TORN Tanya finds herself back in Max’s arms on EastEnders – thinking: ‘Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?’

Tanya (Jo Joyner) finds her hubby (Jake Wood) bloodied and bruised after his brother Jack, also her lover, carried out a revenge attack on him over Max’s plot to plant a gun on him.

When Max tells Tanya Jack (Scott Maslen) attacked him, a moment of weakness finds her back in his arms.

But her sympathy doesn’t last long.

She quickly realises she’s better off alone, whispers “goodbye Max” – and leaves him a crumpled heap.

Tanya Branning - played by Jo Joyner - has had a tough few months. She endured a short stint in prison after 'confessing' that she attempted to murder her husband Max (Jake Wood). However, it soon transpired that the doting mother was protecting her eldest daughter Lauren (Madeline Duggan) from a full-scale investigation. Next week, a seemingly-reformed Tanya returns to the Square following Lauren's revelation to Max that it was she who tried to kill him - and she's not best pleased to learn that Lauren's put herself into foster care. So what's in store for Tanya's homecoming? And will she banish the men from her life once and for all? We gave Jo Joyner a call to find out.

When Tanya told Max that'd she tried to kill him before and she'd do it again when she got out of prison, do you think she meant it?
"No, she didn't mean it. I think what was happening at that point in her head was that she felt, quite rightly, that Max was thinking 'there's no way you've done this, Tanya'. She genuinely wanted to throw Max off the scent of the real culprit. She wanted to protect Lauren, and Tanya was trying to make out that she wasn't in her right mind. I think it was just Tanya's way of keeping Max focused on her."

What does she do when she returns?
"As she's about to be let out, she can't wait because she's going to see her kids again. She's been waiting for this moment for so long. Obviously she's desperately worried about Lauren, too. But then she hears from the solicitor that Lauren's not even at home. She's absolutely livid because as far as she's concerned, Max and Jane have totally let her down. She also thinks that it must be Max's fault that Lauren didn't want to stay around. She walks into the house and is beside herself with joy to see Abi and Oscar. She gives them all a big hug can't even look at Jane and Max. As soon as Abi's out of the room, Tanya turns around and slaps Max and tells him and Jane to get out of the house. It's quite brisk actually and I really like the way they did it."

Tanya doesn't do betrayal very well, does she?
"No, she should be used to it by now though, shouldn't she? She's a little bit calmer this time, though, now that she's been inside. Despite all the rows she has with Max and Jane, she realises by the end of the week that she's going about it all the wrong way and she can't continue going about it all in the whirlwind that she is. She realises that she's got to take some responsibility for herself."

She's returned as a reformed woman, hasn't she? Back with a vengeance?
"No, she hasn't. She's had time in prison to think all that through, but the spanner in the works is that Lauren's not there when she gets home. She's a whirlwind for the first week, but after that, she calms down a little. Being in prison was the longest amount of time that she's spent on her own since she was 17 and had Lauren! If she's changed at all, she's come out with a bit more bloody sense and independence!"

What happens initially when she tries to get Lauren back from social services?
"Tanya can't believe it when she finds out that it's actually Lauren's decision not to be at home. That's the point when she realises she has to take some responsibility and control back of her life. During the rows that Tanya and Max have, Max points out that it's not all his fault. It all starts hitting home for Tanya by the end of the week."

When she returns to the Square, Tanya's only concern is her children. Does she think that she's let them down?
"Yeah definitely. If you think about it, Tanya hasn't been on her own since last Christmas. She immediately went off with Sean, then she went off with Jack. Until she went to prison, she'd not had a second to sit on her own and think about all that's happened in her life."

Do Tanya and Jane resolve their differences?
"Tanya feels very angry and let down by Jane because she thought her best friend would look after her kids. Tanya genuinely goes to make up with Jane and during the conversation, she asks Jane to get Lauren's mobile number from Peter and in the middle of that, Jane wonders if that's the only reason Tanya apologised to her. I don't actually think it was the real reason. That's not the way we played it anyway. Eventually, they do make up and I think they really do need each other."

She finally gets in touch with Lauren, though, doesn't she?
"It all comes about when Tanya gets the number from Jane. Tanya leaves several messages for Lauren to call her back. Some of them are really upset messages, some of them are begging messages and some of them are heartfelt ones. Tanya's sitting in the pub waiting for Lauren to call back and Max is there in the background, too. Jane's telling Tanya not to will it to happen and at that point, Max and Tanya start rowing again because Tanya's worried that Max will stick his oar in and mess everything up even more. During the argument, the phone goes and it's Lauren who's annoyed that Tanya's got her mobile number."

