A US woman has given birth to eight babies, becoming just the second person recorded in the US to have delivered a set of living octuplets.

The six boys and two girls, who were nine weeks premature, were delivered by caesarean section in the hospital in Los Angeles, California.

The babies, who weighed in at between 1.8lbs (820g) and 3.4lbs each, are all said to be doing well.

They were screaming and kicking around very vigorously, a doctor said.

The mother, whose identity has not been revealed, has asked that limited information be released about the births.

A hospital spokeswoman described the deliveries, which took place in the space of five minutes, as "truly amazing".

Three of the babies needed help breathing, but all were otherwise doing well, a doctor said.

The babies will be in incubators for at least six weeks and the mother is planning to breast feed them all, the hospital officials said.

The world's first live-born set of octuplets were delivered in Houston, Texas, in 1998. One baby died about a week later - but the surviving children celebrated their 10th birthday in December.

Their Nigerian-born mother, Nkem Chukwu, said the new parents had much to look forward to, the Associated Press agency reported.

"Just enjoy it. It's a blessing, truly a blessing," Mrs Chukwu was quoted as saying. "We'll keep praying for them."

Good luck to her, breastfeeding 8 babies

Especially if they aren't identical and have individual placentas.

I wouldn't want to be her paying for the medical bills. C-section and care for eight babies for at least six weeks is going to run to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

All eight babies born in what is believed to be only the second case of octuplets surviving more than a few hours are stable and continue to do well, doctors have said.
The six boys and two girls were delivered on Monday at the Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Centre in Los Angeles.
Initially two of the newborns were put on ventilators. But one of the doctors involved confirmed that they were now all breathing on their own.
Dr Mandhir Gupta said the eight babies "are doing actually very, very well". He added: "Only three babies need some sort of oxygen through the nose right now but they are breathing on their own."
The octuplets were born nine weeks premature to a mother who has not been named. They weighed between 1lb 8oz and 3lb 4oz and were delivered by Caesarean section within five minutes.
Doctors and the babies' parents had been expecting seven babies, with the eighth coming as a surprise. All of the babies - dubbed with the letters A to H - are expected to remain in hospital for at least two months.
The babies' mother checked into the hospital during her 23rd week of pregnancy, giving birth seven weeks later. Hospital officials have not said if she was on fertility drugs.
Records show that the world's first live octuplets were born in March 1967 in Mexico City, but all died within 14 hours of the birth. In 1998, octuplets were born to a mother in Houston, Texas. The smallest died a week after the birth. But the seven other siblings survived and turned age 10 in December.
Their Nigerian-born parents, Nkem Chukwu and Iyke Louis Udobi, gave their best wishes to the parents involved in the latest multiple birth.
"It's a blessing, truly a blessing. We'll keep praying for them," said Nkem Chukwu.

One day after a California woman gave birth to octuplets, all eight babies are breathing on their own.
The woman, who astonished a 46-member medical team at a suburban Los Angeles hospital by delivering eight babies when ultrasound images had shown seven, was also said to be doing well.
The six boys and two girls, born nine weeks prematurely, are only the second set of octuplets known to have survived birth in the US.
"The first test is the breathing test and ... they are breathing on their own," Dr Mandhir Gupta said. "They still need some support with oxygen but only through the nose so most of the work of breathing is done by themselves."
A second test for the newborns is feeding. The staff at Kaiser Permanente Medical Centre in Bellflower planned to begin that process with four of the babies.
The mother, whose name has been withheld by the hospital at her request, intended to breast feed all of her babies. But she has not yet been able to hold them because they were still in incubators in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, Dr Gupta said.
The hospital has declined to say whether the woman became pregnant through fertility treatments, which can raise the likelihood of multiple births.
The last octuplets known to have survived birth in the United States, six girls and two boys, were born in Houston in 1998. One of the babies, a girl, died one week later.

The California woman who astonished doctors earlier this week by giving birth to octuplets at a suburban Los Angeles hospital already has six other children, CBS News reported on Thursday.

The woman delivered six boys and two girls prematurely by Caesarean section on Monday, surprising doctors who had seen only seven babies in ultrasound images.

Officials at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in the Los Angeles suburb of Bellflower have declined to identify the mother or reveal if she received fertility treatments, which can increase the likelihood of multiple births.

There are no known cases of naturally conceived octuplets.

A Kaiser Permanente spokeswoman declined to comment on the CBS report but said that all eight babies were still in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit and doing well.

Five of the babies were feeding and six were breathing on their own, hospital spokeswoman Nancy Tovar-Huxen said. She said doctors had not yet determined when they could go home.

In reporting on "The Early Show" that the mother already has six other children, a CBS reporter who visited the woman's Los Angeles-area home cited two unnamed acquaintances.

One of those acquaintances said that the mother lived with her parents and that two of her other children were twins.

The birth of the octuplets already has raised eyebrows, with fertility and reproductive experts saying that such high-risk pregnancies should be avoided.

