Diane (Elizabeth Estensen) returns to the village with Annie (Sheila Mercier) who regrets that her arrival coincides with such a sad event. Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) is eager to seek reassurances from Annie that Jack hadn’t forgotten about her and receives peace of mind when Annie begins reminiscing. The family are relieved when Turner (Richard Thorp) agrees to help organise Jack’s funeral. Annie is alarmed to hear that Andy (Kelvin Fletcher) is having doubts over whether to attend but Daz (Luke Tittensor) determines that he’ll be there. Diane urges Ashley (John Middleton) to keep the tone informal as that would suit Jack. Later Diane takes Victoria and Daz to Butlers to search for Andy but there’s no sign. As Diane is also unable to reach Robert Victoria is infuriated with the selfishness shown by her brothers and is bitter towards Diane that nobody was with Jack when he died. Caught up in the emotion Diane retorts that she wishes things could have been different but she still loved Jack. However, Victoria can’t hide her resentment and states that the Sugdens aren’t a proper family anymore. Will everything come together on the day of Jack’s funeral?

Also, Chas (Lucy Pargeter) tells off Paddy (Dominic Brunt) for continuing to ignore Marlon (Mark Charnock). Realising Marlon needs his support, Paddy heads to Tall Trees with some beers. As both begin to get drunk Marlon insists he’s over Donna but Paddy doesn’t believe him. As he’s pouring his heart out there is a knock at the door and Eli (Joseph Gilgun) enters. After admitting that he’s been thrown out of Tug Ghyll and abandoned by the other Dingles, Eli pledges to devote all of his time to supporting Marlon. But will he inadvertently make things worse for his brother?

Jack’s hearse leaves the farm and as the cortege heads through Main Street all of the villagers turn out to pay their respects and follow the procession down to the church. At the funeral, in Diane’s (Elizabeth Estensen) eulogy she reads a letter that Jack had written before he died. The letter describes how proud he was of all of his children and how much he would have loved to spend the last days of his life with them on the farm that has been his life. After an emotional service the mourners head to the graveyard. Diane throws Jack’s cap onto his coffin as prayers are said. Later at the wake in the Woolpack, Val (Charlie Hardwick) brings in a framed photo of Jack to hang on the wall next to Amos and Mr Wilks. Diane is moved by her sister’s gesture and the villagers join in a toast to Jack. That evening Diane tells Annie (Sheila Mercier) that she has let Jack down as she promised to keep his family together yet both Andy and Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) plan on leaving. She opens up to Annie saying she’s still so upset that she and Jack weren’t even together when he passed away and not being mentioned in the letter probably means that Jack intended it to be that way. Annie passes Diane a letter from Jack telling her that he insisted that she didn’t give it to him till later in the day. In the backroom, Val reads Diane Jack’s letter. Jack tells Diane how he wanted to ring but couldn’t face telling her he’d never see her again. He continues that he never stopped loving her and never would. The letter ends with Jack saying she will always be Diane Sugden. Diane sobs as she remembers her dear husband.

Andy (Kelvin Fletcher) is woken by Diane at Butlers in a semi-drunken state. She reminds him that the family need his support and that the day is about paying his father their respects. Andy knows that this isn’t time to argue and bleary eyed heads to the shower. While the hearse leaves Butlers, Robert Sugden (Karl Davies) watches solemnly from a concealed vantage point. With the farm empty Robert heads down to reminisce, but Natasha (Amanda Donohoe) arrives on horseback and questions who he is. He tells her it is his dad’s funeral and asks her not to mention to any of them that she has seen him as they are better off without him. Realising he is sincere Natasha heads off. At the church Diane reads Jack’s letter where he states his belief that he will be leaving the farm in capable hands. Andy is unable to take any more and leaves the church in tears. Later, Robert watches from the bridge as they bury his father. As Andy makes his way to the graveside he sees Robert and shouts his name. Roberts hurries towards his car trying to get away. However, Andy catches up to him and begs Robert to stay telling him that he can’t be head of the family and that Robert should run the farm as it’s his rightful place. Robert just replies that he doesn’t belong in Emmerdale anymore and drives away. At Butler’s Annie visits Andy and reminds him that Jack wanted him to take over as head of this family as he had more faith in him than his own flesh and blood. Andy is clearly torn. Later that evening, Andy meets Diane, Daz (Luke Tittensor) and Victoria at Jack’s graveside. He tells them that he will stay on at the farm but he needs their help and Victoria agrees to stay too. The Sugden’s are united as they link hands and walk away from the grave.

Before the funeral Victoria tells Daz that after the funeral she will be moving to Spain to live with Annie. Daz tries to convince her otherwise but can’t tell her the words she needs to hear. Later as the Sugden’s gather in the kitchen of Butler’s, Victoria announces her plan. Before they have chance to question her decision the funeral director knocks on the door as the hearse has arrived. Daz begs Victoria to stay in the village. He gets so close to saying what he really feels and Victoria is torn whether to stay or go.

Debbie (Charley Webb) is glum when her solicitor advises her to plead guilty and opt for a charge of manslaughter rather than running the gauntlet of a murder trial. Back in the village Zak (Steve Halliwell) is furious to see what he assumes is a reporter snooping around Tug Ghyll. The Dingles are shocked to learn that he is in fact Debbie’s new solicitor. Zak queries how Debbie can afford such an expensive brief and Hawkins replies that the costs have been covered by his son – Cain. A stunned Zak and Lisa (Jane Cox) usher Hawkins back to the homestead to fill them in on Cain’s situation but he is short of answers. They are disappointed, but Hawkins hints that Cain will tell them himself very soon. Buoyed by the thought of Cain’s return Lisa heads to the prison and Debbie’s hope is renewed when she hears that Cain plans to support her. However, Andy (Kelvin Fletcher) is furious to hear that Cain is going to be living under the same roof as his daughter and discreetly calls the police. A squad of police cars turn up to search the Dingles and Zak immediately suspects Andy’s involvement. Is Cain walking into a trap?

