View Full Version : Swine Flu
Does anyone else think this has been blown out of porportion???
I live in the town of scotland where its been found, you cant get moving for press
SBBB - Next Clue - Let's be having you. Just once a week though.
I was thinking about you when I heard it was Airdrie.
No, I don't think it is blown out of proportion by the responsible media. It is an important, worldwide threat.
However, some of the tabloid press - the Express in particular are totally irresponsible in their reporting.
Some people get the wrong end of the stick and come out with the biggest load of horse manure imaginable. Have you have a look at the Talking POint on the BBC news website on the subject? It is shocking how ignorant and stupid some people are.
My hubby is in Texas at the moment (working with a Mexican crew on a job). I am concerned that he has to fly two planes home. He is always catching stuff on planes (he travels long haul at least twice a month).
At some point there will be a flu pandemic, whether or not this is it remains to be seen.
I think that the public is fed up being scared by AIDS, SARs, CJD, Bird Flu - and assume that every new scare is going to end in the same way. A big talking point on the news but nothing in real life.
Unfortunately we are not talking about a dead swan being washed up in a remote scottish village. We are talking about a new flu virus that has jumped the species barrier and can now be transmitted from human to human.
So far, out with Mexico, the virus seems mild, but in Mexico it isn't and we need to know why this is.
At least the bird flu scare has meant that most developed countries have stock piles of anti viral medication.
Well, 5 confirmed cases in UK, a school shut in Devon and the first confirmed death outside of Mexico - a 23 month old child from Texas.
This could be the tip of the iceberg.

A couple from the Gorgie area of Edinburgh, which is about 3 miles from were I live have been quarantined in their home. They have returned from honeymoon from Cancun the same time as the couple from Falkirk.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8024611.stm
The five people in the UK are responding well to treatment. All of them have recently returned from Mexico, where they aren't closing the borders. Mexico have to stop people going into and out of the country, it's the only way to prevent further spreading of it to other countries not affected yet.
We can't prevent it spreading in the countries it's already arrived in but we can stop people leaving Mexico and passing it on to other people. Stop international travel, it only takes one person to infect the other hundred or so passengers on a plane who then pass it on to others.
I'm not expert on swine flu but it's pretty obvious that controlling the source goes some way to controlling the spread.
Would it shock and surprise you to know that 30000 to 40000 deaths occur due to the flu each year in the United States? Mainly with old and young.
This doesn't shock me, obviously the flu is a killer, and that is why old and vulnerable people have annual vaccinations against it.
The flu virus mutates readily, and the worry of a new strain is that is transferable human to human is that there is no natural immunity in the population.
If this virus (which, it has to be said, seems at the moment to be more benign that normal seasonal flu) were to mutate into a more viralent strain then we would all be in trouble.
It hasn't happened yet, but it is still sensible to keep an eye on this as it develops. If it isn't this strain, then there will be another one at some time soon.
My mates become quite obsessed with this and keepsgiving us updates from what he's read on the Internet. It scares me how quick it can spread.

The UN's World Health Organization has raised the alert over the spread of swine flu to level five - one short of a full-blown pandemic. WHO's Dr Margaret Chan: 'All countries should immediately activate their pandemic preparedness plans'.
Quotes taken from very recent BBC article.. Man I am getting soooo worried now! :(
My form tutor said this afternoon if it they announce it as level five it will be level six in no time! I feel so lost?! :(

All you can do it be extra careful with hygiene. Washing hands etc. Apparently masks aren't that useful for protecting yourself though. The UK has plenty of stockpiles of antiviral drugs (and I expect other developed countries will do too) so when people get sick they have a good chance of survival.
Its the third world countries that will suffer. If the virus gets over there they may not be able to get afford the treatment, and places like Africa where there is a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS (wrecks the immune system) well, it could just wipe them out! :(
Dont worry about the Swine Flu anymore folks I have found the cure

