Coldplay and Duffy have bagged four nominations apiece for this year's Brit Awards.

Both acts were shortlisted for the British Single and British Album prizes, with Coldplay also receiving nominations for British Group and British Live Act.

Duffy, meanwhile, picked up further nominations in the British Female and British Breakthrough Act categories.

Adele, Scouting For Girls and Elbow have each been nominated for three awards, while Ting Tings and Estelle have been shortlisted for two.

Girls Aloud also received a pair of nominations - for British Group and British Single - with Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke and the X Factor finalists among the competition in the British Single category.

In the international categories, five acts picked up a pair of nominations: Kings of Leon, The Killers, AC/DC, MGMT and Fleet Foxes.

Jay-Z and Kanye West will square off for the International Male gong, while Pink, Beyoncé and Katy Perry will compete for the International Female trophy.

Pet Shop Boys will take home the Outstanding Contribution to Music prize at this year's Brit Awards, to be held at London's Earls Court on February 18.

Girls Aloud have vowed to battle their male competitors in the race for the best group prize at this year's Brit Awards.

The girl group are the only female act up for the award, fighting off competition from Coldplay, Take That, Radiohead and Elbow.

"We were in the same category last year and the only girls then too, so we’re like, ‘Come on the girls’," Cheryl Cole told the Daily Star.

"It’s brilliant and surreal being up for the same award."

The band's number one 'The Promise' has also been nominated for best single, which will be decided on the night by a live telephone vote.

The awards, which will be co-presented by Kylie Minogue, James Corden and Mathew Horne, will take place on February 18.

William Hill, Ladbrokes and Paddy Power have suspended betting on the Brit Awards because of fears that the winners list has been leaked.

The bookmakers made the decision after a number of bets of around £50 were placed at William Hill branches on Paul Weller to win the award for best British solo male artist.

A Brits spokesperson said: "Every precaution is taken to keep results under lock and key."

Weller's odds were consequently cut from 5/1 to 1/5 favourite, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Weller is up against James Morrison, The Streets, Will Young and former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown.

Punters can still place bets on the best single category, which is voted for by the public.

Last month, Weller announced a number of summer concerts to take place in forests across the UK in support of his 22 Dreams LP.

Coldplay would be "hurt" if they are defeated in their nominated categories at this year's Brit Awards, say reports.

According to The Sun, rumours have emerged which suggest that the band may leave this year's ceremony empty-handed.

A Brits source said: "Coldplay are buzzing about the awards. They love being a part of the biggest night in British music and have been looking forward to it.

"Leaving with nothing would really hurt the band. After the year they have had it would be a real slap in the face to see someone else walk off with the awards."

Earlier this month, Coldplay picked up three Grammy Awards, while their fourth album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends was recently revealed as the best selling LP in the world during 2008.

Lady GaGa's performance at this year's Brit Awards will be the sexiest performance ever seen at the ceremony, it has been claimed.

The singer will duet with the Pet Shop Boys, who are due to pick up the Outstanding Contribution award at the event.

According to The Sun, the organisers want a performer who will "really shock".

An insider said: "It is going to be the raunchiest show the Brits has ever seen. GaGa is the girl. She will be perfect. Don't expect many clothes."

The theme for this year's ceremony will reportedly be based on Glastonbury, with the stage at Earls Court being shaped like the festival's Pyramid Stage and filled with farm-related props.

Last week, Gabriella Cilmi said that Lady GaGa "needs to put some clothes on", adding that the 'Just Dance' singer will "catch something" if she continues to walk around in her underwear.

Duffy was the big winner at this year's Brit Awards, taking home a trio of trophies.

The Welsh singer pipped Adele to the British Female and British Breakthrough Act prizes, while also taking home the prestigious British Album award for Rockferry.

Meanwhile, Girls Aloud won the first Brit of their career, collecting the British Single gong for 'The Promise'.

Elbow vanquished competition from Coldplay and Take That to win the British Group trophy, while Paul Weller won the award for British Male.

In the international categories, Kings of Leon picked up a pair of gongs, while Kanye West and Katy Perry also collected prizes.

The Outstanding Contribution to Music gong was awarded to Pet Shop Boys, who ended the evening with a greatest hits medley that featured appearances from Lady GaGa and Brandon Flowers.

ROCK legend BONO last night wowed the Brit Awards — and joked that his ambition is to be the sixth member of Best British Single winners GIRLS ALOUD.
Bono, 48, front man with Irish supergroup U2, told The Sun of his secret dream before rehearsals.

They performed a raunchy version of the song live, wearing sequined burlesque costumes and surrounded by male dancers in white top hats and tails.

