Tom Cruise has signed up to reprise his producing role for the fourth Mission: Impossible movie.

The actor has starred as secret agent Ethan Hunt in all three movies of the action franchise, and has co-produced the trilogy, which has grossed $1.4 billion (£930 million) worldwide.

And while Cruise has not yet confirmed he will take on the tough guy role again, he is re-teaming with director J.J. Abrams to co-produce the fourth instalment, which is slated for a 2011 release.

Tom Cruise wants his wife Katie Holmes to play a villain in the next Mission: Impossible movie, according to reports.

The actor, who plays spy Ethan Hunt in the films, has apparently said that he would love to work with Holmes on a film where they don't play a couple.

A friend of Cruise is quoted by MSN as saying: "Tom is very excited about taking Mission: Impossible in a new direction and he sees Katie as a big part of that."

They continued: "They have wanted to work together for a while now but the idea of being a couple on screen in a romantic comedy is a bit dull."

The source added: "This might give them a chance to have some fun both as a couple and as hero and villainess."

Paramount has confirmed an initial report from DeadlineHollywood.com that Tom Cruise is attached to star in Mission Impossible IV. He will also produce the film, which will bow over Memorial Day weekend in 2011, with J.J. Abrams, the director behind the last iteration of MI. The studio is currently out to directors and as previously announced, Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec has been hired to write the script. The duo previously worked with Abrams on his ABC drama Alias. Script details are being kept under wraps and no start date has yet been established though Cruise is planning on making this his next project.

His latest film Knight & Day bows in July. MI:IV will be co-financed by David Ellison’s Skydance Productions.

Despite Paramount’s concerns over Tom Cruise’s wobbly box office appeal, the studio is going ahead with Mission: Impossible 4, and now appears to be looking for some younger talent to appear alongside him, with Anthony Mackie, Kevin Zegers and Chris Egan all apparently testing for roles.

According to The Wrap, they’ve either all screen tested for unknown roles, or are about to, though Paramount’s only comment was to offer a denial of the story. So take that as you will.

The usual steel lock of secrecy has fallen upon the film with producer JJ Abrams keeping everyone from talking with the power of his mind. Or a nondisclosure agreement – but we prefer the first option.

What we do know so far is that Brad Bird is on line to direct a script by Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec, and that both Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg are locking in deals to reprise their roles from the previous film (or films, in Rhames’ case).

Mackie’s still probably best known for The Hurt Locker, though he also cropped up in Eagle Eye and Notorious. Egan wooed Amanda Seyfried in Letters to Juliet and Zegers has appeared in the likes of Transamerica.

It was no secret that if Paramount Pictures was going to bring Tom Cruise back to star as Ethan Hunt in "Mission Impossible 4" he was going to need some help. As demonstrated by the disappointing results this summer of "Knight and Day," Cruise's starpower has understandably diminished with time. But, instead of a reboot, Cruise is back for one more assignment and now Jeremy Renner, if he chooses to accept it, will join him in Brad Bird's live action debut.

HitFix has learned "The Hurt Locker" star is in negotiations to join the new "Mission", but isn't completely on board the project. If he signs, "MI4" will be the second high profile gig Renner has landed since being nominated for Best Actor for his acclaimed performance in "Locker." In July, Renner took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con as part of the ensemble cast for Joss Whedon's "The Avengers." Renner will make his superhero debut as Clint Baron, aka, the marksman Hawkeye. The actor will also getting considerable buzz for his role in Ben Affleck's "The Town" which screens at next month's Toronto International Film Festival.

Production on "MI4" is expected to begin this fall.

Paula Patton has landed the coveted female lead in the fourth Mission Impossible film.

The US star, who won accolades for her role in Precious, was screen tested for the role of Tom Cruises's sidekick alongside actresses Kristin Kreuk and Lauren German, reported Deadline.

She'll play an up-and-coming agent who gets to work alongside Ethan Hunt (Tom) in the next instalment of the hit action franchise.

Paula - who is married to R&B crooner Robin Thicke - will join The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner, whose role in the film was recently announced.

Ethan Hunt's fourth outing will not be called Mission: Impossible 4 but will, according to Tom and writer JJ Abrams, be a franchise reboot. Production will kick off in the autumn, with a release date expected in December 2011.

You can add another member to the cast of the Brad Bird-directed, Tom Cruise starrer Mission: Impossible 4, and not only is it the villain, but it’s a strong choice for that role. Michael Nyqvist, best known for portraying the equally strange-to-pronounce named Mikael Blomkvist in the Millennium Trilogy, will be taking on the role of “one of” the villains in the fourth installment of the franchise. This announcement comes from THR (via FirstShowing), and is exciting news.

Mission: Impossible 4 is scheduled to open December 16, 2011.

Tom Cruise has revealed that the fourth Mission: Impossible film will be titled Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.

The actor said that the movie will include filming of the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai but would not add any further details.

He told Collider: "I'll be spending many days, many hours on the side of this building. I can't give you details, but I will be up there."

In addition, Ghost Protocol will be the first high-profile production to be set mostly in Dubai.

Director Brad Bird commented: "We love the fact that it's a big, new city, that it hasn't been photographed very much…It's almost like sets that you could never afford."

Cruise was also questioned about a Top Gun sequel, to which he replied: "Those things are a long way off. It takes a long time to figure out stuff."

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol is due for release in December 2011.