Michael Jackson has reportedly abandoned plans to visit Britain over fears that he might catch swine flu.
According to the Daily Express, the 'Thriller' star had hoped to travel to the UK within the next few weeks in order to find a suitable home to live in during his residency at London's O2 arena.
"Michael wanted to come over for viewings... because he wants to make sure the property is just right - after all he will be renting it from now until February next year," The Daily Telegraph quotes a source as saying.
"But that is off for the time being. We are going to send him videos. Michael doesn't want to travel because of the worry surrounding the flu outbreak."
He usually wears a face mask anyway, he could wear a couple now
Singer Tulisa Contostavlos, from pop band N-Dubz, is being tested for swine flu after falling ill on board a flight to Greece, her manager has confirmed.
The 20-year-old from north London was taken to hospital in Athens.
Miss Contostavlos has undergone tests to determine if she has the virus, which has now been confirmed in 15 cases in the UK.
The band's manager Jonathan Shalit has told the Press Association her band mates are "all very worried about her".
He added that he had "no idea how she got ill" but "the nature of being a singer is that you meet and shake hands with a huge amount of people".
The three-piece, which includes Miss Contostavlos's 21-year old cousin Dino 'Dappy' Contostavlos and their childhood friend Richard Rawson, 22, have enjoyed huge success this year.
They currently occupy the top spot in the singles chart, featuring on Tinchy Stryder's hit, Number 1.
The band are also due to play Radio 1's Big Weekend in Swindon next weekend but the appearance could be in jeopardy if tests prove positive.

Sorry Im late with all my replies that child who died, I was watching Sky News when It was confirmed the child wasnt from Texas, but from Mexico, the child had travelled their for help with treatment
I think to some extent it has caused a large panic that needed
The population of Mexcio is something like 100 million, or that might be one of the cities where it is over populated
Now of course it horrible that people have it and died but if you compare it to the population of these countires and infact the world population that percentage is very tiny.
Also people forget that nowadays the heathcare system is better no matter how much people complain about it, out technology is better
Oh, and I believe one of the last pandemic was years ago, I read one was in 1918, where malnuaturiton was high, we had poor diets, no matter what people might say, ours is better these days,so we are healthier compared to last time, idicating why it is poor countires that will ssuffer the most

A pregnant woman who was admitted to hospital in Scotland after contracting swine flu has given birth prematurely.
The baby was born on Monday afternoon, at 29 weeks' gestation, in the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley. The child is stable in intensive care.
The 38-year-old mother, who is said to be critically ill, is one of several people in hospital with the virus.
The total number of swine flu cases in the UK reached 508 after another 49 cases were confirmed on Friday.
The other people in hospital with the virus include a 44-year-old woman from Renfrewshire who is in intensive care, a women aged 23, and two men aged 45 and 37.
The condition of the 37-year-old man has improved and he has been moved from intensive care to a high-dependency unit.
Of the new cases confirmed on Friday, 27 were in England and 22 in Scotland.
Of those in England, 14 were in London and five were in the South East.
Of the cases in Scotland, 16 were in the Highland health board area, five in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and one in Forth Valley.
The second case in Wales has been revealed to be a 66-year-old GP from Neath Port Talbot, who is recovering after contracting the illness on holiday in the US.
The virus is now in 66 countries, with the majority of cases - including 117 deaths - in Mexico and the US.
The World Health Organization warned it was "getting closer" to declaring a global outbreak.

UN health officials are expected to declare the first global flu pandemic in 40 years, after holding emergency talks on the swine flu crisis.
The World Health Organization called the meeting after a steep rise in the number of cases in Australia.
Hong Kong on Thursday announced it was closing all its nurseries and primary schools for two weeks after 12 students tested positive for the virus.
The last global flu pandemic came in 1968 over the Hong Kong flu.
That pandemic killed about one million people.
A disease is classed as a pandemic when transmission between humans becomes widespread in at least two regions of the world.
The latest virus emerged in Mexico in April and since then thousands of cases have been confirmed throughout North and South America.
The H1N1 strain has spread to 74 countries but the WHO has so far resisted labelling the outbreak a full-blown pandemic.
WHO chief Margaret Chan talked to officials from eight countries with large flu outbreaks on Wednesday in an attempt to confirm the spread of the disease.
She said she believed the situation could be regarded as a pandemic but wanted clear evidence before making an announcement.
The WHO's move follows Australia's confirmation of more than 1,200 cases - a four-fold increase in a week.
All primary schools and nurseries in Hong Kong are to shut for 14 days from Friday in a bid to contain the virus, the territory's chief executive Donald Tsang said.
It follows confirmation that 12 secondary school pupils have contracted the illness. Secondary schools are not yet being ordered to close.
At least 50 people are now confirmed to have the virus in the territory.
The head of the WHO's global influenza programme, Keiji Fukuda, said the situation had "evolved a lot" in recent days.
"We are getting close to knowing that we are in a pandemic situation," he said.
Although most sufferers experience normal flu symptoms and make a full recovery, the WHO has confirmed 141 deaths from 27,737 cases.
The BBC's health correspondent, Jane Dreaper, says classifying the virus as a pandemic does not mean that the virus has suddenly become more deadly.
But it does send a clear signal to health officials and businesses to continue planning for the possibility of large numbers of people catching the virus, she says.
The move may speed up the production of vaccines and prompt national governments to impose measures such as travel bans.
The WHO's emergency committee in Geneva began at 1000 GMT.