"When we see something like this in the general fertility world, it gives us the heebie-jeebies," Michael Tucker, an Atlanta-based clinical embryologist and leading researcher in fertility treatments, told the Los Angeles Times.

"If a medical practitioner had anything to do with it, there's some degree of inappropriate medical therapy there," the Times quoted him as saying.

How is she going to manage with 14 children? Having already got six children, to have another eight at once seems irresponsible to me. I agree completely with what the embryologist says.

Emmie
29-01-2009, 23:59
You have to manage really, i the oldest of 7 and people think thats impossible to manage but i don't think its any different, aslong as u have tight rules and routine, u can manage anything x

'there is no know case of naturally occurring octruplets'

Why on earth would anyone who already has 6 children undergo fertility treatment - and why would the medical profession allow it.

This is a ridiculous waste of money and medical resources; not to mention the difficulties with having premature children, the cost of raising such a large family and the impossibility of giving each child the parental attention they deserve.

All that said I hope for the sake of 14 wee souls who didn't ask to be born that they manage and thrive.

There's no wonder the mother doesn't want to be named.

There are thousands of women in the US who can't conceive and are on long waiting lists yet doctors are giving treatment to a woman with six children already.

No mention of the father. Wonder how she funded all this and how she's going to raise 14 children.

A Californian woman who gave birth to octuplets earlier this week already has six children, US media have reported.

The eight babies were delivered nine weeks early by Caesarean section in a hospital near Los Angeles on Monday.

The mother has not been named, but US media are quoting family members as saying she already has six other children, including twins.

Doctors say the eight babies are making good progress and are expected to stay in hospital for several more weeks.

Although the babies' mother asked doctors to keep her details confidential, a family acquaintance gave clues to her identity to the American CBS channel.
Shortly afterwards, media camped outside a house in Whittier, near Los Angeles.

The Associated Press news agency spoke to a man identified as the babies' grandfather, who was with two children. The children said they were excited to have eight new siblings, AP reported.

The Los Angeles Times later carried an interview with a woman identified as the babies' grandmother, who said her daughter already had six young children and never expected the fertility treatment she had received would result in eight more babies.

She said that doctors had given her daughter the option of reducing the number of embryos, but she had declined.

"What do you suggest she should have done? She refused to have them killed. That is a very painful thing," she said.

She added that her daughter expected a big challenge raising 14 children. The woman's husband is expected to return to Iraq where he works as a contractor, the LA Times reported.

Officials at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, near Los Angeles, said the woman was already 12 weeks pregnant when she came to them. Despite media questioning, the hospital has declined to say whether the mother became pregnant through fertility treatments.

A mother of six who recently added to her large family by having octuplets has said she got pregnant via IVF because she was lonely as a child.

In excerpts of an interview to be aired next week, Nadya Suleman, 33, told how she had always wanted a "huge family".

Ms Suleman is single and lives with her mother Angela who has recently told of her frustration at her daughter's preoccupation with having children, calling her "a little misguided".

Asked by NBC's Ann Curry how an only child ended up with 14 children of her own, Suleman said: "That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family."

Ms Suleman said she tried for seven years to get pregnant before successfully conceiving through IVF.

"From that facility, it was successful. And then I just kept going in," she said.

Ms Suleman gave birth to six boys and two girls on January 26 - the second known set of US octuplets to survive birth.

Her six other children range in age from two to seven.

In the video, which was shown as part of an interview with NBC's Today show host Ann Curry, Miss Suleman introduced the eight babies - who turned two weeks old on Monday - one by one. She also revealed their names, which are largely Biblical in origin, and said her children, who weighed between 1.5 and 3.3 lbs when they were born nine weeks premature, were confounding doctor's expectations by doing remarkably well.

The footage, shot in the neonatal intensive care unit of the Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Centre showed Miss Suleman, 33, address each of the tiny infants in their incubators.

"Hi, Maliah, your eyes are open," she said to the first child. "This is Noah and he's doing well. He's blond, the only one with blond hair."

Describing son Johan, the smallest of the octuplets, as "the troublemaker", she then introduced baby Isaiah – or "baby C" - who she said was getting bigger and "starting to recognise my voice". Speaking to "angel" daughter Nariah, she said: "I wish I could be here all day long".

Jeremiah is "on lights for jaundice", Miss Suleman went on, before caressing McCai and apologising to Josiah for the brief nature of her visit. "I wish I could stay all day long, but I can't," she said. Your brothers and sisters at home want to see you ... I can't wait until they're all together. We are not a whole family."

The babies are expected to remain in hospital for several weeks.

They look gorgeous, I hope they all make it

Octo Mom Nadya Suleman has confirmed to Usmagazine.com she has fired the free nursing staff provided to her by the non-profit charity organization Angels In Waiting.

"Yes, it's true. I released AIW," Suleman said in a statement to Us. "It was really bad. That's all I can say. I can't confirm, why, in particular. I will be releasing the details soon."

Her spokesman accused the non-profit charity group -- which announced their plans to assist Suleman in raising her 14 children during a March 14 taping of Dr. Phil -- of spying on her and reporting her to child welfare officials.

