Does anyone know what sort of Insurance group I should be aiming at for a learner/newely qualified driver?

As low as possible - i'd have thought max group 7, but then again you need to phone around as you might get cheaper insurance on a higher group.

Try confused.com for a quote.

Yes, its very good. But always get a quote - insurance quotation isn't just tied down to the insurance group. E.g. a car in insurance group 8 could be cheaper to insure than one in group 5

They should be cheap to insure. Run a few quotes off confused.com, elephant.co.uk, and aquote.co.uk and see which is the cheapest.

There's normally discounts for female drivers, govt employees etc

If you know anyone that knows about cars, you might want to check out an auction. The last three cars I've had have all been from an auction and have saved me on average about £1500/car

Thanks for the tips, I might be able to get a deal at my local dealer. There is one at the moment which would save me £2000 I just wasn't sure whether to get a brand new car for me to practise in. Then again once I've passed I'm not planning on getting rid of it for a good 3 years so why not! - Just have to get there before the colour I want runs out! lol