I thought that this had all died down since there were no reports about it....
The health organisations are warning that it will become really bad in the coming autumn/winter period and they are urging for vaccines to be stock piled.

I am worried :(
We did have a scare here in Milton Keynes when it first came out and another person was suffering from it in Northampton. But I really believed because it was not in the mainstream news that everything was fine- I guess not :(
Often in a pandemic there are several 'waves.' The first one is widespread and affects lots of people. During this time there's time for a vaccine to be produced.
Then it dies down for several months, few cases reported and vaccines are stockpiled. After that comes a second wave, which is worse than the first and often in the winter.
It's already been seen in Australia, the number of cases has increased four fold in the last week because it's their winter flu season.

There's 800 reported cases in the UK. Most people are able to fight it off, there's only a handful that are seriously ill in hospital and no deaths as of yet.
I'm not worried at the moment. My concern is for the second wave in ~6 months time. There should be a vaccine by then. How many shots available is another matter. At this stage I would hope GSK & Pfizer won't be too concerned with profits and competition and work together to produce it.

Three people attending the Glastonbury Festival have been diagnosed with suspected swine flu. Two students and a 10-year-old child from a family of four showed symptoms of the illness when examined by festival medical staff.
The students, from Exeter and Edinburgh universities, and the family were moved off the festival site and into an isolation facility.
After receiving advice they have now all decided to return home.
Dr Mark Salter, one of the 600-strong medical team at the festival, said: "This is generally a mild illness but we are taking no chances and strongly advising people with symptoms to leave the festival.
"Because of the number of people it is highly likely that we will see other cases, but we are fully prepared."

on the link my uni sent us it says:
The symptoms of this swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal flu and include fever, fatigue, lack of appetite, coughing, sore throat, pain in muscles and joints, headache and chills. Some people with swine flu have also reported vomiting and diarrhoea.
If you have recently visited one of the countries or areas where human cases of swine flu have been identified, or been in close contact with someone who has confirmed or suspected swine flu, it is important for you to monitor your health closely for seven days after your visit or contact.
There is no need for you to isolate yourself from other people as long as you remain well.
If you develop flu-like symptoms, you should stay at home and phone your family doctor or NHS Direct (0845 4647). If a health professional decides that you need to have tests, you should avoid contact with other people as much as possible until you receive the results.

