The BBC has confirmed that Casualty will leave its Bristol production base to join the corporation's expanding drama base in Cardiff.

The decision to relocate the long-running medical drama comes as part of BBC vision director Jana Bennett's plan for "a radical shift in the whole set up of broadcasting" that will result in more productions heading out of London and others - including Casualty - moving outside England.

The move was announced in October but was subject to funding approval that has now been granted.

In a statement, the BBC said: "We have previously said that, as part of the Network Supply Strategy, moving Casualty will play a significant part in fulfilling our commitment to building a creatively sustainable centre of excellence for drama in Wales and, more broadly, it will accelerate the development of the creative sector there."

How many actors will leave because they live in Bristol and don't want to move to Cardiff - Derek (Charlie) for one has lived in Bristol for 20 years with his family, imagine if he left! How many crew will have to leave too?

There's no need to move it.

The move will also have an adverse knock on affect on the Bristol community as there will be many shops and restaurants who cast members use when they are filming. Many businesses will suffer with the withdrawl of casualty.

But their loss will be Cardiff's gain.

People who may have families or who cannot drive etc will not want to make the move. In all reality they will a lot of new crew which will not work as smoothly as the current one - I imagine after 20 odd years they have got it down to a fine art.

Also what Cardiff doesn't have it won't miss. The economy of Bristol gets an estimated £10 million a year. Cardiff already have Dr Who anyway!

Apparently Derek (Charlie) implied in a recent program that to get over the problems of bilingual signs and scenery, they would be filming the outside scenes in Bristol and the indoor in Cardiff. That seems incredibly pointless to me.

A more sensible solution would be to rebuild the current set. Surely that would be more cost effective???

I agree it sounds very silly to move what with all the financial problems at the moment, it would be a bad move anyway but worse with whats going on at the moment

Unless most of the backstage crew are willing to travel from Bristol to Cardiff then the beeb are going to have one huge mega redundacy bil on their hands, because if there are crew members who have been working on the show since the begining they will be entitled to a huge redundancy package.
