William Hurt will star opposite Russell Crowe in director Ridley Scott's big screen Robin Hood reinvention.

Hurt, whose name has been linked to the project for several months, will portray William Marshall, the Earl of Pembroke, a real-life figure and skilled jouster who was one of the most powerful men in Europe, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The medieval epic will delve into the origins of the key characters in the Robin Hood legend. Joining Crowe in the cast are Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand and Alan Doyle as Merry Men. Cate Blanchett will play Maid Marian, while Mark Strong and Vanessa Redgrave are also on board the movie.

The untitled Universal film is currently shooting in the UK.

Grieving star Vanessa Redgrave has pulled out of forthcoming movie Robin Hood, giving up the role which would have been her first acting job since the tragic death of her daughter Natasha Richardson.

The actress signed on to star in Sir Ridley Scott's blockbuster, alongside Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett, just a week after Richardson died from a brain injury following a skiing accident in March.

The acting legend was set to tackle the role of Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, mother of the folklore hero's nemesis Prince John, played by Oscar Isaacs.

But now it would appear Redgrave is not yet ready to return to work - Dame Eileen Atkins has confirmed she has accepted the part in the 2010 movie.

And Atkins admits she is "terrified" about the project.

She says, "They keep rewriting the script and changing my lines quite dramatically, so I'm terrified of forgetting them."

Poor Vanessa it's no surprise that she has decided to pull out of the movie. Eileen Atkins will be a good replacement though.

Rhys Ifans has signed on to star in upcoming blockbuster Nottingham - six months after his ex-girlfriend Sienna Miller was booted from the new Robin Hood movie.

The Welsh actor is preparing to play King Richard in Sir Ridley Scott's forthcoming film - after former flame Miller, 27, was dropped weeks before production began amid reports she was too young to play Maid Marian.

She was then replaced by Cate Blanchett, 40.

Rhys, who was reportedly engaged to the actress during their 2007-08 courtship, is said to have accepted the regal role after Scott personally invited him to join the cast.

A source tells Britain's Sunday Mirror, "Ridley thought Rhys was a recognisable face fans would love to see and would be perfect for the part.

"He made the call himself because he knew Rhys would be more likely to say yes to him in person. Luckily, Rhys had space in his schedule and jumped at the chance. But I'm not sure he would have joined up quite so easily if Sienna had still been one of the stars of the film."

The role is another boost to Ifans' growing movie career - earlier this year he wrapped filming the lead role in Mr Nice, the eagerly-anticipated biopic of Welsh drug smuggler Howard Marks, which is slated for release next year.

Russell Crowe's new Robin Hood movie has suffered two further safety scares with an actor and studio aide both injured in separate incidents.

Last month the $176 million (£110 million) Ridley Scott epic was brought to a halt after an unnamed actor was hurt during the filming of a battle scene in Wales.

British tabloid the Sunday Mirror reports the production has since been blighted with two further accidents on set.

An unnamed actor has reportedly broken his ankles after missing a crash mat in a high-wire fall at Pinewood studios in Buckinghamshire, England.

In a separate incident a studio worker has suffered neck injuries from falling into a pit at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, England.

The film, which also stars Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion, is due for release next year.

Danny Huston will play King Richard in Russell Crowe's Robin Hood, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Huston, who recently starred in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, has been cast as the historical figure known as Richard the Lionheart thanks to his heroics in the Third Crusade.

Production is currently underway on Robin Hood in the UK, with Ridley Scott directing the medieval epic from a script by Ethan Reiff, Cyrus Voris and Brian Helgeland.

The cast includes Crowe as the notorious outlaw, Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, William Hurt as the Earl of Pembroke and Matthew Macfadyen as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

British actress Sienna Miller was "disappointed" to have been dropped from Russell Crowe's new Robin Hood movie - but insists her replacement Cate Blanchett was a much better choice.

The star was originally signed on to play Maid Marian, but she mysteriously left the project last year amid rumours she had been dropped because she was considered too young to play 45 year old Crowe's love interest.

The 27 year old admits that although she was looking forward to starring in the epic movie, she accepts that Blanchett, 40, is much better suited to the part.

She says, "If I had to make a choice between myself and Cate, then I'd choose her as well. Of course I was disappointed, but I am also big enough to know these things happen all the time in the film industry - it's just that when they happen to me it's news."

Cameras used to film Russell Crowe's new Robin Hood movie have been snatched by thieves who made off with thousands of dollars worth of equipment in a massive film studio heist.

Five hooded burglars cracked open padlocks and smashed through windows before removing door hinges to get inside Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, England in the early hours of Friday morning.

The gang then snatched high-value cameras and lenses, which were being used for Sir Ridley Scott's upcoming epic, about the outlaw who famously stole from the rich to give to the poor.

Security guards rushed to the props building after alarms were sounded but failed to catch the thieves before they reportedly sped off in a sports car.

Detective Constable Sebastian Wilson, who is investigating the burglary, is now appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information about the crime.

Wilson says, "They stole various specialist cameras and lenses which are worth a lot of money.

"They have also stolen a Sony Srw 5000, a device which converts footage into high-definition format and which alone is worth £65,000.

"The thieves were disturbed by a security guard who believes that one of the vehicles used in the daring raid was an expensive silver coloured sports car, possibly a Lexus.

"I am particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have been offered specialist filming equipment for sale or who saw vehicles driving in the area at speed."

NOTTINGHAM will be rolling out the red carpet for the "man in green" as the city stages the UK premiere of Ridley Scott's new Robin Hood film.

The action-packed movie, starring Russell Crowe as Robin and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, will be premiered simultaneously in Nottingham and at the Cannes Film Festival on May 12 – two days before it goes on general release.

Nottingham's gala event will be held at the Cineworld cinema in the Cornerhouse. The organisers are considering staging a live link-up with the Cannes event, where the film is set to open the festival.

"We've pulled off a real coup to host the UK's only gala screening so it's a very significant event for the city," said Sheriff of Nottingham Councillor Leon Unczur.

While Cannes is preparing to play host to the stars of the film, the guests at the Nottingham screening will include city dignitaries and, potentially, famous denizens such as Sir Paul Smith.

Also, hundreds of invited guests will join 100 members of the public – and Nottingham Post readers have a chance of being among them by entering our competition (see panel).

Coun Unczur, who will welcome guests to the special screening, believes the film could bring £50m to Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, as a result of tourism spin-offs.

"The release of the latest Hollywood take on the Robin Hood legend is a really big deal for Nottingham, so I'm pleased we're rolling out the red carpet here to mark the occasion," he said.

"We know that when Hollywood's spotlight shines on Robin, even more people will want to come to Nottingham to see where his legendary stories unfolded."

Currently, Nottingham Castle and Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre are playing host to a joint exhibition of costumes and props from the £110m movie.

The exhibition and premiere have come about as the result of a joint campaign by the city council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Experience Nottinghamshire who pitched the suggestions to filmmakers Universal.

A month-long celebration of the famous outlaw will run in the city and county throughout May to mark the film's release on May 14.

Jennifer Spencer, chief executive at Experience Nottinghamshire, said: "Over the past few months we've seen Nottingham and Notts propelled on to the global media platform.

"This, along with securing an exclusive Robin Hood movie exhibition and gala screening, is down to the strength of the Robin Hood campaign partnership and the hard work of those involved.

"The gala screening will provide the perfect opportunity to celebrate our successes and I'd like to thank everyone for their support."
