View Full Version : Toilet Training
Can anyone give me some tips please??? My youngest turned 3 yesterday and he isn't yet toilet trained. I am not overly worried to some extent and happy to wait for the summer hols when I will have 6 weeks to try and get him dry during the day, but he is starting to get rash's and sore bits, and as soon as he has a wee starts playing with himself as he obviously doesn't like the feeling of being wet. I have tried sitting him on potty every hour, toilet also. He goes to toilet with his older brother and dad, but all to no avail. He can't relax and "let go" and as soon as his pull ups are back on, he immediately wees, pretty much filling the pants so I have to change them straight away. My eldest is 11 so can't remember how it went with him, although I seem to remember it was all very quick and simple. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Should I wait till summer hols, or really perserve now (although it does upset him occasionally when he doesn't want to sit on the potty, though how many 3 yr olds want to sit still for 2 mins!!!) :searchme: :searchme:
They, people in general, say that it is easier to train in the summer cause it is not cold.. Going to the bathroom with another male help, if he can see them do it, then he is more likely to follow by example... Do you have a nephew who is trained that could help him.. that is how my daughter trained, my niece use to show her and tell her that she need to be out of nappies to be a big girl...
Ciaran is a follower - if daddy goes upstairs to the toilet, he has to go too, if his elder brother goes, he goes too, even if I go, he has to come with me. He also sees a lot of friends sitting on the potty, and then if I try to encourage him to do the same, he gets all panicky. I know he will do it when he is ready in the end, but its health things that are concerning me, like his fungal infections that keep appearing, which even hourly changing doesn't help.......its costing me a fortune in pull ups which doesn't bother me, but there must be a happy medium somewhere??

Instead of getting him on a potty, get him a step up to the proper toilet.. let him use it like his dad and brother and just be patient, don't let him use the pull up until night and keep changing as necessary.. that is the best I can offer... I hope he will be ok and doesn't get any sever infections
Thanks Siobhan - I think perseverance is the key, without putting too much pressure on him.

I also put a sticker of a ball in the pan of the tiolet and said he had to try and hit the ball..sounds daft but it worked.

My brother is three and mum is going to train him after the holiday for to weeks this month, This way it will be easy for her just to put nappy's or then he wont even wear anything!!
My terrible two were both out of nappies and potty trained when they were 2 so I was really lucky with them :)
Hopefully it will be the same with this baby. I don't think it should be too much of a worry if at 3 they're still in nappies however I think you should start them potty training.
I would recommend the clip on toilet seats for use with a normal loo. These let you child feel like a big boy without worrying that they are going to fall down the loo!
My youngest didn't like the potty at all, he wanted to use the same toilet as his big brother. Again I was lucky both my boys were dry by 2, but everyone is different.
Just wanted to let everyone who helped advise me that for the past 4 days, Ciaran has only been wearing normal pants (except for a night obviously) and has been peeing on the potty!!! :cheer: :cheer: This morning he has even started telling me that he needs to wee, rather than jumping about, and has done 2 already this morning. Wanted to thank you all for your advice...
hi guys thought i would revive the potty training thread,
just wondering how old you think is best to introduce the potty to a child?
i was thinking of getting one and just leave it in the front room so niamh gets used to seeing it.....what do you think?
she is nearly 18 months....do you think this is too young????
help guys ..please!!!!
I would leave it in the room so she can see it and get used to. If nothing else, she would get to see that it isn't a monster or anything to be scared of. Then just see how she reacts with it - just don't feel concerned or panicky if she isn't trained before 3 - Ciaran was over 3 before he would even consider it, and now he uses the toilet and is already dry at night
I did end up with about 5 different potties though, as some of them Ci just wouldn't go to, and then we went and bought one together in the end - he chose it and from then on he used it - that seemed to work too.
18 months is classified as the age when the child can properly attain bladder control, though some do it before and others much later - so you're not too early, just see how she goes and wait a bit if need be... Good Luck :D
I have 2 boys, and they can be slower than girl in potty training. My eldest was dry at 2 years ( although he was still in pull ups at night for a little while longer). My youngerst was totally dry at 18 month. He refused to use the potty and had a clip on toilet seat. He wanted to be like his big brother, and I thiink that he really benefited from watching his brother. I think having a potty around is a good idea, I would tend to keep it in the bathroom though and let your child sit on it when you go to the loo. She will get the idea quickly enough!
the reason i ask is that i had big problems with niall and it took until he was around 3 1/2 until he was dry!!!!
i might get her a potty abd just let her get used to it, someone did tell me girls were easier than boys.......fingers crossed!!!!!!!!! she is 18 months on 26th of this month o i might get her a potty when i go shopping next, they have got a really cool winnie the pooh one in argos that flushes!!!
i can't really keep it in the bathroom as she can't get there on her own as it is all stairgated, my other prob is that she is at a childminder 4 days a week so we have got to try and keep it consistant together!! luckily she has got 5 kids and 3 are girls so she is fantastic!!!
i have been thinking about trying to start my lil man,he turns 2 end of feb but i think it will prob be too early so im not worrying over it,i will start when hes two i think..
