Sun Hill kick start their morning dealing with a dramatic armed robbery at a toyshop, where the manager Lawrence Till (Martin Savage) is shot and badly wounded. After a tense chase, the robbers escape on a motorbike, much to the officer’s frustration.
Later at the hospital, Lawrence tells Trainee DC Will Fletcher (Gary Lucy) that the suspect’s got away with £70,000 but he claims not to have seen their faces. Back at the station, D.S. Max Carter (Christopher Fox) goes through the CCTV footage where he notices customer Jade Hopkins (Eloise Joseph) arguing with a toyshop employee and wonders if she was used as a diversion. PC Millie Brown (Clare Foster) questions Jade, who says she was simply trying to get a refund for a broken toy she bought her young son, Lewis. Millie tells Max she doesn’t think Jade has anything to do with the robbery, but he warns her not to be so naïve. As the investigation continues, Ronnie Lane (Mark Monero) becomes the main suspect in the robbery and Max is stunned to learn he’s Jade’s brother.
Max heads up a briefing and explains that all evidence points to Ronnie and infamous local gangster, Curtis Jenson (Ronan Vibert) being behind the robbery, using Jade as a decoy and arranges for the three houses to be raided. Jade is stunned when Millie and PC Roger Valentine (John Bowler) explain the reason for their visit and is furious when Roger asks if they can check Lewis’s cot. In anger, she lifts the mattress herself and is horrified to see a gun under it.
Back in custody, Jade is completely distraught when Max brings a social worker to take her baby away. Millie tells Max that she’s convinced Jade didn’t know anything about the gun or the robbery, but Max brushes her off. Elsewhere, Ronnie finally admits to the robbery and swears Jade had nothing to do with it. He confesses to needing the money, as he owed someone and they were threatening to hurt Jade and her son, but he refuses to name Curtis as the suspect.
As Jade is released, Millie asks Max if they can get her some protection from Curtis. The PC is left frustrated when Max tells her he still believes Jade is involved and therefore doesn’t need any protection. Concerned for Jade, Mille drives her home after her shift and warns her about Curtis. As Millie is about to leave her, two masked men burst in and drag the girls from the flat, with guns held to their heads, as baby Lewis is left behind, screaming.
