View Full Version : Tointon, Groves to be written out of 'Enders
EastEnders screen couple Kara Tointon and Ricky Groves are to be written out of the BBC soap.
The contracts of the pair were allegedly up for renewal this summer, but the soap's producers took the decision to write them out in a storyline which sees their characters' relationship put to the test.
Speaking of the move, 25-year-old Tointon, who has played unlucky-in-love mother Dawn Swann since 2005, said: "Being at EastEnders has been the best four years of my life. The show has given me fantastic opportunities and I've been able to learn so much from the people I've worked with. I will always hold the show dear to my heart and will continue to be an avid fan."
She added: "I'm excited about what the next few months have in store for Dawn and as an actress I look forward to trying new roles."
Meanwhile, Groves, 40, commented: "It is coming on to ten years now that I have been at EastEnders. The programme has been very kind to me over the years and it has been a wonderful experience playing the role of the loveable Garry Hobbs. However now seems a good time to try new opportunities and I am looking forward to exploring new things."
Executive producer Diederick Santer said of the move: "EastEnders has benefited hugely from Ricky and Kara's great performances over the last few years. As individuals and together Garry and Dawn have had their share of comedy, drama and excitement and Ricky and Kara have delivered it all with talent, skill and flair."
He added: "They've got some fantastic stuff to come - this spring and summer sees their love truly put to the test - and they go with our thanks and very best wishes."
Meanwhile, an insider teased: "There's another spanner in the works to come for the hapless mechanic when his relationship with Dawn is once against tested this summer. Will there be a happy ending or will they go their separate ways when they leave Walford?"
The pair will remain filming until summer and will bow out on screen later in the year.
I so wanted them to get together and stay together. :(
Yeah let them stay together and leave together... there is nothing more for them

It is not a great shock that these two are being written out. Both Gary and Dawn haven't had a lot to do lately. Dawn's only decent story was with the mad Doc and Gary has just been hanging around with Minty for years.

Glad Garry is going, hes been annoying me for the last few years, the only thing he had going was his and Minty's banter. Sad about Dawn leaving, but she went a bit boring when they killed off Jase, I loved those 2 together, if they showed her bonding with Jay after Jase's death, then she would have been a part of EE, but lately she feels more like an extra.

It has been announced that Kara Tointon and Ricky Groves, who play Dawn and Garry, will be leaving EastEnders.
The pair's contracts have not been renewed, and they will leave Albert Square in ‘a dramatic storyline’ to air in summer. Kara, said, ‘It has been the best four years of my life. I will always hold the show dear to my heart.’ Ricky added, ‘It has been wonderful playing Garry. But I am looking forward to new things.’
I'm glad Dawn is leaving she was a wooden character played by a terrrible actress
I like Garry so i hope he gets a happy ending but he is too good for Dawn

aww let them go.....do not really give a hoot.. so bye bye Garry and Dawn...wonder if they will LEAVE together ???:searchme: ( I smell a story line LOL )
Poor Minty he will be alone again :-(:crying:
Once they put Gary and Dawn together there was nothing left for the characters to do. Can't keep having Dawn turn him down and Gary mope about for a bit.
Hope they do have a happy exit though.

Garry is long overdue the chop. I cant believe he's lasted almost a decade on the show, he should of left around the same time that Lynne did as he's done near enough nothing of any interest since then. I don't mind Dawn though, shame about her going.

There's always a job in the launderette going. I bet either Kara or Gary will be on one of the reality shows before the end of the year, SCD, I'm a Celeb.
You are probably right, it is bound to happen

If Kara or Gary want to avoid the disapointment of not getting any other roles like some of their ex cast members they should think about going to acting classes. I'm not having a dig at their acting skills but both have no drama training before they joined the square and without any proper training behind them they are unlikely to match the income they were paid at EE. That is why so many ex soap stars disapear into the unknown not just EE. It happens to them all they are picked from the public randomly, thrushed into the limelight and give a huge load of cash for not doing a lot. Then they get fed up, which most people do after doing the same job for a few years and they are clueless about securing other acting jobs.
What the writers of soaps should be doing when looking for new cast members is recruit from drama schoolsinstead of picking joe public of the streets, in the early years of EE, Michelle, Mark, Hattie and other young cast members all came from Grange Hill at least coming from drama school they have some training and knowledge on what is required on finding different roles.

