PC Nate Roberts (Ben Richards) reluctantly heads to Deansgate School after a fire is started deliberately in one of the classrooms. Attractive art teacher Becky James (Naomi Ryan) catches his eye, but she is horrified to learn that her classroom was set ablaze on purpose and pupil Jimmy Ryan (Nathanael Baring) is devastated that his coursework has been destroyed.

Later that day, Nate is dismayed when Inspector Rachel Weston (Claire Goose) appoints him Safer School’s Officer, to keep an eye on things. While Nate looks for his new office, a fight breaks out in the playground between Jimmy’s girlfriend, Kadisha Watts (Naomi J Lewis) and Jasmin Clark (La-Charne Jolly). Becky and Nate eventually break up the fight and the girls are hauled into a classroom where they are questioned. The girls reveal nothing but as Kadisha leaves, she puts Jasmin in the frame for the fire.

That afternoon, Nate is sent an anonymous text that reveals Kadisha and Jasmin are planning another fight in the local park. Sergeant Smith (Alex Walkinshaw) and Nate head to the scene, but they are confused when they see Michael Clark (Malachi Kirby) and Karl Peters (Kyle Summercorn) beating Kadisha up. Nate chases after Michael, who manages to get away, while Smithy runs after Karl. The Sergeant manages to apprehend him, but Karl pulls out a knife and viciously stabs Smithy in the chest. Stunned, Karl eventually pulls the knife out, leaving Smithy terrified, alone and fighting for breath.

At St Hugh’s hospital, Smithy is tended to immediately, while a shaken Nate waits outside the emergency room, wracked with guilt. Rachel gently questions Nate and tells him he can’t blame himself, but the PC is determined to find Smithy’s attacker. Once Smithy regains consciousness, he talks to Rachel, recalling the painful memories of what happened.

Emotional but determined, he goes through the list of suspects, adamant the attacker will be caught. As the case progresses, Michael is eventually brought into custody, where he argues and struggles. Nate catches sight of him and seeing red, uses unnecessary force to restrain him. As the case unravels and the truth over the fire and Kadisha’s attack is revealed, Nate realises there is a lot of work that needs to be done at Deansgate and offers to stay on as the Safer School’s officer. But has he got what it takes?