When the swine flu virus first arrived in Scotland one of the lecturers in the office was tested for it as he had flu like symtoms but it turned out to be a viral infection.
An elderly man who was suffering from swine flu has died, health officials have confirmed. The 73-year old was being treated at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley at the time. He died late on Saturday.
A spokesman for the Scottish Government said he was suffering from underlying health complications.
The pensioner, from Inverclyde, passed away late on Saturday night. He is the second person in the UK who was suffering from swine flu to die.
The first death, earlier this month, was a 38-year-old woman who gave birth prematurely while being treated at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. She also had underlying health conditions.
Her death was the first connected to swine flu outside the Americas.
The pensioner who died had been in intensive care for 15 days.
Scottish Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the patient at this tragic and very sad time. The family have asked for the patient's identity to be kept private.
Although it is concerning that the patient had swine flu, we are aware that the patient had very serious underlying health issues.
"It's important to remember that the vast majority of those who have H1N1 are suffering from relatively mild symptoms.
A family spokesperson said: "Our beloved relative was private in life and we would ask that his privacy continues to be respected as we try to come to terms with our loss."
Dr Harry Burns, Scotland's chief medical officer, said the death was a "tragedy" but also underlined that it was only the second death from swine flu in well over 4,000 cases in the UK.
Flu pandemic
He told the BBC: "It's a tragedy, but it doesn't change our view that this is no more serious than winter flu.
"In fact this is the second case in about four and a half thousand cases that we've seen in the UK and that makes it a lot less severe, much less aggressive than we would normally see with a winter flu virus.
"What happens with winter flu is there is no publicity," he added.
According to the latest available figures, there were more than 4,200 laboratory confirmed cases in the UK.
Of these, 3,364 cases are in England, 922 in Scotland and 24 in Northern Ireland.
Four new cases were confirmed in Wales on Sunday bringing the total to 17.
60,000 cases
It also emerged on Saturday that three people attending the Glastonbury Festival have been diagnosed with suspected swine flu.
Two students and a 10-year-old child from a family of four showed symptoms of the illness when examined by festival medical staff.
The students, from Exeter and Edinburgh universities, and the family were moved off the festival site and into an isolation facility.
They have since returned home.
The H1N1 virus first emerged in April in Mexico, which has recorded 116 deaths and 8,279 cases, according to the World Health Organisation.
On 11 June, the WHO declared a global flu pandemic, meaning that swine flu virus was spreading in at least two regions of the world.
Officials stressed that this did not mean the virus was causing more severe illness or more deaths.
According to the latest figures from the WHO, there have been 263 deaths and nearly 60,000 cases in some 100 countries and territories

Big Brother 7 star Imogen Thomas has caught swine flu after returning from holiday.
The 2006 contestant, 26, was diagnosed with the virus after coming home from Marbella on Monday, reports the South Wales Post.
"It's awful," said the glamour model. "I feel drowsy and need to sleep. Swine flu isn't exactly a good souvenir to bring back from holiday."
She is now reportedly in quarantine in her London flat and has been prescribed antiviral medication Tamiflu by doctors.
Thomas, who has become a regular fixture in lads' magazines since leaving Big Brother, was famously involved in a sex tape scandal (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/bigbrother/a56167/imogen-calls-lawyers-in-over-sex-tape.html) during her time on the show.

Vaccines will be given to those in high risk groups, as per usual flu vaccines. People with asthma, heart or lung problems, diabetes, weakened immune system and the elderly are in the high risk group. However, its thought the elderly will already be immune to the disease because it was around donkeys ago.

thats what i thought to start with too. but my mum said she heard on the news that 18 - 25yr olds were mostly likely to get it and 40 - 50yr olds (or some age around that) were most likely to die from it and the elderly were unlikely to get it, so i wasnt sure how they were gonna vaccinate people. though seeing as all the people who have died in britain so far have had other health problems im guessing it would go to those people first
The vaccine has to go through clinical trials before its released to the general public. I'm not sure how they're going to do it. Vaccinate a person then quarantine them with people who already have the virus to see if it works?

im not sure how theyre gonna do it either. im guessing the same way as they trial other drugs? i always thought these sort of trials were to make sure there were no major side effects and the like rather than to make sure it actually works
In clinical trials there is always a phase where the drug is tested on patients to see if it works as it should.

HARRY Potter actor Rupert Grint has been struck down with swine flu.
Grint, who plays Harry's pal Ron Weasley, was forced to take a break from filming the latest instalment about the young wizard when he was hit by the bug.
His publicist said today: "It has just been confirmed that Rupert Grint has taken a few days out of filming due to a mild bout of swine flu."
"He has now recovered and is looking forward to joining his fellow cast members at the junket and premieres this week and will then return to filming directly afterwards."
She said Grint's doctor had confirmed that Rupert had recovered and was no longer contagious or at risk of infecting others.
"Other scenes were shot in his absence which did not require his involvement and thus filming was not disrupted," she added.

Rupert Grint is recovering after contracting swine flu on the set of the latest Harry Potter movie.
The British actor, who plays Ron Weasley in the wizard franchise, was forced to take time off from filming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which is currently shooting in Britain, after he was diagnosed with the deadly virus.
Grint, 20, has now recovered and is ready to get back to work promoting the sixth movie in the franchise, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
His publicist says, "He has now recovered and is looking forward to joining his fellow cast members at the premieres this week and then return to filming directly afterwards. JUST found out that a boy in my sister's class has got it :|
14 people have now died from it and the UK have the third highest number of cases behind Mexico and the USA.
All the people that have died so far have had underlying health conditions.
There was something on the news earlier about the first one without underlying health problems dying.

