Widower Evelyn Berisford (Margot Leicester), is shocked when Frank Carter (David Fleeshman), a business associate of her late husband and son-in-law, arrives at her home and reveals her husband was not the honest business man she thought. Feeling unsettled by Carter’s visit, she confronts her son in law Alan (Stephen Beckett) over his dealings with Carter, who admits that her husband and Bob were involved in smuggling cigarettes and booze into the country illegally. Shocked by the revelation that her husband was a crook, Evelyn tells Alan to end all cooperation with Carter.

At the Aidensfield Arms, David (David Longsdale) brings Tomasz Bukowski (Niholas Asbury), a Polish visitor looking to find an old friend he lost touch with after the war. Dawn (Nikki Sanderson) is swept up in the romance of his story and at her wits end with the pub’s latest pianist and is pleased when Tomasz offers his musical services in return for their help in his endeavour.

Meanwhile, Evelyn’s daughter Jackie (Lisa Stevenson) has become increasingly suspicious of her mother’s uneasiness since Carter’s visit and confides her fears in Carol Cassidy (Lisa Kay), who asks Mason (Joe McFadden) to keep an eye on the family. As Evelyn continues to receive threats from Carter who’s angry he’s been cut out of the deal, she confronts Alan about why he hasn’t put a stop to it. However, when he tells her that without this illegal revenue they’ll be destitute and assures her that they’re safe to carry on as Carter cannot inform the police without incriminating himself, Evelyn finds herself in a moral dilemma – should she stick to her morals, or take this opportunity to seize all profits and maintain the lifestyle her and her family are used to?

Mason checks in on Evelyn, who’s reluctant to talk given her new accomplice status, but Mason’s convinced she’s hiding something. After the family dog is found dead in the garden and an ominous male figure appears in the garden at night – Evelyn begins living in fear. The trouble escalates, when Carter drives Evelyn’s car off the road, severely injuring her, but she refuses to tell Mason the truth about the accident.

When Mason’s suspicions lead him to check Carter out, he finds he’s covered his tracks well, and Mason can do nothing but wait for real proof of Carter’s guilt. However, when her grandson Richard (William Deacon) goes missing, Mason’s hopeful she’ll be forced to reveal the truth. After finding Alan with Richard at Carter’s, Mason sees Alan is culpable, but still has no proof. Can Mason force a confession from Evelyn while she still fears for her grandson’s safety?

In the Aidensfield Arms, Tomasz has returned for his last night’s stay, having found his lost love too happy to disturb. He agrees to perform one last time, but after discouraging David from taking up lessons and buying a battered old piano, inadvertently becomes the victim of David’s frustration and needs a trip to A&E after having all his fingers caught in the piano lid!

Meanwhile, Blaketon (Derek Fowlds) receives a call about Janet, and goes up to her farm. On Tomasz’ return to the pub from A&E, there is a visitor waiting for him. Will Tomasz get the happy ending he dreamed of, and will Dawn’s hopes for a fairytale ending for Tomasz come true?
