View Full Version : Where are you going for your holidays 2009?
Thought I'd start a new thread for 2009!
Where you off to this year?
Just booked my holiday with friends! Six of us are going to Ibizia for a week in July, got it for just £287 per person! Bargain! :D Bring on the boozing, clubbing and hangovers :D :cheer:
Im going with 4 other girlfriends to Zante for 2 weeks in June/July - £350 each (without travel insurance - which i need to sort out seperately) self catering :D
CANT WAIT :cheer:
Wow thats dead good
We are already on about looking to go away to but my friend mentioned like between £300 -£400 for a week, it would be better if we could getter cheaper, but then again I havent looked it was just this one girl
I wouldnt have a clue where to look

OMG that is an amazing deal Layne!!!! wish i'd seen that! would have loved to have gone for 2 weeks!

just keep going into holiday shops and asking for cheap deals, they change every day so sooner or later you'll get a bargain! You all just have to be prepared to act fast when you find a deal!
Yeh, we were pretty suprised by it, but i didn't realise how good it was until i compared prices with others! We did it through Co-op travel :)
And we're not staying in the clubbing town, but its the next town and its only a couple of miles away :D
Ive got a feeling though after 2 weeks with one another - we'll want to come home!

Try the Travel supermarket.com for deals. I got a holiday in Zante £300 cheaper than if I paid it by the travel agents. If you are willing to wait for last minute deals you could hold on to your cash just now and book some where you fly within couple of days of your booking. Me and a mate went to Ibiza (San Antionio) a few years back we booked the holiday on the Monday and flew out on the Saturday two weeks for £128 each. If you're not too fussed on five star accomodation as long as you have a bed to lay your drunk head this is the way to do it when your young, live life to the full.
Bryan make sure you go to Cala Basa beach. and get in a couple of raves, even if you hate the music go the atmostphere and the foam party. There is nothing like go home on a spanish bus at 6am soaking wet. :D
Layne I went to Alykanas, which was very quiet no clubs best place to go is Laganas that's like falarki make sure you go to the waterpark.
I'm so jealous I doubt I'll get a holiday this year unless I get full-time or win the lottery.
I don't think i'm going away either, i think i need to find a job for the whole summer as otherwise there is no way i can get through the next couple of years of my studying.
You never know though.
As per the last 3 years.. I am going to Germany again.. I love it there and I don't mind going every year... we have to see the Grandparents
I have already booked the summer hols back in Spain again. I suppose when you own property abroad you need to keep going there. Holidays somewhere else will have to wait until I am permanently living there, but then I have got a beach and loads of bars within yards, so I am quite happy to wait to see other places.
We're looking to go on holiday next month. Requirements are:
1. Temperature around 25+
2. 5/6 hour flight max
3. Not north/south america
Anyone got any nice places they can recommend?

Croatia is a really nice country. Has hot temperatures and the usual holiday things, but is much more cultured than a lot of holiday areas. Its probably around a 4 hour flight.

Try Egypt Rimmer that's hot this time of year.
Cyprus is nice and warm too but can get chilly at night time.

we have a 6 week vacation planned..it will be in the USA of course, we always change our routes so we get to see different parts of the USA, like last year we managed to log on 5300 miles on our rental,, we saw wisconsin, illinois, kentucky, tennesee, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida,Alabama ( we stopped at Elvis Presleys birth place in Tupelo) Oklaholma ( we stopped at the place where that terrorist blew up a federal building ,, really really moving )Kansas,Iowa, Funny thing about me,, I am an American, and since living in Holland , I have seen more of my own country in the past 8 years than I have in my entire life :rotfl:

we are planning a usa trip too!! landing in myrtle beach...visiting the worlds first ever hard rock theme park...then onto atlanta, few days in a log cabin in pigeon forge, then nashville and finish in memphis...that is 2 weeks, then we are going to fly to vegas for 2 weeks.
been to vegas before and orlando loads of times but dont know what to expect from the other places, if anyone has been to any of them advise would be greatly received....
cant go till 2010 though....just started saving....takes a long time to organise though, there are 6 of us for the first two weeks then 2 come home and 2 different people join us for the vegas weeks. lucky i am good at booking holidays!
We're going to the Dordogne in France. We've hired a farmhouse for 2 weeks with friends of ours. Hoping the weather will be OK as when we went to France in 2007 the weather was awful. :)

