Hi all
I have been a member for a little while but never posted anything until now. I thought it was time to start posting:p
Looking forward to getting to know you all better:thumbsup:
I love TV I could class myself as a TV addict and over the years I have watched most soaps that are around. Love all the UK soaps except for Eastenders - can't stand the storylines- sorry-.
I would like it if they brought back Howards Way, Dallas and Knots Landing as I got into these shows when they were on UK Gold.........
Welcome Ladypink :D I'm sure you'll love it here, we're all very friendly and don't bite.
The number of programs I watch has gone down, I just don't have time anymore. I watch House, Home and Away and Casualty religiously. Sometimes catch The Bill.
Hope you post loads, it's always good to have fresh faces around here.
Abigail :)

Thanks so much for the welcome. I have been a member for too long now and have never really posted as I used to just use the site to check what was happening in the soaps I like to watch. Then as the weather has been so bad today I thought I would post =]

Welcome ladypink. I too would love to see Howards Way again :D
Happy posting :)
Thanks the welcome :)
Howards way is one of those shows that when it first came out - I was too young to really appreciate it. Then a few years ago I got into the show in a HUGE way when it was repeated on UK Gold. I was hooked. I have even bought a few episodes of the show on Ebay. The show was good, it had it all - maybe UK Gold will change their early morning line-up again and show it again..........
What's Howards Way about? I've never heard of it.

What's Howards Way about? I've never heard of it.
Howards Way was a BBC drama that started back in 1985 and was on the air for a number of years before coming to an end. The show documented the yatching life of people in a local community called Tarrant.
Some people think it could of been shown with an idea in mind for it to be the British version of Dynasty or Dallas. As it tried to have the glamour of these 2 shows.
The show at first was focused around a family called the Howards then it expanded to other characters in this English drama like: Ken Masters, Charles Frere and Jack Rolfe.
Welcome welcome welcome :)

College for me finished some time ago just I have signed up on an Open university course this year to start my degree as I wanted to work and study - not easy but keeping myself focused seems to be the key to keeping me interested :)

So far so good first bit seems focused on social science and the essay that I will be doing in connected to evolution.
Not bad so far just finding the time in the day when not working to pick a book up doesn't happen every night :(
Have you decided on the uni you want to go to?

Stirling Uni's one of the better uni's for History here. But Edinburgh Uni is closer to me so either of them preferably.

well it was my best subject at school along with maths (and all the maths open days were really boring and i couldnt see myself only doing maths for 3yrs!). and id been at my local dance and theatre school for about 12yrs since i was about 3 til it closed down so ive always liked doing it. and as i didnt know what i wanted to do i thought id choose something that i enjoyed and that i was good at. well i dance and act, my singings not bad but im not really that good so i dont really sing that much

thanks :) yeh thats why ive sort of moved away from the performance side cos its so competitive. according to one of my lecturers the average actor only earns about £1000 a year from acting work
Hannelene
11-06-2009, 10:37
That much. In some ways that isn't too bad as most average paid jobs pay around that wage. But I suppose with anything if you start from the bottom you have to start off at a low wage before you hit the big time!

£1000 is hardly anything. even on minimum wage you can earn about £8000 a year! i think even rent alone would come to more than £1000, especially in london which is where most of the work is. unless youre a well paid actor you need another job as well to live on
Hannelene
11-06-2009, 10:48
£1000 starting out in any industry is not bad - to go into something expecting more and you haven't got the skills yet is a bit dreamy.
With something like that it could mean living at home for a bit longer and saving or risk getting into serious debt.

how can £1000 not be bad when you can earn 8 times that on minimum wage? the reason its so low is cos most of the time you will be out of work. unless you were completely relying on your parents for rent/bills/food/transport. tbh i dont think you could find anyone who would be happy earning that a year and could honestly say they could live off it

thats what im saying, you would need a second job, which wouldnt be easy if you had to keep taking time off for auditions/acting work. if it was a normal job earning that for even only working 2 days a week you would be being severely underpaid for that doesnt even work out half of the minimum wage for 2 days a week work on minimum wage (which you would get at least £2500 for). £1000 might seem a lot but when you compare it to minimum wage which is what everyone should be getting if they are working, you see that actually it is a lot lot less in comparison. and thats what most actors would be earning their whole life each year from acting as its only around 1% that get a big break. so yeh actings not really worth it lol!

11-06-2009, 11:18
I was never aware that the acting world would be so under paid as I mentioned earlier in the post I have never known anyone that has got into this industry whether it be from the top or the bottom. I just assumed like with any job if you start out then you had to expect that the money wouldn't be much. But if this is how it was going to be for numerous years before I hit the big time if it was me then I would possibly have to choose a different career. As you have to survive and it would be hard to do so by what you said.

yeh if it was just a few years it would be alright but most people will never hit the big time as there are just so many people who want to do it. really if youre lucky then youll be ok otherwise i dont understand why people carry on trying after 10+yrs. maybe theyre just hoping, i dunno, but to me it doesnt seem worth it. ill just do another aspect of drama/theatre/tv that isnt as competitive to get work for!

If it was me and I was in that industry I would probably try solid for about 5 yrs hoping to either be on tv or some kind of mainstream work. If that led nowhere I would be happy to act and be on a stage somewhere. As long as I was performing it wouldn't matter.
90% of actors are unemployed in the industry. Always helps to have something to fall back on.

thats why the average earning is only £1000 a year cos most of the time you dont have any work, and why i dont wanna peform anymore!

Risky business :(
Why do people head into it? Is it to try and be a big star or because they have a passion for acting?
Probably a bit of both. You obviously have to have the passion and I expect that all performers hope to be talent spotted one day and then get a lucrative contract. But passion must surely be top of the list. :)

I think actors do it for the love of the profession, cause for the majority, it certainly aint for the money!!!

yeh i think it is a bit of both, though as my lecturer said anyone whos says they only do it for the passion is lying as if that was the case you wouldnt mind doing amateur stuff etc. i think its also the fact that if youve been trying for so long you dont wanna stop cos you might have just missed out on your opportunity