How do Tanya and Lauren end up meeting again?
"Tanya calls Lauren again and she finally agrees to meet. It's not the resolve Tanya hopes for, but Tanya does shut up and listen for once. Lauren just explains that she wants some time away from it all and Tanya has to accept that."

Jo Joyner talks Jane, Jack and Max

She's baaaack. Yep, Jo Joyner fans will be pleased to note that Tanya Branning returns to our screens next week when she's released from prison, courtesy of her daughter Lauren's (Madeline Duggan) confession to her father Max's (Jake Wood) attempted murder. And now it looks like the jailbird's about to regain control of her life once and for all - by ridding the men from her life and concentrating on the kids.

Meanwhile, if you're interested in reading about Tanya's friendship with Jane (Laurie Brett), her relationship with Jack (Scott Maslen) and that lingering pre-hit-and-run kiss with Max (Jake Wood), then read on...

Does Tanya plan to use Bradley as a pawn in her hatred of Max?
"No, I don't think so. Bradley won't be in the house for long, either! There's a big turnaround for Tanya and a big clean up for her that's well overdue."

Tanya's friendship with Jane is always nice to watch, isn't it?
"I absolutely love Jane and Tanya's friendship. There's a lot more fun and good times to come from that one - I love the way they write for them, too. It's a very real friendship, too. I think every woman has a close friend that they can talk to and rely on. I make a point of never breaking down or crying unless Tanya's on her own or with Jane."

Did Tanya ever love Jack or did she embark on that relationship to annoy Max?
"I think she did love him, but just not in the same way. Tanya loved him in a very homely, warm and convenient way. She didn't love him in a mad, passionate, 'I can't help myself' way that she does Max."

Do you think Tanya has forgotten her kiss with Max just before the accident?
"No. I don't think she'll forget that. Neither of them will. It's one of those things. That'll always be lingering between them."

Have you enjoyed your recent time off?
"It was bliss! I'd been full-on since last Christmas [2007], so I just felt I needed a little time off."

EastEnders star Jo Joyner has strongly hinted that a resolve could be on the cards for Max and Tanya.

Speaking to DS on the red carpet at this year's British Soap Awards, Joyner - who plays unlucky in love Tanya Branning - said: "So many people tell me not to, but there's a really big chance that they will."

She added: "I think she's trying very hard to make it hard for him... and herself consequentially. She wants to be fought for."

EastEnders star Jo Joyner has hinted that the Branning family will be taking centre stage in this year's Christmas episodes.

The actress, who plays mum-of-three Tanya, revealed that plans are already afoot for the clan to have another huge festive storyline.

Joyner told Inside Soap: "It's going to be a very busy time for Tanya and her family.

"We're currently filming some heart-rending scenes with her mother Cora, and I've heard Christmas is going to be a whopper for the Brannings. You'd better watch this space!"

A busy Christmas for the Brannings could tie in with Tanya's temporary exit as Joyner is taking a break from the BBC show in 2013.

In the meantime, viewers will see Tanya face a big decision next week as Max asks her to marry him again.

Pondering what the possible wedding ceremony would be like, Joyner commented: "I'd love for them to have a small family affair, with Tanya in a grown-up Audrey Hepburn-style dress.

"Maybe she wouldn't be in white this time, and it would be a different kind of wedding to the day she had when she got married to Greg Jessop a while back."

EastEnders continues tonight (June 12) at 7.30pm on BBC One.

EastEnders star Jo Joyner has revealed that a shocking Branning family secret will come out at Christmas.

The actress, who plays mum-of-three Tanya in the BBC One soap, will take a break from the show next year but will return.

"I love playing Tanya and can't wait to find out what's coming up. All I know is there's a big secret that's going to come out at Christmas and it will affect the entire Branning family. It's huge and the fans will be shocked," Joyner told the Daily Star Sunday.

She added of her break: "I only took six months when I first had the kids and was very envious of everyone taking a year. But this way I'm still getting my six months - just before they start nursery - which is really nice.

"We're hoping to move back to the countryside as I'm a real country girl at and I want to spend as much time with the kids as I can. It's a little while off yet and I have no idea how they're going to write me out but I will be back."

Joyner previously teased that the Branning family will take centre stage during this year's Christmas episodes.

Jo Joyner has decided to leave the soap for the foreseeable future.