People without underlying health problems die of "normal" flu every year (36,000 in the US and 5,000 in the UK roughly)

It is getting rather ridiculous now. This swine flu won't stop me living my life how I wish too.
It is getting rather ridiculas as i keep saying it is a flu. Like jojo says lots of people die from flu every year.
Micah Richards the City defender caught it on Holiday so is confined in Cyprus and cant go back for pre season training. I found that quite amusing as he is getting more scared about the stick he will receive when it gets back to the team than the actual flu.

That's just going too far. The windows are so small anyway that they wouldn't exactly make much difference and if she was going to catch it on the bus she'd be more likely to have got it by leaning over everyone.

The post-mortem of a GP who died after contracting swine flu has revealed that he died of natural causes.
Dr Michael Day, 64, who was a GP from Dunstable, died on Saturday after contracting the H1N1 virus.
Bedfordshire Police said that as a result there would not be an inquest into his death, as it was not caused by swine flu.
A post-mortem is still due for Chloe Buckley, six, from north west London who died after contracting swine flu.
Dr Day, who worked at the Priory Gardens health centre in Dunstable, died on Saturday in Luton and Dunstable Hospital.
Chloe, who died on Thursday at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, central London, had contracted the virus in the UK.
She attended St Catherine's School in West Drayton, north west London.
The school has closed early for the summer break following her death.
Her parents, Michael and Jacinta, released a statement saying they were satisfied with the medical care Chloe had received and asked to be left alone to grieve.
"We are obviously very distressed at the loss of our fun-loving baby girl.
"Nothing can replace her in our lives and we would plead with you to allow us to deal with our loss in private and without further intrusion.
"We are satisfied that the medical care Chloe received at all times was appropriate, and are disappointed with the stories that have been printed that suggest otherwise."

AS IF people struggling with obesity did not have enough to worry about, they now face a new health hazard. According to statistics from the US, overweight people appear more likely to die of swine flu.
Most of the people who have died from H1N1 swine flu have had an underlying health problem that weakened their ability to fight off the virus. Among the conditions recognised as increasing the risk from flu are hypertension, diabetes, chronic lung obstruction and coronary disease. Now it may be time to add obesity to the list.

I reckon you need to get tested to find out for sure :searchme:
Yeah thats what iim confused about
Doctors aren't testing for Swine flu now, it's just a telephone diagnosis. There simply isn't the man power, labs or funds to test everyone who thinks they have it.
You can see the list of people affected here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8155464.stm
Patients who have had drug treatment for asthma
I'm ****ed.
What does heart disease cover? Is it any heart problem?
So on the phone they could tell you, you have it but you might not actaully have it
They'll ask you your symptoms, take a history, ask if you've been in contact with other confirmed cases or live in a high risk area then decide if you've just got a cold or swine flu.
It's like the lottery. You're better off tossing a coin
If there is no medicine for the 'ordinary' flu, other than paracetamol and/or lemsip etc, why is tamiflu supposed to help with swine flu?
Tamiflu and Relenza are antvirals so in theory they could treat normal winter flu. However, like all antibiotics, overuse reduces efficiency and increases resistance so they aren't commonly used except in extreme cases.
Not everybody has been getting Tamiflu. Relenza is only going to be used when the virus mutates and becomes resistant to Tamiflu.

UK girlband The Sugababes have been struck down with the deadly swine flu.
Bandmembers Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah have been put into quarantine after they developed symptoms of the virus.
Keisha, 24, admitted: "I definitely don't have swine flu, but the other girls are ill with it.
"We've had to cancel all our events for the next week or so while the girls get better.
"I can't believe I know someone who has swine flu. I'm sure we'll laugh when it's over."
The girls were due to meet with US music mogul Jay-Z this week to talk over promoting their new single Get Sexy in the States.
But they have been ordered to cancel all promotional duties on their new track for at least two weeks - including their slot at the Reading and Leeds Festivals at the weekend.
The girls signed for Jay-Z's new Roc-a-fella record label back in April, and it was the first time he had had chance to come over to the UK to meet with them.
A source said: "This is a massive blow to the girls.
"They were all geared up after their break to throw themselves into promoting the new material.
"But then Heidi fell ill and so did Amelle.
"They thought it was only a cold at first but they were so sick they couldn't even get off the couch, no matter how much they wanted to get back into work.
"The girls have been told by the doctor that they have all the symptoms of swine flu and they have been told to stay in, rest and stay away from people.
"Which means there is no way they will be able to meet up with Jay-Z while he is in town - it's too risky."
The swine flu virus, has so far infected over 125,000 people worldwide.