Travelsupermarket.com is quite good for cheap holidays.
I've been to Melbourne when I was 15 to visit a friend. If I went again I'd have to pop in there. There was a really nice camping place I'd love to go to that we went it was by the beach. My mum suggested we hire a campervan which might work out cheaper than hotels.
Don't know where we'd be going but I'd like to go to Sydney. And those red mountains wherever they are. :p

wow that sounds cool. we went to melbourne for a few days when we went, it was years ago when i was 13 though. ive been to sydney, its really nice, and ive also been to brisbane and cairns which were also really nice and it was so hot even though we went in their winter. we went to see my mums friend in brisbane so she knew all the places where we would like to go. we also went to new zealand while we were over there cos my friend lives in auckland but we didnt really see much of new zealand cos we just stayed with my friend and her family most of the time

But yeah I want to go there too; I should get a tourist book on Australia.
The plan is to hire a campervan and drive around at the moment. My dad wants to go for a month before in November and we'll join him when I have my uni holidays. When I've chosen which one I'm going to and know what my holidays are we're going to get the flights and then plan what we're going to do in between now and December. Plenty of time. :p Definitely visiting Sydney and Melbourne though.
My dad rang these people we know America (and did a house swap with them once) and the guy regularly comes over to England to work photographing flowers and he agreed to come over for the time we're away so he and his wife can look after the cats. :p I was worried about leaving them in a cattery for so long so its good they wants to come over then.:D

oh right, we didnt go to ayres (sp?) rock, it was a bit too far away from where we were going. sounds like youre going to have a great time, driving around in a campervan will be quite cool. are you gonna be going for actual xmas day? id definitely recommend getting an australia book, thats what we did. and glad to hear that your cats wont have to go in a cattery for that long :)

We'll be there for Christmas day yeah I'm going to be there for as long as my uni holidays is, I haven't been in a campervan since we had one when I was small so it should be interesting. :p I'm hoping to visit my friend for a couple of days at least in Melbourne.

I remember we went to Spain once and it snowed because we went into the mountains. It was sooo coold.
I'll be melting in Aus. I've looked at both Herts and uwe and they both have the same term dates so the most I'll be able to do is 3 weeks.
I'm going away on a clubbing holiday somewhere with mates, and then away with family as well. Probably Zante with friends, and maybe a cruise with family. If i can get my house at uni from summer onwards, i might go to the Isle of Wight for a few days too. I don't see the point in paying for a hotel there when i'll have a house just on the other side of the sea, lol!!

lol! when we went to australia it was their winter but it was still boiling, especially in the northern part, it was like 32 degrees so cant believe how hot it will be in their summer! it was quite weird cos when we went up the mountains in sydney it was really hot but there was snow on the ground! do you only get 3 weeks xmas hols then? we usually get 4

yeh itll probably be slightly different depending on lecture times/deadlines etc, this year my modules finished a week before the end of term (so i could have had an extra week xmas hols) but some people had tests and stuff right up til the last day. and most of the time if you can finish the work before the deadline if its at the end of term, most of the lectures on the last week arent relevant to anything so it wouldnt matter missing them lol! hopefully you can get as long as possible off though :)

Remember you might have exams in January. If your uni starts as early as we do then you'll be back the first week in Jan for exams.

oh yeh i forgot about jan exams cos i dont think my uni do them, but you might also have a deadline straight after xmas as well which if you went for the whole hols you would have to finish beforehand. you went back really early abigail, im not going back til tomorrow!

Good point I forgot about that. For uwe its 12th-23rd January, not sure about Herts can only find past dates. Seems to be later than uwe though. I'm going to definitely ask when I go to the open days again though.
I'm sure if I have exams I can revise when we are driving as well as in the evenings, or any other spare time. I'm not going to have the internet to distract me or tv and I can't really call anyone. Perfect country to revise.
Yeah dm if I had a deadline of coursework or anything I would definitely do it before I went.