Meanwhile, Diane (Elizabeth Estensen) is proud of Andy’s decision to stay but isn’t looking forward to telling Mick (Tony Haygarth) that he can’t have the farm. Daz (Luke Tittensor) patches up his differences with Andy and offers his help with the farm and the family. Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) volunteers her services to help around the farmhouse but Diane is slightly upset to lose her company from the Woolpack. Elsewhere, Lee (Lewis Linford) is given the job of gamekeeper at Home Farm but is guilty knowing he can’t help an excited Mick with Butlers. Later, Diane tells an understanding Natasha (Amanda Donohoe) about Andy’s decision, but Mick is furious and subsequently hurt to find out about Lee’s new job. Diane arrives home after a hard day and breaks down in Rodney’s (Patrick Mower) arms as the emotion of the week bears down on her.

Thursday, 12 February 2009, 7:00PM - 7:30PM

The Dingles are alarmed to hear that Cain was arrested at the port. Sure it is Andy’s (Kelvin Fletcher) doing Zak (Steve Halliwell) and Shadrach (Andy Devine) head to Butlers but Andy insists he’ll do whatever it takes to protect Sarah. Zak slams him against a wall and Shadrach goads him for being afraid of Cain. Before the situation escalates Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) steps between them. Zak tells Andy he has blown his chances of having any access to Sarah. Andy wants to resume the fight but Diane (Elizabeth Estensen) insists she will smooth the waters. Diane tries to speak with Lisa (Jane Cox) but she stands firm and Diane goes home preparing herself for all out war. How far will the Sugdens go to get Sarah back?

Elsewhere, Marlon’s impressed by Eli’s determination to help Debbie, and Ashley (John Middleton) and Laurel (Charlotte) intensify their search for Jasmine. Ashley calls Sandy (Freddie Jones) who surprises his son by revealing he’s now in Scotland. Ashley asks is he’s heard from Jasmine and Sandy is worried when he suspects something is wrong. After Ashley fills him in Sandy states that if she’s guilty if might be better for her to have run. He offers to return to the village but Ashley tells him to stay put. Meanwhile at the prison, Debbie (Charley Webb) has been filled in about Cain’s arrest – she’s ready to give up, but Hawkins demands she doesn’t plead guilty to anything. Having broken into her house, he hands her her phone and says Cain will be in touch. Noticing a message, Debbie returns the call and gets Jasmine (Jenna-Louise Coleman). Debbie insists that Jasmine should stay where she is and Jasmine is overwhelmed by Debbie’s sacrifice. As the girls swear their love, Debbie hears Sandy in the background. Can Sandy keep Jasmine hidden?

Meanwhile, Mick (Tony Haygarth) apologises to Diane for his outburst but refuses her offer to join the Woolpack staff as a pot man. Mick soon regrets turning down the job and returns to give another apology. Diane explains it wasn’t a charitable offer and needs the help so she can provide more support at the farm. Mick changes his mind and accepts the job. Lee (Lewis Linford) is pleased to see his granddad happier and feels better about accepting the Home Farm job.

Friday, 13 February 2009, 7:00PM - 7:30PM

Eli (Joseph Gilgun) tells the police he wants to change his statement to say that he saw Jasmine murder Shane and continues to drop the bombshell that Jasmine and Debbie (Charley Webb) were lovers. The Dingles are surprised when Natasha (Amanda Donohoe) turns up at court to support Debbie. At the preliminary hearing, with the last minute evidence, Debbie’s charge is upped to murder. The prosecution, on hearing of Debbie’s relationship with Jasmine, are claiming she killed Shane out of jealousy. Eli meanwhile has been kept at the police station and tells Henshall (Michael McKell) that he’s willing to confess to the murder himself if it leads to Debbie’s release. However, he’s quickly told to go home. Eli’s stunned to hear the news and the other Dingles begin to prepare for the worst.

Also, Paddy (Dominic Brunt) is in a sour mood ahead of Valentine’s Day and snubs any attempts by his neighbours to talk about it. Gennie (Sian Reese-Williams) buys Paddy a card to cheer him up and invites him and Chas (Lucy Pargeter) for a drink so she can sneakily slip it to him. Gennie plants the Valentines card in Paddy’s pocket but is mortified when he assumes it’s a joke and storms out, hurt that his friends find his pitiful love life amusing. Can Paddy resurrect his dismal love life?

Elsewhere, Andy (Kelvin Fletcher) is in a buoyant mood when Diane (Elizabeth Estensen) looks into the possibility of legal help to win his daughter back. Later, Diane threatens Lisa (Jane Cox) that Andy will have to get a solicitor if they won’t give him access to Sarah. Zak (Steve Halliwell) warns Diane that now isn’t the best time but she’s adamant that the situation gets sorted. Diane apologises for Andy’s involvement with Cain, but states that he needs Sarah if he is to get back on his feet. The Dingles aren’t receptive so Diane changes tack and threatens them with a legal battle which they would most certainly lose with Debbie in prison. Sure they have enough legal problems the Dingles agree to let him have her temporarily. Have the Sugdens won the battle or the war?

In the storyline Diane gets a phone call from Annie, Jack's mum to tell her that he had a heart attack and passed away. In real life he died of an illness that was never disclosed but he was off sick for several months before he died.