tbh this whole "deadly virus outbreak" theyre making it out to be really is just stupid. it's not as bad they're making it out to be.
The media are partly to blame for everybody thinking we're all going to die. They have the public running scared with the bird flu saga, which killed a few birds in Scotland and didn't cross into humans.
It's flu, just a different strain that we haven't come across before.

I have said this before that 30000 to 40000 deaths occur due to the flu each year in the United States. As you rightly pointed out Abigail, it is a new strain we haven't come across before but still I think 40000 death from normal flu is really high

Aw Bryan hope you get better soon. get plenty of rest fluids and homemade soup we will look after you even if the crappy NHS can't.
I was discussing the amount of cases with my sister and she was disturb on the amount of people not getting the drugs or vacination against swine flu. I wasn't as the figures are not different to dying from normal flu. maybe this is just my opinion but I think that they are holding off given Tamiflu and the vacination as it is away to reduce the world population. those who have died from it have all had underline problems, people who are dependant on longterm care. If a number of the elderlay and those with health problems preventing them from working die then the revenue that pays towards providing care is reduced.
I do see your point Kath and I don't think anyone will ever come out and say "we're holding back on Tamiflu in the hope people will die and ease the burden on healthcare, benefits, pensions, food supplies etc." Putting it like that makes it sound like a conspiracy theory :p
The UK has the world's largest stockpile of Tamiflu and Relenza, enough for 80% of the population. The virus can mutate though so when the second wave comes later in the year it is likely to be different and nobody will have any immunity to it. If we use all the antivirals up now there won't be any when things get much worse. The vaccine will only protect against the current strain.
Therefore, Tamiflu is likely to be rationed and those with very minor symptoms and no underlying medical conditions might not get it.

24-07-2009, 15:09
I agree. Also the reason nobody is getting the vaccine is that it isn't ready yet..
Preventing sick people from getting treated in order to reduce world population is against the whole ethos of the NHS surely...lol

Okay maybe my imagination is running a little wild, but over the last few days with watching the news people who have contracted Swine Flu are not been given Tamiflu. If there is to be a more serious outbreak come the autumn as predicted surely they should be speeding up the process of creating a vaccination and distrubuting it to those most vunerable so the symptoms won't be as severe as anticipated but they're not. It's only 5 weeks on Tuesday until the 1st September.
I know no-one is going to admit that they are trying to reduce the population but I'm just thinking of the bigger picture. There is a global recession, there is less people in work> less people paying taxes and pension contributions> ect yet those most vunreable to this diesase are the ones who rely on taxes and global spending to care for them, but with more people been made redundant everyday the resources are reducing. If a Government can save revenue then I think that would consider it not just the UK but other countries as well.

They are testing the vaccine on volunteers in Australia at the moment. Personally its worrying they aren't making the other vaccine, or not enough of it, for the normal flu virus. We may be protected against Swine Flu, but then we will get loads of people getting normal flu.

A child who was diagnosed with swine flu last week has died, the Public Health Agency of Northern Ireland has confirmed.
The child, who attended a special needs school, was one of two people diagnosed with swine flu.
The PHA said children who attend schools for those with severe learning difficulties should receive the flu vaccine as soon as possible.
It said that there is no evidence that the flu is circulating widely, but warned that it is not possible to predict when this may happen. It urged those eligible to get immunised as soon as possible.
This year's flu vaccine protects against three strains of flu, including the strain H1N1, known as swine flu.
Twenty people died from swine flu in Northern Ireland during last year's outbreak.
A recent report in the Lancet medical journal said that 70 children in England died from swine flu between June 2009 and March 2010.