Suleman had several confrontations with the nurses, her attorney Jeff Czech said. Relations worsened Sunday when Suleman came to believe that Angels in Waiting founder Linda West-Conforti was allegedly filing a report against her with child welfare officials.

Said Czech, “Nadya felt that she was being judged wrongfully, and she didn't need it."

Suleman -- who has custody of four infants so far -- says she'll rely on her own nannies -- whom she had planned to hire regardless of Angels in Waiting's assistance -- to care for the babies instead.

Attorney Gloria Allred who represents Angels in Waiting, told Usmagazine.com via e-mail Monday: "We have no comment at this time. We will respond tomorrow afternoon with the true facts."

According to RadarOnline.com, which first broke the story RadarOnline.com, members of Angels in Waiting are scheduled to tape an episode of Dr. Phil Tuesday. Suleman also hopes to appear on the show to defend herself.

Suleman turned down an earlier offer from Angels in Waiting because they wouldn't let her film a reality show, Allred said.

Nadya Suleman is reportedly lining up her own reality show.

The octuplet mum claims to have landed a TV deal in the UK, which will follow the lives of their children.

"Yes, it is official," Suleman said of the deal. "What I'm doing with this TV show is basically creating documentaries about the lives of my children.

"It's going to be an ongoing thing, and it will follow them from now until they are 18."

She added: "It's being done by Eyeworks - they're in the UK. It will air in the UK and then we'll see if the US is interested."

An Eyeworks spokesperson confirmed that a deal was being discussed, saying: "At this time we are in active negotiations with Nadya and her attorney for an unscripted format following the life of Nadya and her children."

"Nadya's story is a very unique and exciting one that needs to be told in the right manner...We are confident that we are the right party to tell their story around the world."

Why would viewers in the UK be more interested in her story than in the US, where she is from? I hope everything goes well for them but I am not interested in watching her kids grow up, to be honest.

Nadya Suleman has signed a deal to star in a new reality series, her lawyer has said.

It was recently rumoured that the octuplet mum was to land her own show following the lives of her children. It has now been confirmed that the series will be produced by 3Ball Productions.

"They came up with this idea, presented [it] to her and she liked it because she'll get to use a camera and do some of the filming herself," Suleman's attorney Jeff Czech told The AP. "It'll be less intrusive than a reality TV type of programme."

Suleman, 33, was already a mother-of-six when she gave birth to eight babies at a hospital near Los Angeles on January 26.

According to the network, Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage will feature "an intimate look inside Suleman's life" and allow "viewers to witness the emotional struggles, physical complications and financial burdens of this single mother of 14".

The statement added: "From the day the octuplets were born, cameras had unprecedented access to every area of Suleman’s life.

"For more than seven months, cameras documented Suleman, capturing incredible footage, including the private moments and reactions of Suleman’s family, as well as Suleman's own feelings, doubts and fears."

Nadya Suleman has claimed that she "screwed up" her life and the lives of her children by choosing to give birth to eight babies.

The mother-of-fourteen, dubbed 'Octomom' by the press after giving birth in January, admitted that she never thought about the future when she became pregnant following IVF treatment.

"I screwed myself, I screwed up my life, I screwed up my kids' lives... What was I thinking?" she says in an upcoming documentary for Fox News.

"What the heck am I going to do? I have to put on this strong face and I have to pretend like I don't regret it. I cannot regret it now because I have them and they are here, but what was I thinking?"

The documentary footage shows the 33-year-old attempting to feed the eight screaming babies at her home in California.

Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage will air tonight.

A national organization that promotes ethical standards in reproductive medicine tells PEOPLE it has ejected the Beverly Hills fertility doctor who treated Octomom Nadya Suleman.

The American Society of Reproductive Medicine had a hearing over the summer in which Dr. Michael Kamrava presented a defense, and the organization notified Kamrava a few weeks ago he was being expelled, ASRM spokesman Sean Tipton tells PEOPLE.

"This is not an action we take lightly, nor do we take it often," Tipton says, adding that Kamrava was expelled for "a pattern of failing to uphold our standards of membership."

Tipton would not get into the specifics of what Kamrava did wrong. But he did confirm that the group's investigation was sparked by media coverage of the octuplets born earlier this year in Southern California after Suleman was treated by Kamrava.

Tipton says it's been widely reported that Suleman, a welfare mom who already had six kids, claims she was implanted with six embryos, two of which split during gestation. Tipton says that, in addition to revoking Kamrava's membership, the organization has released revised guidelines clarifying its position on embryo transfers. For women under 35, like Suleman, only a single transfer of an embryo is appropriate. If the doctor feels there are special circumstances, he or she can consider implanting a second embryo, Tipton says.

Kamrava did not return a call seeking comment. He has repeatedly declined to comment to the media about the case.

The ASRM is an advocacy group – which is not the same as a board that certifies specialists or a state medical board. California's medical board has no record of disciplinary action against Kamrava, although the board indicated earlier this year that it was investigating Suleman's fertility treatments.