The girls — CHERYL COLE, 25, NADINE COYLE, 23, SARAH HARDING, 27, NICOLA ROBERTS, 23, and KIMBERLEY WALSH, 27 — appeared in striking wedding dresses to receive the award from comedian ALAN CARR.

When Bono, who was wearing EYELINER, said he wanted “to be in Girls Aloud”, U2 bass player ADAM CLAYTON quipped: “Which one?”

Bono said: “Seriously, I think Girls Aloud are at the cutting edge of pop music.

“They are a great band and deserve to be centre stage.

“They have everything a pop band should have — songs, the look, it’s all there.”

U2 opened the Brits with a storming performance of their latest single Get On Your Boots.

The veteran band have flogged 140 million albums worldwide — but Bono was keen to point out that they still feel able to compete with younger bands.

He added: “We see ourselves as contemporaries of bands like COLDPLAY, KINGS OF LEON, INTERPOL — and even Girls Aloud.

“We have been doing this a long time but I still get the same nerves about releasing an album as I did in the early days.

“The difference now is for new bands.

“They are under so much pressure to release their material for free.

“It’s different for us, we have a loyal fan base who buy our records.

“We can also make money from touring, thanks again to our fans, who go out and buy tickets.

“The danger in giving music away free is for writers.

“Where would Cole Porter be now?

“If you have to give away your work for free and you can’t play live, where do you earn the money?”

He added: “It’s an interesting time for music.

“Acts from this side of the pond are doing incredibly well.

“Tonight is a great example.”

Cheryl Cole has claimed that Girls Aloud's win at last night's Brit Awards has dispelled rumours that the group has split up.

The singer and X Factor judge described the band's best single victory for 'The Promise' as "a bit surreal".

Girls Aloud beat off competition from Adele, Alexandra Burke, Coldplay and others to win the award that was chosen by the public.

Regarding rumours of a possible break-up, Cole said: "We have just won a Brit voted for by the public, and us being here shuts that question up."

Reports emerged that bandmate Kimberly Walsh needed an emergency massage after hurting her foot during a closed-set rehearsal, but she returned for a performance of the group's winning song.

Before the event, Rochelle Wiseman of rival girl group The Saturdays told DS that she hoped Girls Aloud would win the best single prize.

How can they be rumoured to split when they have agreed another 3 albums anyway?

Members of Kings of Leon had to be separated after coming to blows backstage at the Brit Awards ceremony, it has been claimed.

The band's singer Caleb Followill is said to have been involved in a physical fight with his cousin and lead guitarist Matthew Followill, The Sun reports.

A source said: "[Matthew] hasn't been feeling as much a part of things, especially at big events like the Brits.

"Caleb was winding him up all night, unintentionally, and all of a sudden something snapped and they just went for each other.

“It was like a proper old-fashioned bar room brawl. They weren't messing about, there were some serious punches being thrown."

The source added that Matthew had struggled to deal with the attention his bandmates receive from fans.

Kings of Leon won the Brit awards for best international band and best international album for their fourth LP Only By The Night.

A bookmaker has suggested that it may not take bets on the Brit Awards in the future because of fears that the winners' names are known in advance.

Earlier this week, Tote, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power and others stopped taking bets on Paul Weller winning the best British male solo artist award after a flurry of bets were placed on him with William Hill.

A spokesman for the bookmaker told The Sun: "It was our music department's worst night for years.

"It's highly unlikely we'll be betting on the Brits again as there is no doubt the results are circulating up to a week before."

He added that the pre-recorded interview for Weller suggested that some individuals had been tipped off about the award.

When the story emerged, a spokesperson for the Brits claimed that "every precaution" was taken to keep the results secret.

Katy Perry has compared winning her Brit Award to being given a knighthood.
The singer picked up the best international female gong at the ceremony and admitted that she was overwhelmed.
"Oh my gawd. I'm SO happy. I've won a BRIT. That's like being knighted practically! Maybe even better. Thank you. Didn't expect THAT!" she wrote on her blog.
Shortly after collecting the award, the 'Hot 'N' Cold' (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/a133632/katy-perry-hot-n-cold.html) star was forced to leave the event when she was violently sick (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/showbiz/a147204/perry-pukes-backstage-at-brit-awards.html) backstage.
Perry added that she was still suffering from a temperature: "I can't tell you how bad I feel right now. Last night I was sweatin it out, but yeah, lets just say this kitty does not look so pretty right now.
"I have the doctor on speed dial if the fever gets over 101/102. I'm stuck in bed for the next couple of days as I should be. Im upset because Top Shop is right around the corner and I can't move outta my sweat bed. F-ing flu."
The singer is scheduled to play a trio of live shows in London and Manchester kicking off on February 24.

I'm not even going to comment on that

Pity Coldplay didn't get any Brits. At least they got some Grammys though.
