After an extremely successful three years with the show, it came as a shock to many when former Hollyoaks producer Bryan Kirkwood last year announced his decision to step down and pass the baton to the "safe hands" of his deputy, 30-year-old Lucy Allan. Having taken the helm at the beginning of the year, Lucy's own material will finally filter onto screen from June 1. As part of DS's Producer Season 2009, we chat to Lucy about her visions for the show, delving into the history books and potential new faces.

You took over from Bryan Kirkwood at the beginning of the year. What were your visions for the show when you took the reins?
"I know I've said it on numerous occasions, but I think it was a show that was in brilliant shape when I inherited it, so therefore you don't want to make big, key changes to something that works. However, I think there are things coming up over the course of the summer and into the rest of the year that show certain changes in terms of style and the way we perhaps tell stories."

Bryan blew up The Dog when he took office at the head of the show. How are you going to put your 'stamp' on it?
"In terms of Bryan coming in and doing the Dog fire in the way he did, that was a necessary stamp at that point in time when the show needed that kind of help, whereas the show's in fairly rude health at the moment, so there's no need to have some enormous cull or have a big stunt to say 'here we are'."

It's been quite quiet in the village over the last few months. What can we expect in the second half of the year?
"We've got loads going on in the second half of the year. Obviously we've got all of the stuff with The Loft fire, building up to the exit of three major characters from the show in big, exciting storylines. Then we move into a summer of love, teenagers, trouble and mayhem and re-establishing a lot of characters within the show, before building to a massive September."

You've just come out of long-term story conference. What are you really excited about in the coming months?
"It's difficult because there are loads of storylines and loads of stuff in conference that I'm really proud of and really excited about. If there's one particular group for which we've got a long-term story which I think will be thrilling and really unexpected - and something which only Hollyoaks could do. It's with our teenage kids."

Roxanne McKee, Jamie Lomas, Stuart Manning and potentially Emma Rigby have all left/are all leaving. How are you going to deal with the huge dent in the greenroom?
"I don't think we have a huge dent in the greenroom. Yes, we have lost some characters, but it's a natural turnover of soap that people stay and leave. But with the youth-oriented show that we are, characters outgrow their usage. We have characters that we've been waiting to grow up and who have grown up in the show, and we're pushing some of them to the forefront. But also there are going to be a few new faces, particularly in the university halls."

New character called Stav?
"I can't really talk about that one, but there are various characters that come and go during the course of the year."

All soaps seem to have locked onto delving into the history books and bringing back well-known faces. What are you thoughts on bringing back past characters?
"I think it depends, doesn't it? We all know that sometimes old characters come back to plug a story hole or a quiet couple of months, in which case it's perhaps not the best thing in the world. However, I think if there's a big story that involves characters that are already in the show, then absolutely , let's not say 'no'."

Is it something you're actively exploring?
"Not actively looking back on the history of the show, because, as I say, I don't think we've got story holes that we need to plug as it currently stands... If you bring people back, it's got to drive stories on not go backwards."

How proud are you of Stunt Week?
"I can't wait. I'm extraordinarily proud - they're fantastic. They were a real challenge in terms of production, storytelling and compliance and I think everybody has really pulled together... They're certainly going to be ones to watch. There's a lot within all the episodes during the week that people will found surprising. I hope viewers will feel a sense of satisfaction when they watch them."

There's now a heavy focus on the youngsters of Hollyoaks and the older, more established characters seem to have taken a back seat...
"Obviously it's a show that's centred around the younger characters and always has been. I think it's about having a level playing field in terms of story and I think perhaps there were an awful lot of stories that featured older characters last year. It's now about levelling it out to ensure that mix of stories is always there so we're serving all areas of the audience."

But characters like Myra don't seem to be getting the storylines...
"Again, I think it's about who's central to the show. Myra plays a very important role as the mother in the McQueen household. It'd be abnormal - and certainly not something we've done previously - to run a story that came from the point of view of one of those more adult characters. However, that said, Myra has an awful lot to do over the next year, so you certainly aren't going to miss her on screen."

Will you be having any input into the new run of Hollyoaks Later?
"All I know is that it'll be in a similar format to last year where it will follow the 6.30pm show and will have those links back through to the main show."

[B]Plot teasers from new 'Oaks producer

New Hollyoaks series producer Lucy Allan is the fourth person to take the hot seat for DS's Producer Season 2009. The main serving of the interview can be found here, while several character teases and intriguingly cryptic plot hints appear below!

Ste, Abi and Daniel
"This is a big story for us over the course of the summer and Ste is a character that we've invested massively in. It's about Ste discovering that two people you trust are very different to what he thought they were... There's certainly going to be an unexpected end to it all that sees Ste re-evaluating everything he previously thought."