The actress, who plays Tanya Cross, had originally intended to take an eight-month break from the middle of this year. However, after further reflection, she has now chosen to bow out from her role indefinitely.

Mum-of-two Joyner has made the decision as she wishes to spend more time with her family and explore new career opportunities.

Speaking of her choice to move on, Joyner commented: "I love playing Tanya and being part of such a great show, but she has been on quite a rollercoaster over the past seven years and I have come to realise that it's right for her to step away from Walford for a bit longer than originally planned.

"I have been very fortunate to have been part of some fantastic storylines over the years, and I have worked with some wonderful people during my time on the show which I will always be very grateful for, but I feel that as a mother and an actress it is time for me to explore some other avenues for a while."

EastEnders' executive producer Lorraine Newman added: "As the mother of Lauren, Abi and Oscar and the on/off wife to the ever errant Max, life for Tanya has never been easy. However, Jo Joyner's portrayal of Tanya allowed viewers to instantly fall in love with her, creating the cement for a great family.

"From Jo's portrayal of a cancer sufferer's fear to dealing with her daughter's excessive drinking, Jo has delivered high-class drama time and again.

"Later this year we will see the Branning family cope without her. They will of course miss her, as will her colleagues and no doubt the viewers. We wish Jo well on her ventures new."

Show bosses are currently keeping tight-lipped over how Tanya will leave Albert Square, but her departure will mark the beginning of a new era for the Branning family.

A show insider told Digital Spy: "EastEnders is a full-on commitment and on reflection, Jo felt that eight months may not be a long enough break to try her hand at other projects as well as spend the time she wants with her family, so both she and EastEnders decided to not put a time limit on her time away but to see where things go in the future.

"Although Jo will be missed, Tanya's departure will mean new changes ahead for the Branning family, which will add a whole new dynamic for them and the rest of Walford.

"Lorraine's long-term plans for EastEnders are now starting to really take shape and she has some very exciting things in store over the next few months, which are going to have the fans on the edge of their seats when they hear what's coming."

Joyner was cast in EastEnders in 2006. Since then, Tanya's turbulent relationship with Max has provided some of the show's most memorable moments in recent years.

Off-screen, Joyner won the 'Best Dramatic Performance' prize at the British Soap Awards in 2008 and 2012. Last year's ceremony also saw Joyner's work with co-star Jake Wood recognised as they won the 'Best On-Screen Partnership' gong.

EastEnders star Jo Joyner has filmed her final scenes for the soap.

The actress, who is bowing out as Tanya Cross, spoke about her exit on her Twitter page this afternoon (May 15).

Joyner spent her last day filming with co-star Jake Wood, who plays Tanya's on-off partner Max Branning.

She tweeted: "That's a wrap! I am officially 'that woman that use to play thingy in 'Enders'! Thanks to the lovely @mrjakedwood for such a special time."

Meanwhile, Wood shared a picture with fans after he and Joyner had filmed their final scene together.

He said: "So here's me and Jo after filming our last scene together this morning...gonna miss you @dollyJoyner."

Joyner announced last year that she intended to take a break from EastEnders, but she later decided that her departure would be for an indefinite period of time.

Speaking last month, she explained: "I love playing Tanya and being part of such a great show, but she has been on quite a rollercoaster over the past seven years and I have come to realise that it's right for her to step away from Walford for a bit longer than originally planned.

"I have been very fortunate to have been part of some fantastic storylines over the years, and I have worked with some wonderful people during my time on the show which I will always be very grateful for, but I feel that as a mother and an actress it is time for me to explore some other avenues for a while."

EastEnders star Jo Joyner has spoken further about her decision to leave the soap, explaining that she was keen to put her family first.

The actress has already filmed her final scenes as Tanya Cross and will bow out on screen at the end of June.

In real life, Joyner and her husband Neil Madden are parents to 3-year-old twins Freddie and Edie.

Speaking to The Sun's TV Magazine about her Albert Square exit, Joyner commented: "I've genuinely set our family up so I can take some time out and just be with them. And maybe do some theatre again.

"In years to come I wouldn't be going, 'Ooh, great, I've got lots more money in the bank', I would be saying, 'Wow, where did my children go?'

"So we're moving back to the countryside where we lived before I joined EastEnders. I'll be able to see my family and we'll have a bigger support network around us if Neil and I go back to work."

Tanya's final storyline is expected to tie in with her daughter Lauren's troubles, as the teen's drinking problem comes to a head over the next few weeks.

