THE BBC scooped the world yesterday as its news channel breathlessly reported the theft of... a HAMSTER.
Amazingly it was trumpeted as “breaking news” — even though the pet was nicked five days ago.
Bulletins on the turmoil in Gaza and a third Heathrow runway gave way to a shock-horror news ticker along the bottom of the screen screaming: HAMSTER THEFT.
The banner added sensationally: “Pet stolen from flat in Stourport-on-Severn”. Veteran newscasters Louise Minchin and Tim Wilcox struggled to keep straight faces as they were forced to read out the earth-shattering details.
Lassie the hamster was nicked — complete with cage — from its Worcestershire home. Burglars also grabbed a games console, a TV... and half a bottle of MILK.
Cops in West Mercia were searching for the pet, which has ginger and white markings and a permanently closed left eye.
Last night the force scoffed: “We are surprised this has become breaking news.
“We are currently dealing with the post office shooting in Fairfield so this isn’t top of our list of priority cases.”
The BBC News Channel, formerly called BBC 24, defended its scoop as a “lighter item” we “often do just before the weather.” It claimed: “Louise Minchin was clearly joking when she referred to it as ‘breaking news’.”
