CORRIE’S pigeon-loving Jack Duckworth is set to get a new bird in his life a year after on-screen wife Vera died.

Bosses are searching for an actress to date widower Jack, played by Bill Tarmey, 67.

And she will share his passion for pigeons — unlike late wife Vera, played by Liz Dawn.

A soap source said: “Since Liz left Jack’s been a little bit lost. He’s still a father figure to Tyrone but now he’s married there’s not much for him to do.

“Jack is a really popular character and needs a new partner.”

Producers will have to tread carefully as many viewers were huge fans of Vera — whose on-screen partnership with Jack lasted more than 25 years.

Actress Liz, 69, quit last year after a long battle with lung disease emphysema and more than 12.5million watched her dramatic exit when Vera suddenly died in her armchair.

Our source said: “Jack and Vera were one of the best onscreen partnerships ever.

“Vera’s departure was a touching moment but it’s been over a year and Jack will move on.

“We’ll have to handle the story sensitively as a lot of fans will be loyal to Vera.

“It will be a long search to find someone who has as much chemistry with Bill.”

How can they replace Vera. That is where Eastenders went wrong with Pauline when they tried to give her a new man. She was devoted to Arthur and Jack will always be devoted to Vera and no-one can replace her.

i know some people don't like her, but i think Auntie Pam has settled into the family unit well with Tyrone, Molly and Jack. i think they should just leave it at that for now.

I don't watch Corrie now but this is just wrong. Jack and Vera were married for a very long time. I'd like to see him devoted to his wife long after her death. If that makes the character boring then the script writers need to find him something else to do, aside from a new romance.

no they cant do that, Jack will always be Vera and Jack, there could be a way of getting him with a person just not a love interest, if you get what i mean, like a lodger but they kind of have that with Auntie Pam.

If they want to make Jack happy and give him a campanion why not pair him up with Blanche. They could attend dance classes together or some other hobby were she can nag him and it won't ruin the memory of Vera.

Or Jack and Rita.. they never hooked her up with anyone so why do it to Jack.. he needs a friend, not a girlfriend

Jack does not need a girlfriend - Vera was the only one for him

Yes I agree. A nice lady friend for Jack would be nice.

I thought Bill was supposed to be quitting this year? If so then I don't see the point of pairing him up with someone if hes going to be leaving. unless he leaves with them?

HERE’S the first glimpse of Corrie widow Jack Duckworth’s new bird — pigeon-loving Connie Rathbone.

The newcomer, played by veteran actress Rita May, filmed her first scenes on the Corrie cobbles yesterday.

Viewers will first see her on April 17, when she arranges a date with Jack (Bill Tarmey) after taking a shine to him on a walk in the street. But Jack worries what late wife Vera would think.

Surrogate daughter-in-law Molly Dobbs (Vicky Binns) tells him: “She’d want you to be happy.”

The actress has appeared in the soap 4 times before. In 1978 she played taxi driver Marjorie Pitts, then returned in 1981 as barmaid Freda. In 2000 she was Mrs Wilbeforce, looking to buy Jack's B&B. In 2001 she appeared as lollopop lady Brenda.

Coronation Street star Rita May has revealed that she feels a close affinity with her character Connie Rathbone.

The actress joined the cast of the ITV1 soap last month and her alter-ego has since been seen sharing stories of loss and bereavement with widower Jack Duckworth (Bill Tarmey).

Discussing her real-life inspiration for the role, May told This Morning: "My husband died 18 months ago. He was at the Edinburgh Festival and he came off stage and he said, 'I didn't feel very well, was that OK?', and collapsed and five days later he died.

"So I actually know what this character is feeling, so when I'm doing those scenes it's there inside me."

Though Connie was billed as a new love interest for Jack last month, May has confirmed that the pair's storyline will be a slow-burner.

"I have no idea if Connie and Jack will find love, we know as much as everybody else," she insisted. "I hope the fans of the show will understand that when you get to that age and you're left on your own, you need that companionship. You don't need to rush into anything.

"Personally, I can see me with someone else because I'm practical and a companion would be nice and my husband would've said: 'Go for it, girl'."

Prior to her Coronation Street role, May was best known for appearing on BBC comedy shows Early Doors and Drop Dead Gorgeous, as well as CITV drama Children's Ward.

I quite agree. Nice for Jack to have a friend with something in common with him.

I just wish that the scriptwriters would let younger people have a platonic relationship and not just OAPs.