EastEnders star Jo Joyner has admitted that she "lost respect" for her character Tanya Cross over the years.

The actress filmed her final scenes for the BBC soap in May and will bow out on screen at the end of next week, when Tanya says an emotional farewell to Albert Square.

While some details of Tanya's exit are still being kept under wraps, viewers will see that she leaves Walford after realising that her constant dramas with on-off partner Max (Jake Wood) have had a bad influence on their alcoholic daughter Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa).

Joyner told The Sun: "Both parents have been really highly irresponsible. They've been selfish."

She continued: "They're so wrapped up in each other and their own little world that Tanya has let down her kids several times. It always amazes me when I get an introduction on telly as 'that feisty fantastic mum'.

"No, she's a terrible mum. There's nothing feisty about going back and back for more to a man and still never owning your business! No, I've lost all respect for her over the years. But I think we'll get some back for her in these last few episodes, which is good."

Tanya leaves Albert Square.

Joyner also predicted that Tanya's exit will spark a new direction for the Branning clan.

She said: "I'm trying not to give too much away here, but what [EastEnders writer] Simon Ashdown has done brilliantly here in my leaving scripts and speeches and the things that happen is that he's given me stuff to get my teeth stuck into, but it also really sets up the next year for Lauren and the family. It explains a lot of things for the family and puts them into perspective."

EastEnders airs Tanya's final episode on Friday, June 28 at 8pm on BBC One.

EastEnders star Jo Joyner has suggested that Lauren Branning's alcoholism storyline may be a wake-up call for viewers who binge drink.

Last night's (June 25) episode saw Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) diagnosed with severe liver damage as a result of her drinking problem.

As the story intensifies this week, Joyner's character Tanya will make the tough decision to leave Albert Square for the sake of her troubled daughter.

Joyner told ITV's Loose Women today (June 26): "She's seriously ill now. [Jacqueline's] done an incredible amount of research and I think that's why they've planted it for so long, so that it was more realistic. She's not been drinking every single day, although she might have done up until this point now.

"But progressively over the years, she's certainly been binge drinking in a way that a lot of people don't even think is an issue sometimes. People say, 'We'll go out Friday, Saturday and Sunday, drink quite a bit, but we don't drink during the week so I can't be an alcoholic'."

On the pressures faced by EastEnders in accurately exploring the issue, she continued: "They really have a responsibility. Whenever we have a big soap story like that, it's a huge responsibility because you're flooded with people saying it's affected them and it's reached them in a way. There's something about soap, isn't there? People plug in every night and it really becomes part of their moral life."

Show bosses are trying to keep the exact details of Tanya's exit under wraps until she leaves in Friday's episode (June 28).

Joyner added: "It's actually not a massive bang, I wouldn't say. She's got some making up to do with the kids, and I would say that this does it. There's a good family unit there for the children, but I won't be saying if any of them are coming with me. You'll have to watch on Friday!"

I shall raise my glass :D

EastEnders fans are speculating that Tanya Branning could be set to make an exciting return, following a not-so-subtle conversation in last night's episode (January 31).

The name-dropping scene in question saw Tanya's daughter Lauren admit how much she misses her, as she told Jane Beale and Stacey Fowler that she had been video calling her and would love to see her soon.

And it didn't end there either, as Tanya's friend Jane also went on to say that she needed to get in touch with her, before the trio had a giggle over the idea of Tanya attending a pub quiz.

As ever, the heavy Tanya mentions didn't go unnoticed by fans on Twitter - with many suspecting that she might be on her way back to Walford sooner rather than later.

Tanya left Albert Square in 2013 after realising that her on-off relationship with ex-husband Max Branning was having a highly damaging effect on their daughter Lauren.

Jo Joyner reprised the role briefly for the show's live week in 2015 - where she made her infamous 'How's Adam?' error, as she referred to character Ian Beale by his real name.

Former EastEnders star Jo Joyner has responded to the rumours that her character Tanya Branning could be returning to Walford.

A scene in last night's episode of the BBC soap left fans wondering if Tanya could be on her way back to Albert Square after her daughter Lauren and friend Jane had a not-so-subtle conversation about her.

However, Jo appeared to shun the claims when she revealed on Twitter today (February 1) that she's currently filming up north... which seemingly means there's no comeback for Tanya on the cards.

In her tweet, Jo teased that she would be able to "tell more" when she is able to - presumably referring to her current project, but could she have been talking about EastEnders?
