THREE more stars are being booted off Coronation Street as the soap tries to cut costs in the credit crunch.

Miseryguts Paula Carp, barmaid Poppy Morales and Norris Cole’s meek missus Mary Taylor leave our screens in weeks.

Bosses say the characters — who have only been on the series for around six months — have failed to make their mark on the ITV1 show.

A source said: “It’s a real shame they’re leaving but their characters haven’t made a huge impact and we haven’t got any more big storylines for them. We just can’t afford to keep them on.

“We can’t be sentimental and we felt their characters had run their course.

From The Sun

I can see Paula Carp's storyline coming to an end, Poppy has only just started to develop and I shall miss Mary, I think she is great with Norris. :(

That's they way in life last ones in the door are usually the first ones to get the boot. There would be less of an uproar about axing cast members who haven't been there that long than if they axed long-term characters.

I would hardly call them 'stars'. They had minor parts thats all. I would have liked to have seen the character of Mary staying to play alongside Norris as I think it could have been good.

Coronation Street executives have denied reports that characters have been axed from the show in order to cut back on costs.

A tabloid newspaper today claimed that Sharon Duce, Sophiya Haque and Pattie Clare - who play Weatherfield's Paula Carp, Poppy Morales and Mary Taylor - had been given the boot from the show due to financial reasons.

However, Corrie producers this afternoon insisted that the departing characters were only ever intended to remain with the show for the duration of their ongoing storylines, which all happen to come to an end within the next few weeks.

A show spokesperson said: "The affected actors were all involved in storylines that were due to run for a finite time. If every new character stayed in the show, the Street would be a little crowded to say the least."

Paula's storyline reaches its climax on May 22, while Poppy and Mary leave on May 8 and May 15 respectively.

Other actors departing at the end of their current storyline arc include Colin Grimshaw (Edward de Souza) and Ramsay Clegg (Andrew Sachs).

i can understand why Mary and Paula are going, they are obviosuly only short term, one storyline characters. but Poppy? she's good when they give her stuff to do and I'm wondering why they even bothered to introduce her in the first place? she's not done anything major or had any significant relationshps with anyone. odd. what a waste.

that's a shame about poppy i really like her character even though she's not done much. if they'd have given her a proper storyline i'm sure it would have been good for the character

If they were planning to have Poppy on the show for a short term what was the point of her being made manager of the pub and given the storyline about sacking Betty. Are they going to re-employ Betty in the Rover's once Poppy has gone?
