8th July

Sergeant Smith (Alex Walkinshaw) and P.C. Ben Gayle (Micah Balfour) are on patrol when lorry driver Babur Sherdil (Dana Haqjoo) breaks suddenly in the middle of a road, jumps out of his vehicle and runs away. Ben chases after him while Smithy opens the back door of the lorry and is knocked to the ground by a group of Afghan males, making a break for freedom. Smithy is about to give chase when he hears a young girl, Jala (Hannah McCall) crying for help while trapped under some heavy boxes. As Smithy struggles to free her, the boxes shift uneasily and he manages to release her just as they come tumbling down. Smithy ventures back inside the van to try and free her father, Jaweed, but he is too badly injured and later dies in hospital. Later, as Smithy scrubs his hands clean of Jaweed’s blood, he determines he will get justice for Jala…

Back at the station, translator Sammy (Nasser Memarzia) helps the officers interview Zemar (Sharif Dorani), one of the men who escaped from the van. Sammy also translates for Jala, but the young girl later tells D.C. Stevie Moss (Lucy Speed) that Sammy told her to lie. Jala tells the D.C. that she came to England with her father to live with her aunt, Ara Byat (Pooneh Hajimohammadi), who is eventually traced and reunited with Jala. Later, Smithy demands to know why Sammy encouraged Jala and Zemar to lie. Sammy admits he sensed they were involved in a dangerous situation and was trying to protect them. All Sammy knows is that the driver who ran away collects rent for a landlord on the Westgate Estate and Smithy is stunned to hear that the landlord is Jason Devlin (Guy Flanagan)…

Smithy realises that the Devlin’s are clearly involved in a people trafficking operation and that he needs to get the Afghan community to trust the police in order to obtain evidence. Sammy takes the Sergeant to a local refugee centre where he eventually breaks down the barriers and convinces the Afghans that he is there to help. Afterwards, Smithy walks back to the Westgate Estate with a group of people from the centre and is horrified to see Jason and his heavies turfing illegal immigrants out of his properties. As residents start to fight back, the situation quickly escalates and a full blown riot kicks off. Back up is called for and in an attempt to protect Jason, Stevie runs to the other side of the estate with him. Stevie quickly notices a suspicious looking holdall in Jason’s car and as she attempts to investigate, Jason viciously attacks her. Smithy, attempting to control the riot with Sergeant Stone (Sam Callis), sees the attack and in a blind rage, races over to Stevie, who has been beaten unconscious. Smithy grabs Jason and with unstoppable force, begins to beat him. Stone is stunned when he witnesses Smithy, covered in blood and panting over Jason’s unconscious, limp body.

9th July

Sergeant Smith (Alex Walkinshaw), pale and shocked, stands over the badly beaten body of Jason Devlin (Guy Flanagan). A stunned Sergeant Stone (Sam Callis) appears on the scene and immediately races to D.C. Stevie Moss (Lucy Speed), who has been beaten unconscious by Jason. Calling for an ambulance, Stone grabs Smithy and tells him to get his story straight. Later, Smithy visits Stevie in hospital where she tells Trainee D.C. Will Fletcher (Gary Lucy) that Smithy saved both hers and Jasons lives, leaving the Sergeant feeling guiltier then ever. Back at the estate, Jason’s car is examined and the officers discover that the black bag Stevie was trying to examine before being attacked by Jason is full of stolen jewellery from Afghan immigrants. At the station, D.C.I. Jack Meadows (Simon Rouse) asks Smithy if he knows who beat Jason up and after pausing for a second, Smithy says he didn’t see anything. Stone gives him a discreet nod of approval, but Smithy knows that he could now be in serious trouble. Back at the hospital, Jack visits Jason, who has regained consciousness and claims not to remember anything about his own attack, or that of Stevie’s. However, Jason’s father, Matthew (Danny Webb) tells the Inspector that he wants whoever attacked his son, behind bars…

Elsewhere, CID discover that Jason was tipped off about the police heading to the estate by Khaled Hasiq (Leeshon Alexander), who is in a relationship with Jala’s aunt, Ara Byat (Pooneh Hajimohammadi). A search of Khaled’s flat reveals that he is clearly working with the Devlins when a notebook is found, relating to the Devlin’s trafficking operation, along with a list of all the missing jewellery that was found in Jason’s car. Khaled is brought in for questioning but he doesn’t give anything away until Smithy brings Ara into the interview room. Seeing how hurt and betrayed she is, Khaled breaks down and admits that Matthew is running the trafficking operation, but without hard evidence, Jack knows they have a fight on their hands to prove it. Hoping that Matthew will crack when they arrest Jason on suspicion of receiving the stolen jewellery, Jack is stunned when Jason tells him he wants to make a formal complaint about Smithy, who he claims beat him up and planted the jewellery in his car.
