BBC Films has confirmed that plans are afoot to bring Doctor Who to the big screen.

In a BBC News article about current Time Lord David Tennant's appearance in spinoff series The Sarah Jane Adventures, a spokeswoman for the corporation's film division disclosed that "a script is in development" for a Who feature.

It is not yet known if executive producer Russell T. Davies or incoming showrunner Steven Moffat are writing the script, or whether Tennant or his replacement Matt Smith will play The Doctor. Tennant will appear in special 'The Waters Of Mars' this November, and two subsequent one-offs, before handing the role to Smith.

The Doctor has previously appeared in the 1965 film Doctor Who And The Daleks and 1966's Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 AD, with Peter Cushing playing the Time Lord on both occasions.

David Tennant is in talks to take his Time Lord character to the big screen in a film adaptation of iconic British TV series Doctor Who.

The actor announced in October he would be stepping down from the role after three years as the time traveller, passing the baton to newcomer Matt Smith.

But Tennant is reportedly hoping to maintain his ties to the cult sci-fi series for a little longer, by starring in a movie version of the longrunning hit.

And the star is said to be considering starring in subsequent sequels if the big screen project proves successful.

A source tells Britain's Daily Express, "The script is still in the early stages but David wants to be in the film. There have already been discussions and David needs to feel the story is right but right now things are looking very positive.

"He understandably wants to go off and do different roles but he still loves Doctor Who. If the film takes off and there's demand for more, he can continue to play the Doctor occasionally without having the pressure of the relentless schedule that the TV series demands."

I deffo think it should be David - However how will that work - scripting and then filming and editing the movie will take 2 years + (i persume) and Matt Smith is going be become the doctor at the end of this year?!

Has to be Mr Tennant in the film, Dr Who fans wouldn't go to see the new guy on the big screen if they haven't seen him in the tv series.

It must be David as the Human Doctor if it's him. It could be of things that are supposed to fit in between some of his episodes as a sort of flashback I guess, but I would think the first one would be better.
