Bend It Like Beckham star Preeya Kalidas is joining EastEnders - as the sexy girlfriend of the soap's new charmer Syed Masood.

Preeya, 29, who starts to play Amira in April, said: "I can't wait for this next exciting adventure - to be part of a much loved and respected TV show. My family have watched it for years."

Preeya was also in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Bombay Dreams and films such as East is East.

EastEnders executive producer Diederick Santer added: "Preeya is a talented and gorgeous actress, and I can't wait to see what happens when Amira comes on the scene."

An Enders source said her character is expected to ruffle feathers on Albert Square: "She's very high maintenance and thinks she is quite the socialite. Saeed's mum Zainab just wants to find out if she's good enough for his son.

"She's spoilt and snobbish. But underneath she is a lonely and insecure girl."

Finally EE site have got the news of Preeya joining

A rich nouveau princess in Walford
Tue 3 Mar 2009

Preeya Kalidas will join EastEnders as Amira Shah, the beautiful and exceptionally spoilt girlfriend of Syed Masood.

Preeya Kalidas will join EastEnders as the stunning and unashamedly snobbish Amira Shah who sets to rock the Square with her socialite status from April.

There are bound to be clashes between the spoilt princess and the matriarchal Zainab over her precious son Syed as they both try to be the number one woman in Syed's life.

However, even though she is fun-loving and a rule-breaker, Amira is lonely and insecure and is desperately looking for the love and attention that her father was too busy to give her. Will she be able to charm the right people to be able to fit into life in the Square?

Preeya told us "I cannot wait for this next exciting adventure - to be part of a much loved and respected TV show. My family have watched it for years!"

Executive Producer Diederick Santer, adds “Preeya is a talented and gorgeous actress, and I can’t wait to see what happens when Princess Amira comes on the scene.”

Aw horns will clash here. Daughter in law and mother in law. If she is as strong a character as Zainab it will make interesting to watch.

Bend It Like Beckham actress Preeya Kalidas has described how overwhelming it was to step on the EastEnders set for the first time.

The 29-year-old recently signed to play the snobby socialite girlfriend of the as-yet-unseen Syed Masood, who is to be portrayed by Marc Elliot.

Speaking about her first day, she told BBC Asian Network: "It was weird the first day going onto the Square - it's kind of overwhelming. It's a national treasure, it's the nation's best-loved show so to be part of that is just amazing.

"I'm quite nervous actually because it's a whole different way of working. I went in for rehearsals and had a talk from the director who gave me a whole lowdown on how and what the process is.

"It's such an institution and I watched EastEnders when I was growing up. It's so weird because my family still watch it. I have to admit, I haven't seen it for a while but it's one of those programmes you can dip in and out of and you kind of get into it."

When asked whether she hopes to see more Asian characters in Walford, she added: "Why not?! There's so much to represent within our communities."