Sarah and Lydia - is it not a little McDean-esque? A lot of people are saying that it's almost a carbon copy of a the John Paul/Craig storyline? It's quite hypocritical of Sarah?
"Didn't Sarah criticise Craig because she was in a relationship with him [while she was with John Paul]? It was less about his sexuality and more about the fact that he was cheating on her. Whereas with Sarah and Lydia, neither of them is in a relationship and also Craig, bless him, the one thing that he could never say was 'I'm gay' and Sarah very early on has got over all that. It seems to me that it is a very different story and certainly the way it builds and finally plays out, it couldn't be any further away from John Paul and Craig if it tried."

The McQueens
"There's loads of stuff going on in the McQueen house. The one thing I thought after last year was that they had such a hard time with Niall, so we need to re-establish our favourite family of fun and remind ourselves who they all are."

Zak
"We've got Zak's brother Caleb - played by Michael Ryan - who turns up just in time to see Zak get an unexpected result to his degree. He's quite an unexpected brother and putting Hayley, Zak and Caleb together makes for some very interesting conversation."

Theresa
"Theresa has tons coming up. What viewers might be interested to know is that Theresa's going to fall in love. I don't think she expects it in the slightest… "

The Roys
"Anita has been a fantastic character through this racism storyline. She's compelling to watch and certainly someone to keep an eye on. In terms of the family, we've got a lot of sibling rivalry building up and Ravi's going to end up facing a big, life-threatening decision later on in the year that's going to throw a bit of a bomb in that household."

Malachy/Kris
"The brothers have some material coming up, but it's more about their own individual stories. You have to say 'what do you do with a tranny when he leaves university?' so there's some fun with Kris getting a job and there's a big identity story for him. With Malachy, I think it would be an error if his illness was the main focus of his character. He's a character that's full of energy and comedy and a lot of what we love about him is his outlook on life and boisterousness. Malachy's going to find his feet again in The Loft over the summer."

The Osbornes
"We're going to see the Osbornes face a lot more disappointment with Darren."

Calvin
"Calvin's got big stuff coming up, but most of his story [after Stunt week] is about him facing the consequences of who he became and trying to find his place in the village."

Cheryl - big plans?
"Absolutely. You can't have anything but big with Cheryl, can you? She arrives in the middle of the biggest funeral of the year and causes absolute mayhem and continues to do so..."

Will Spencer be sticking around in life after Warren?
"He'll be sticking around, yes."

And also on the cards...
§ Festival madness results in two of the most unlikely characters getting hitched this summer...
§ After an unexpected psychotic episode, one of our most-loved characters finds themselves on trial for murder
§ A new student brings hedonism to Hollyoaks
§ McQueen mayhem spreads to Evissa
§ The graduates leave HCC and discover that the real world is full of David Brent-a-likes
§ The teens embark on a camping trip that will change their lives forever
§ An old family secret comes out leaving one of our teens looking for the truth
§ Money makes the world go round and when a group of lads find £100k, madness soon ensues

Is it just me or is Hollyoaks losing its touch as of late. The preview for the rest of the year looks so boring.

Hollyoaks has been boring since about Xmas, the only storyline that seemed to have a bit of momentum was Justin and Hannah, but that was poorly written getting them two together because it was so rushed and totally came out of nowhere.

Next week is stunt week which will be great to watch, just saw the advert on Ch4 and it looked amazing.

The show is so pale in comparison to how it was a few years back. I miss the days of The Burtons, Mel/Sophie, Clare/Max, Mandy, Becca etc

All these new characters are just crap. it seems to have gone back into its teenage phase these past few months, theres no drama anymore.

Im hoping next week will live up to the hype though

It will be good for the next week and a half, I guarantee it will go back to the boring storylines after the loft explotion Justins/Warrens/Clares/Russ's exits.

I do miss some of the older storylines, before the teenage stuff, it used to be based on student life not high school life, thats when it lost some of the viewers who grew to like the show.

I haven't watched Ho for about a year and a half the last time being Hannah's eating disorder story, but to me it has lost it's appeal it has in the early days of Tony, Carol, Finn and others. The cast members now just don't have what Max and OB had and that is what lacking. The only cast member I like now is Steph.

But Steph doesn't even get a storyline anymore.

I agree that Hollyoaks is far from the original days, aswell as Hannahs storyline that was soap history in the making, well should have won best storyline that year, not Max and Staceys affair.

I got into it when Mandy was in Uni, I think it was 2000 I truly understood soaps.

Alls I know from reading the Inside Soap is that Hannah and Darren and a few others go camping, but I also heard from another forum that they are supposed to get together.:hmm:

I think Hannah should get with Gilly in my opinion he is better than Darren, who is a sleaze:lol:
