US soap General Hospital is bracing itself for a viewer backlash following reports that it is planning to axe five of its biggest stars.

The futures of Greg Vaughan, Rick Hearst, Megan Ward and Leslie Charleson are all in doubt as network executives plan to introduce a younger cast, reports TV Guide Canada.

An insider said: "There’s a bloodbath on the horizon and it’s not going to be pretty."

Meanwhile, it is claimed that actress Rebecca Herbst may be let go from the series if she refuses to take a pay cut.

In November, reports surfaced that ABC Daytime had informed all employees they would have to take salary cuts to avoid the network suffering the same financial problems as rivals NBC and CBS.

Two General Hospital stars have been dropped to recurring status, fuelling speculation about impending max sackings at the soap.

Emmy winner Rick Hearst and Megan Ward have both been taken off contract with the ABC show and placed on recurring status, with more axings rumoured to be on the way, reports website Soapcentral.

A source said: "Show execs felt it would be better to focus their attention on some of the show's other 'big name' leading ladies. In trying to cut costs, it was widely believed that cutting Ward would rock the boat far less than losing some of the other talent."

Last month, it was rumoured that producers were planning on sacking five of the soaps biggest stars, with both Hearst and Ward among those believed to be facing the axe.

Ah, thanks. Funny for a tv character to mention another soap as his favourite programme

He actually has a little telly that he carries around with him so he doesn't miss General hospital. Although I don't think he has done it so much in the later series. Once he kidnapped the his favourite character in general hospital because he thought there was something wrong with him.

In the first couple of seasons he always had his portable tv with him, especially during clinic duty.

Nowadays we don't see his telly, although there are occasional references to General Hospital.
