PC Nate Roberts (Ben Richards) walks into Deansgate School with a spring in his step, due to the two attractive teachers by his side: Becky James (Naomi Ryan) and Laura (Sam Loggin). His flirting is interrupted when he sees parent Jermaine Brooker (Andy Seaman) squaring up to Matt Gilbert (Liam Evans-Ford), while Jermaine’s mortified son Carlton (Dion Laughton) watches on in horror.
Nate manages to break them up and after the two men walk away, Carlton runs into school. Later that morning, Laura calls Nate for his help when a fight between Carlton and another pupil erupts in her classroom. Nate takes Carlton out into the corridor, but he refuses to say why he started the fight. Intrigued by Carlton and his family life, Nate does some digging and is interested to learn that Jermaine was present at the rape of Stacey Hayes (Jessica Ellerby) 18 months before and, whilst totally innocent of any involvement, has become the victim of a slanderous campaign. Before Nate gets the chance to speak to Jermaine about what’s been happening, officers are called to a disturbance at Jermaine’s house where he is found badly beaten.
At St Hugh’s hospital, DC Jo Masters (Sally Rogers) and Trainee DC Will Fletcher (Gary Lucy) speak to Carlton and Jemaine’s wife, Liz (Phillipa Peak). A clearly frustrated Carlton accuses Matt, the man Jermaine was fighting with earlier that day, of beating up his dad. Clearly angry with Stacey and the way his family’s lives have changed since the court case surrounding her rape, he storms out.
Will and Jo continue to investigate and discover that that Matt is Stacey’s boyfriend. Could he be the suspect they’re after? The two officers go to Stacey’s and are shocked to find Carlton there, screaming and shouting at her. After Carlton is arrested, Stacey tells the officers that she told Matt about her past the night before and is genuinely stunned to hear about Jermaine’s attack.
While Nate takes on the responsibility of looking after Carlton’s welfare, CID investigate who attacked Jermaine and uncover why there is such a hateful campaign against an innocent man. They are stunned when they finally uncover the suspect.
