Coronation Street actress Katherine Kelly has expressed her delight at being named 'TV Soap Personality' of the year at yesterday's Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards.

The 29-year-old, who plays Becky Granger in the Weatherfield soap, was nominated for the award alongside co-star Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald) and EastEnders actress Patsy Palmer (Bianca Jackson).

Speaking of her win, she told DS: "I'm absolutely thrilled with this award. Just to be nominated alongside Simon and Patsy was fantastic as I grew up watching them both on TV and loving their work. I can't believe that I won."

She added: "The trophy will probably spend about a month of my mum's mantelpiece and then it'll go to The Lamproom Theatre in Barnsley, where I'm a patron of the youth theatre."

She was seen leaving the ceremony with the large award hanging out of her relatively small handbag, before hauling the statue through Euston station to catch a Manchester-bound train home.

She fully deserves it. My favourite character out of all soap at the moment. The actress plays her wonderfully. Well done Katherine

As you may have already read, Coronation Street's Katherine Kelly bagged the 'TV Soap Personality' of the Year award at yesterday's Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards.

Her co-star Simon Gregson - who was also nominated for the award - had better watch out, though, as Katherine was overheard joking about how she could use the trophy in a Corrie scene.

If it was up to her, she'd be using the metal statue to re-enact the moment Tracy Barlow struck the fatal blow to Charlie Stubbs back in January 2007. She jested: "It's a bit like the statue that Tracy Barlow bashed Charlie Stubbs over the head with. If Steve McDonald steps out of line, he'd better watch out!"

I still can't get that cracking noise out of my head from that Tracy/Charlie scene!

EastEnders also bagged the prize for 'TV Soap of the Year'.
