CORRIE legend Betty Williams is to be SACKED from the Rovers, TV Biz can reveal.
Barmaid Betty, who has served up her famous Lancashire hotpots since 1969, is given the push by newly-promoted manager Poppy Morales this summer.
But stalwart Betty, played by Betty Driver, 88, WON’T be leaving the show. Bosses have told her she can stay on as long as she likes.
Her card is marked at the Rovers when landlord Steve McDonald promotes feisty Poppy (Sophiya Haque).
Steve (Simon Gregson) puts her in charge when mum Liz (Bev Callard) goes to Spain to stay with his twin Andy.
Poppy fires Betty — best known by her former surname of Turpin — for refusing to swap shifts.
Betty was once given the chop by legendary landlady Annie Walker when she was working behind the bar with Bet Lynch.
After her latest sacking, she tells locals: “Sacked, after all the years I’ve given this place. Annie Walker — now that was somebody to be sacked by. Alec Gilroy and Bet — at least they sacked people with a bit of class.
“But to get my cards from that madam Poppy when she’s not even been here two minutes, it’s nothing short of scandalous.”
Despite 40 years on the show, Betty is determined to carry on working to avoid disappointing her fans.
An insider told TV Biz: “Betty is a viewers’ favourite. She’s got a place here as long as she wants it. She’s more of a fixture than the cobbles.
“She’ll be here for a long time to come — she’ll just be on the other side of the bar for a change.”
Betty has landed in trouble with other Rovers’ landladies.
She was shown the door when Annie Walker (Doris Speed) accused her of pinching cash. Her only other break in service was when she walked out in 1995 after Jack (Bill Tarmey) and Vera Duckworth (Liz Dawn) took over the pub.
Vera demanded that Betty do the cleaning as well as serve behind the bar and make hotpots.
But when Betty threatened to start selling her famous dish in rival pub The Flying Horse, Vera apologised and begged her to return.
I can't imagine the Rovers without Betty's hotpot :nono: :D
