The final moments of Lost's fourth season episode 'The Shape Of Things To Come' featured an understated yet utterly scintillating conversation between Lost's two rival antagonists - Ben Linus and Charles Widmore. The meeting of these two warring factions, in the atmospheric dark of night, works as a delicious appetite-whetter for a presumably explosive final battle between the men at some stage in the future.

The Context

Linus and Widmore go back a long way on the island, but just prior to their meeting a group of mercenaries employed by Widmore had found the island and killed Ben's daughter Alex in front of his own eyes when he refused to come out of hiding.

In London, Linus emerged from a black cab late one night outside a hotel and entered the building, fobbing off the doorman with a false story about visiting some friends. Linus headed up to the Penthouse Suite in the lift, gaining access to it with a special key. He walked into a darkened room containing a bed with his nemesis Charles Widmore fast alseep in it...

The Moment

"Wake up Charles," says Ben in a calm tone. Widmore complies and turns on the bedside lamp.

"I wondered when you were going to show up. I see you've been getting more sun," replies Widmore.

"Iraq is lovely this time of year. When did you start sleeping with a bottle of Scotch beside your bed?" asks Ben.

"When the nightmares started," comes the blunt response from the bed. Widmore then pours himself a glass of the spirit before cutting straight to the point.

"Have you come here to kill me, Benjamin?"

"We both know I can't do that."

"Then why are you here?"

"I'm here, Charles, because you murdered my daughter."

"Don't stand there looking at me with those horrible eyes of yours and lay the blame for the death of that poor girl on me. We both know very well I didn't murder her at all, Benjamin. You did!"

"No, that's not true."

"Yes Benjamin, it is. You creep into my bedroom in the dead of night, like a rat, and have the audacity to pretend that you're the victim. I know who you are, boy. What you are. I know that everything you have you took from me. So once again I ask you - why are you here?"

"I'm here, Charles, to tell you that I'm going to kill your daughter. Penelope, is it? And once she's gone, once she's dead, then you'll understand how I feel. And you'll wish you hadn't changed the rules."

"You'll never find her. That island's mine, Benjamin. It always was. It will be again."

"But you'll never find it."

"Then I suppose the hunt is on for both of us."

"I suppose it is. Sleep tight Charles..."

With that less than fond farewell, Linus disappears into the night again.

The Aftermath

Currently, Penelope is still alive and the island hasn't been regained by Charles Widmore. Although Ben stated that he couldn't kill his enemy for undisclosed reasons, Widmore did meet with Sun after she was rescued from the island. He suggested an alliance and explained they both have a common goal - to kill Ben Linus.
