As fire officers hose down the embers of the ‘E1’ bar, D.S. Max Carter (Christopher Fox) and D.C. Stevie Moss (Lucy Speed) are updated by Sergeants Smith (Alex Walkinshaw) and Stone (Sam Callis). They tell them that a woman was seen fleeing from the scene while Fire Investigation Officer Linda Preston (Katherine Kingsley) informs the officers that the blaze was deliberate. Stone and Smithy question barman Pete Copperfield (Felix Scott), who was living in the flat above and suffered smoke inhalation. He doesn’t recall much, but makes it clear that bar owner Jason Devlin (Guy Flanagan) has many enemies. Stevie and Max interview co-owner and Jason’s father, Matthew (Danny Webb) who provides solid alibi’s for both he and his son. As the case continues, the officers discover that the woman seen running from the fire was Jason’s girlfriend, Abi Nastase (Edyta Budnik) and when she is eventually caught by Smithy, he discovers burns on her arms. Abi tells Smithy and Stone that she tried to rescue Pete from his flat: they have been having a secret affair and is terrified violent Jason will find out…

At the burnt-out bar, Linda and C.S.E. Eddie Olosunje (Jason Barnett) discuss what could have caused the fire and Linda tells the officers that cocaine was found in Pete’s flat, along with forged identity documents for Abi. Confronted, Pete insists he doesn’t know anything about the items, even when Stone, much to P.C. Ben Gayle’s (Micah Balfour) discomfort, threatens to tell Jason about the affair. Later, when Abi is found badly beaten, Ben confronts Stone with his suspicion that he told Jason about the relationship and Stone is furious by the accusation. At the hospital, Abi finally reveals that Pete was involved in a drugs deal with a local dealer, to raise enough cash for he and Abi to run away, but when the drugs disappeared, Pete couldn’t pay up. Later, when Pete is questioned, he admits that he obtained false papers from an associate of the Devlin’s and that Matthew, knowing he was having an affair with Abi offered Pete £5,000 to disappear …
Elsewhere, Smithy and his officers discover that the Devlin’s are also East End landlords and are stunned when they visit one of their overcrowded, unsafe slum tenements, full of illegal immigrants. Back at the station, officers are surprised when Matthew turns up to make a statement which puts both him and Jason in the clear for any involvement with the fire, drug dealing or the forged documents: the Devlin’s are going to walk free again. Smithy, watched by Stone, can barely contain his anger when a smirking Jason leaves the station. Can Smithy draw the line between professional police work and personal vendetta...?
