook look cool, but is it functionally any better than the macbook? (I love my macbook!)
My elder son wants a macbook pro, but my younger son has just sold his mac mini on ebay and built a new computer with components he bought off the internet.
Don't ask me how he did it but for £400 he has a computer that is both a pc and thinks it is a macbook pro. He has two hard drives one runs apple stuff and the other vista.
Hubby has stuck with the imac.
I think that I might go for the iphone, but tbh, I never use my ipod - too much hastle taking out my hearing aids and then putting them back in if anyone wants to speak with me so that functionality is kind of wasted on me.

Your son has made a Hackintosh  I have one as well, just for the sake of it.
Ironically, I hardly use my iPhone for music or calls. A bit texting, net surfing and the odd game now and then

Are you the person that developed Grinder? :lol:Couldn't believe what I was hearing on TopGear!

Hackintosh - that is what he calls it too! I was really concerned that he was selling a computer that works, and using all his birthday money to do this - but it only took him a day (after all the components arrived)and it seems to work fine.
What 15 year old boys get up to these days.

LOL I think you know me better than that. I nearly choked when I saw that. Its like a Gaydar for the iphone. Now if there was one to show up available females in the area I might be interested.:rotfl:
Well, hubby bought me an iphone this afternoon!
Synched it with the imac and my calendars, music, photos address book, home email account - everything is all on the phone in less than 5 minutes!
Fabulous!
Congratulations, you are obviously one happy lady and quite deservedly so :)
Even better - it plays bbc iplayer and I can access soapboards!
Also, it I touch a contacts address a map pops up showing the address - and directions from where I am - how cool is that!
Sounds fantastic, has got me wanting one for myself now :D
This will be my next phone - adios iPhone!

Haha :D just bought one from the 02 shop. I am getting worried though, as I need to connect the phone to my Itunes and my laptop has a habit of crashing whenever I connect something to it and try and transfer documents from my laptop onto something else! I will be so angry if it crashes!
see i'd get an i phone but the pay monthly tarrifs are rubbish on it! 75 texts and 120 minutes, for £30 quid a month, i don't think so!!!

Mine is £34 per month for 600 minutes and 500 text  (That is for a 24 month contract, though)

oh i hate contracts, had a bad experience with orange a few years back so i just got a PAYG its a lot easier
my current contract i get unlimited texts and 600 minutes for 15 pound a month from orange (was meant to be 30, but becuase i'm a "valued and loyal customer" they offered it to me for 15 pound) there's not much chance im gonna switch to any other network in a hurry with a contact like that. i just wish the i phone would become avaible to Orange customers. I'm sure it will sooner or later.
I really want an i phone, i keep seeing people with them! i do still have an issue with how bad a deal you get in regards to calls and texts with 02.
I'm tied into my contract with Orange until next summer (damn 18 month contracts)! But after then I will see whether or not it's worth switching to 02 to get one.
btw do you get acess to the internet anywhere anytime for free with the i phone? that would be perfect for a facebook whore like me!

Unlimited internet access included in the £34. They have a cool Facebook App that is really easy to use, too :D
I do not have the very, very latest phone, though. But I am really happy with the one I have, and it is fab if you get lost - you can pull up a map and it shows you where you are, lol. Excellent for a rubbish map reader like me!

i wondered if you'd be charged for using the apps like Maps etc. I know you have to pay to get certain apps, but once they are there you dont have to keep paying do you? I presume if you exceed your phone/text limit you just pay the extra to 02 when your bill comes?

The only extra I have had to pay so far is for phone numbers starting 08 (i.e. my bank and scottish gas, honestly!).
Some apps are free, others range in price from £0.59 - £5.99, with the vast majority being around £1 -£2.
You don't have to pay again.

The iPhone is coming to Vodafone and Orange. You can register interest with Vodafone on their website, it's out early next year. Not sure when Orange is bringing it out.

Vodafone (http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-phone/iphone-3gs)
Orange (http://newsroom.orange.co.uk/2009/09/28/orange-to-sell-iphone-in-uk/)
Think I might get one myself if it's not ridiculously expensive. Hopefully with three providers in the market, the price should come down a bit.
prices will fall drastically, there will be a price war between them, i hope Orange is reasonable enough!!! :D man im so so excited, might ask for an I phone for my 21st!
I needed a bigger storage I pod, i might just wait and get a big storage i phone and kill two birds with one stone!
for those who have the iphone, what size capicity one did you buy? see i know that i have A LOT of music, and my main concern would be that if i put too much music on there it will slow the phone down or make it crash, as i've heard i phones are tempromental at the best of times???

IPhone 3G and 3GS handsets will be available to Orange customers from 10 November, marking the end of a two- year exclusive deal with operator O2.
Orange said it would offer the handset to pay as you go, pay monthly and business customers.
Customers taking out 24 month contracts worth £30 or £45 a month will get the handset for free.
The Orange tariffs are very similar to O2. The cheapest 24 month contract is £34.26, compared with £29.36 with O2.

Tesco Mobile is to stock the iPhone 3GS and 3G before Christmas, the supermarket giant has revealed.
Tesco Mobile, a virtual operator on O2’s network, has bagged the iPhone 3GS, and while a release date has yet to be announced, the pre-register landing page is already live.
The supermarket chain also revealed that the device will be available on both PAYG and pay monthly.

Ouch that's a long old contact time, no thanks
I have an E71, so similar to a BB. I prefer having a full built in keyboard, or I'd just end up abusing the screen! iPhone's look cool and fun, but I know I'd get addicted in the end!
im sorry but does anyone else think the i phone contracts are really bad value for money!?!?!?!?!

Apple screws the service providers so there's not much leeway.
I hate 18 month contracts and now they are trying to force 24 month contracts.

They are. All you're paying for is the brand.
I dont like contracts full stop, ill always be PAYG
Contracts are better value for money. I save between twenty and eighty pound a month by being on a contract. You don't pay the extortionate 40p for the first minute of the first call each day for a start. I wouldn't be able to get the same usage out of my phone on PAYG for the money I pay.

Marley is wanting an iphone for her birthday.
Make the switch Bry - turn to the dark side
ive gone back to my original decision to get an Iphone. Im so indecesive it's ridiculous. But my parents have agreed to pay for half of my contract, and deep down i've always wanted an I Phone so i think i will get one. can't wait for the end of the month when i can upgrade :)
it's going to be annoying having to charge the phone every night, but i can live with that i guess, do i phones come with chargers or do you have to buy them seperatley? and the 500 text limit, i've found out you can send free texts to other iphone/ i pod touch users from a free app, so i guess that solves that problem!
so excited for getting my i phone, ive already been downloading apps and sorting out my Ical, so that i'm ready and raring to go when i get it!

Yes iphones come with chargers, ...dont all phones come with chargers??
i only ask because i pods dont come with chargers, and i know what apple are like for ripping people off when it comes to buying acessories. i cant believe the cases for the i phones are like £25!!!! shocking!

You might not be able to get messenger with it being a Windows product and the iphone being Apple.
