And his mates don't help, slating him mercilessly about his fears.

Bosses of the ITV1 soap plan to leave the storyline on a knife edge - literally.

The summer episode will end with a close-up of Ashley's panicked face in the clinic as his surgeon picks up a scalpel.

Viewers will have to wait to see if he goes ahead or not.

BUTCHER Ashley Peacock is missing out on Corrie's summer of love - after he lies about having a vasectomy and gets a sex ban from furious wife Claire.

Pregnant Claire ends up in hospital this week after a devastating miscarriage.

She is determined never to get pregnant again after her heartache plus the memory of post-natal depression with first son Freddie.

Claire begs Ashley (Steven Arnold) to get the snip - but he is too scared to go through with it and ends up lying to her.

After discovering his tubes are still intact, furious Claire (Julia Haworth) rants: "No vasectomy, no sex.

"You will never lay a finger on my body again until you can prove that you are no longer capable of getting me pregnant.

"So until I actually see them snip your bits and pieces with my own eyes, you will be sleeping in the spare room."

Claire even accuses him of shirking the op to keep his options open.

She says: "You lied to me and, as I will never want kids again, the only conclusion I come to is you think one day you will want kids with another woman."

The row will put a strain on their already volatile marriage as both Ashley and Claire refuse to back down - leaving viewers wondering if he will look elsewhere for attention. An insider said: "Claire is determined that she will never get pregnant again.

"Because of her experiences she is terrified at the prospect.

"Ashley is left with the dilemma of never making love for the rest of his married life or have the op.

"If he chooses option one then viewers will be waiting for the moment that his frustrations get the better of him and he looks outside his marriage for nookie."

It comes as other couples on the Street are enjoying the ITV1 soap's most romantic season ever.

Love is in the air for Becky Granger (Katherine Kelly) and Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), who finally get hitched,

Smitten Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas) and Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan) are enjoying a blossoming romance.

And mechanic Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) continues his saucy affair with Molly Dobbs (Vicky Binns) behind the back of her hubby Tyrone (Alan Halsall).
