View Full Version : Tax on chocolate?
A controversial proposal to campaign for a tax on chocolate to help curb obesity has been narrowly rejected by doctors.
Lanarkshire GP David Walker led calls for an increase in chocolate prices as a way of tackling weight-related conditions like diabetes.
But delegates at a British Medical Association (BMA) conference in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, voted down the plan by just two votes.
Do you think that tax on chocolate would make a difference in the fight of obesity?

Chocolate is not the only food that causes obesity. What about Burgers, chips, hot dogs, crisps....
Where would the line be drawn on what foods to tax? We pay enough taxes already its not fair on the people who only eat these foods occasionally as a treat.
What is chocolate classed as? Tax is paid on cakes, but not biscuits.
If it was to be taxed it would only be a few pence more on small bars and maybe 10p on larger bars. Wouldn't stop me buying it though.
At the end of the day, people are going to eat what they like. Putting the price of food items up by a few pence isn't really going to do much to deter people. A better idea would be to go to the manufacturers and see if there is a way of making the product healthier.

Chocolate is already too expensive. Even Freddo's have gone up .
I am so glad I don't eat chocolate bars.
What! they cant do this to me!
Im sorry but loads of us eat crap, chocolate and all the other stuff
There needs to be self control and more exercise, what does that say about us as a nation that the older way to make us loose weight is to tax more things so we are forced not to buy them, we should do it for ourselves! not being forced to buy the cost

Exactly Abbie, I'm sure that exercising and eating chocolate is better than sitting around and not eating chocolate because of the cost.

I know 15p for a fredo bar now it's scandalous. Seriously if someone wants chocolate they will buy it, chocolate bars like twix and mars bars are almost 50p each and it doesn't stop people buying them. We need to think about our kids and the future generation and prevent them from becoming obese. one way would be not to give them chocolate to begin with, if a child doesn't have money they can't buy it on the way to school. If a parent is going to give their children chocolate and other fattening treats they need to moderate them, give them as treats not everyday.

When I was little my parents used to put the sweet box where we couldn't reach it. And we were rationed to 10-20p of sweets after school - those were the days of 1 and 2p sweets.

i dont think putting tax on chocolate will stop people from buying it. it will just make me more annoyed that it will become more expensive than it already is! people should be responsible for what they eat, you cant solely blame chocolate for people being obese
