Executive producer Susan Bower dishes on the big storylines coming up in 2009
While the sanity of one of Erinsborough's longest-standing and most respected residents will be questioned in 2009, another will suffer a sudden deterioration in health. A major feud will also break out between two long-time best friends and at least one marriage will hit a significant hurdle. Here's a closer look at what's coming up in an explosive 2009.
Karl's mental health crisis
For years, the residents of Ramsay Street have turned to Karl Kennedy for everything from medical advice to a shoulder to cry on, but in a surprise development, it's Karl who will be most in need of help and guidance when the series returns. While authorities believe Zeke may have died in the rafting tragedy, Karl clings to the desperate hope that the boy is alive and waiting to be found. Even when evidence is uncovered suggesting Zeke perished, Karl believes his stepson will return home. He begins having dreams about the missing teen, leading to concern for his mental wellbeing. "The doctor becomes almost obsessive about the fact that Zeke's body hasn't been found," Susan Bower confirms. "Karl is really the driving force behind the beginning of the show in 2009."
Susan's MS returns
Grief-stricken over the apparent loss of Zeke, Susan is put under enormous strain. So severe is the stress that it triggers her MS - a fact she's determined to hide from her family. "Susan's trying to hold everything together," Jackie explains. "She's incredibly concerned about Karl and his belief that Zeke's still alive, but she starts to resent that she's going through all of this completely on her own. She feels abandoned by Karl, but she knows she has to stay strong for everyone else," Jackie adds. "The stress of it all will cause the relapse."
Miranda's devastating secret revealed
In 2008, the mentally unstable Nicola did everything she could to break up her sister Miranda's marriage to Steve. While the couple eventually managed to get their union back on track, their marital woes are far from over, and Steve and Miranda will find themselves facing another major hurdle. "This time it's Miranda who puts their marriage in jeopardy," Susan Bower reveals. "Their daughter's pregnancy causes Miranda and Steve to re-examine their own lives and an important secret of Miranda's comes out which could split them up for good."
Libby and Steph declare war
Over the past decade, Libby and Steph have been there for each other through thick and thin. But that's all set to change in 2009 when Steph refuses to listen to her bestie's advice, sparking a huge falling out and forcing several neighbours to choose sides. "This is massive," reveals Kym Valentine, who plays Libby. "When we were first told about it, we felt like our characters were breaking up because it's as if we've been a couple all this time. Carla and I hated the thought of having to be mean to each other. It was hideous. They have some very public spats because Libby doesn't think the choices Steph's making are the best ones for her. And, this time, Steph doesn't want to hear what Libby has to say." "This is definitely not just a minor argument between Steph and Libby," Carla adds. "It's one that is sustaining and what happens between them is a real shock."
Guess who?
Can you work out which Ramsay Street residents will be involved in these dramatic storylines?
*Two less than honourable characters will form an unlikely but formidable alliance. And it's safe to say they have very different motives for joining forces!
*A shock event will put lives on the line. Meanwhile, another character will have to fight for survival after receiving a devastating diagnosis.
*One popular resident will be horrified when criminal Guy Sykes reappears in Erinsborough!
*Two residents will embark on shock career changes. (we know who!)
*One character will become consumed by her desire to have a baby, even placing her life on the line to realise her dream....