Does anyone else think that these two being written out links into the Facebook insident about two months ago, that was supposedly fake, because it said that dannielle had left already.:hmm:
EASTENDERS babe Kara Tointon is set to star in Strictly Come Dancing for a SECOND time, TV Biz can reveal.
The brunette, 25, is a massive fan of the BBC1 ballroom hit but had been banned from taking part for the past three years.
Soap boss Diedrick Santer stopped cast members signing up for the show as it caused chaos in the filming schedules, although Kara did a charity special last year and won.
Now she is free to shimmy and shake her way on to the next series after being given the push from the BBC1 soap, alongside her on-screen love Ricky Groves, who plays Garry Hobbs.
The decision to drop Kara — who plays Dawn Swann — from August means she can finally fulfil her dream.
A Strictly insider confirmed yesterday the show was in talks to sign her up for the new series in September.
The source added: “Kara has made it no secret that she has wanted to do Strictly for years. Hopefully we can make it happen.
“She’s exactly the kind of contestant that we want on the show.”
TV Biz told yesterday how Strictly chiefs want to “sex up” the show to score a younger audience and compete with The X Factor.
They will hire younger professional dancers as well as hotter celebs.
Kara — who is dating ex-EastEnder and I’m A Celeb winner Joe Swash — won last year’s Strictly special for Sports Relief with a sizzling samba.
Her partner was ex-England cricketer Mark Ramprakash

EastEnders star Kara Tointon cried after being axed from the BBC soap, she has admitted.
The actress was last month told that her character Dawn Swann would be written out of the programme. Ricky Groves, who plays her on screen partner Garry Hobbs, is also on the way out.
Reflecting on the decision, Tointon told the Daily Star: "I was heartbroken when they told me and I have to admit I did cry.
"I just have to dust myself down and get back out there. I've already told them that if they do plan to kill Dawn, I will refuse to close my eyes in the dying scenes!"
Recent reports have claimed that Tointon will star in the new series of Strictly Come Dancing in the autumn.

EastEnders star Kara Tointon has revealed that she cried real tears when she filmed her exit scenes.
The actress is bowing out from her role as Dawn Swann on the BBC One soap after producers decided not to renew her contract earlier this year.
Discussing her last day on set, Tointon told the Daily Star Sunday: "I did not want to leave but it's a case of moving on. They are real tears though and I won't spoil the ending but it will shock fans."
The 25-year-old has previously admitted that she felt "heartbroken" over the decision to write out her character - and later claimed that Dawn deserves a happy ending.
Tointon has been tipped for appearances on ITV1's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! and BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing in recent months.

Kara Tointon has admitted that she would like to return to EastEnders.

Kara Tointon has reportedly admitted that EastEnders producers made the right decision when they axed her character earlier this year.
The actress, who played Dawn Swann on the BBC One soap, said that all storylines surrounding her Walford alter ego were exhausted.
Tointon, 26, revealed that she was heartbroken when it emerged that her character was to be written out of the soap.
However, she said that Dawn's inability to learn from mistakes was getting on her nerves, adding: "I guess she annoyed me a bit.
"There was nothing left for my character. I wasn't really doing anything. You can only stand and order a sandwich so many times in the caff," she said.
Kara Tointon has admitted that her four-year stint on EastEnders ended disappointingly.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, the Strictly Come Dancing winner, insisted that it was a relief to be axed from her role as Dawn Swann - despite previously stating that she missed the show.
"I knew it was time for me to go. When you don't have a big storyline it can be boring. All your character seems to do is order a sandwich in the cafe for months on end," she revealed. "But you're also conscious that you need to pay the mortgage."
The star added: "You get caught up in the 'EastEnders' bubble and start to answer to your character's name. In a way I was relieved when Dawn was written out. Would I have had the guts to leave myself?"
Since leaving EastEnders, which she appeared in from 2005, Tointon has guest-hosted BBC Three show Don't Call Me Stupid as well as a number of pantomimes.
She is currently starring as Eliza Doolittle in a West End production of Pygmalion which also features Rupert Everett as Henry Higgins.
Ricky Groves has said he'd love to see Garry Hobbs to return to Albert Square as a lottery winner.
The 43-year-old actor played the hapless mechanic for nine years before he was seen leaving with fiancee Dawn Swann on a barge to live happily ever after. But Ricky told Inside Soap magazine he has his comeback all planned out.
He said: "I always had this idea that Garry would return and pretend he's won the lottery - but all he's won is 50 grand on a scratch card and now he's blown it.
"So he turns up in a Mercedes to prove he's done all right, but then truth comes out and he crumbles.
"Hopefully he'd still be with Dawn though."
But whatever kind of comeback the writers might give Garry, Ricky is up for it.
He said: "It was a privilege to do a job like EastEnders, and I'd love to go back.
"If they wanted to reintroduce Garry, then I'd be there."

You know soap actors make me laugh, with their hare-brain ideas to bring back their characters. Characters who have been axed for a reason it's because their acting has been mince and the show wants shut of them. They've not got a hhope in hell in being asked back so why not just spit it out. They need the work and they want the soaps to take them back.
