A South Korean grandmother has failed the written exam on her driving test for the 771st time, but is hoping attempt no. 772 will be the charm.

An official in the southwestern city Jeonju, 150 miles south of Seoul, says the 68-year-old woman took her first test in April 2005.

Choi Young-Cheol, a police sergeant who supervised the test, said the aspiring driver had taken the test almost every working day since 2005. She recorded her 771st failure on February 2.

The test-taker was only identified by her family name, Cha. Local media said that she sells food and household items door to door at apartment complexes, carrying the items in a handcart, but wants to get a car for her business.

Choi said that Cha cannot pass the preliminary written section of the test, averaging scores of 30-50 whereas the pass mark is 60 out of 100. He said that she's spent some four million won (US$ 3,000) on test fees - and has told officials she'll keep on trying.

Maybe she should spend more time studying on it and less time wasting her money.

I'd just take the hint and not do it - as if you'd spend that much money on it :|

My dad's cousin knows someone who took 4 attempts on the theory; one mark lower on the Hazard Perception and he would have failed again. I thought that was mad enough!

If she's taking it every day then she can't be studying for it very well, if at all. Now I understand why there's time limits on when you can take another test after failing one here

I guess the people of Jeonju are hiding indoors if they know she is on the road. Wonder what her insurance premiums are going to be like

I don't think the companies are told how many attempts someone takes to pass. Her premiums should only be higher if statistics suggest that those of her age group are at an increased risk of being involved in an accident.