Pretty sure we aren't going to rent a campervan anymore, it is cheaper to buy a used car plus you can always take a tent along if you want to do some camping. :p
As I have a place in Spain I need to go there whenever I can to make sure that everything is ok. But off to Mauritius in April for a week to attend a wedding. Don't look forward to the 12 hour flight each way. :(

:p Although if we wanted to we could! Depends on what car it would be and if it had folding down seats. I suggested a four by four in case we want to go off road. As long as its fairly roomy I don't mind what it is though. :)
Definitely taking tent though. Camping is fun when it isn't cold, wet and when there are big electric communal barbecue's. The Aussie's know how to camp!

12 hours is a long time if you're a clock watcher (like me). Eight hours to America was more than enough for me.

Disney world - Florida, again! YAY!
We are total Disney & Epcot freaks and love to do the parks (Universal Studios, Busch Gardens in Tampa etc..- there's so much to do over there, and have fun - not to mention the weather is usually sunny (if sometimes in the summer, a little damp too - well it is a bit tropical!)
Our family have been all around the world and we have travelled extensively over the years - yet we still return every year, to Florida!
Are there any more Disney freaks here?
We did Disneyland Paris once - and hated it! People smoking in the lines, and the weather - brrr... no way jose'....

Nice to see another Disney Freak!
We go in july -- we will be there for the 4th July!http://bestsmileys.com/usa1/19.gif
Independence Day is amazing over there - the parks stay open late and if you are staying in the Disney Resorts (we are) - then you get to stay and ride till after midnight.http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/hapydancsmil.gif
It is hellish busy and the queues are incredibly long - but with navigational skills (acquired after many years of visits) and fastpasses you can do loads!
Everyone is happy and the atmosphere is awesome. we cannot wait to see the fireworks again - they are *expolsive*..:cheer:

Have a great time, I am sure you will. I am sooo jealous :D
as there is no chance i can get a job, i keep getting rejected i though sack it, i not going to have the chance again and have decided to go sailing with my mate and a few others, droping a boat of at poland, we set sail from Germany and go across the Baltic. I am quite excited, will be good fun but quite hard work to.
Means i will be skint next year but never mind, i quite like beans!
Have a good time, you never know, perhaps something comes up after your trip to boost your bank balance :)

Hi there Disney freak :p
Wow you got married in Disney -- did you have the wedding at the Grand Floridian? That looks cool.. (the wedding pavilion)
belated congrats! We have stayed at the G. F a few times but prefer the Polnesian and Animal K. resort.
Tower of Terror is brilliant - we have ridden that so many times, yet never fails to thrill!
I cannot really say we have a fave.. (all the rides are great... but space mountain despite being a little old fashioned is always our first ride.
However, this year it is closed for a re-furb.:crying:
(we shall be sad if it is changed too much next year.)
We cannot wait to try out Manta - at Seaworld this year.. it opens this month.
Yes, Disneyland Paris has a few new rides - but they just don't cut it for us lot! (sorry Frenchies!)
Yes, Harry Potter looks good -- we will get to ride that next year.
Its great to know that we are not alone in our Disney'isms... we are just mad for it, and Florida, and have been going every year since 1983...:cheer:
See you in the parks oneday maybe!

we got married in Celebration, which was owned by Disney then but i think they sold it off now.....
looking forward to manta as well, my friend is flying out today so i will have to get his reports from it!
next time we have 8 people with us so far...that may grow before we actually go!! we always get a big villa to share so we can have bbq's in the evening but we do like trying all the different places to eat, our fav is bahama breeze. there's a shuttle launch as well planned, we saw one last time we went but i might try and get tickets to be really up close this time!
we love shopping out there too....we always end up paying for an extra suitcase to bring home and we dont take anything out there. last time we had to go to walmart the first night because one of the men didnt take any extra socks with him...........that's men for you.

Yes, shopping - we do too.. and especially Wallmart -- lots of cheap cosmetics and smellies! We always now take a fold out extra holdall to accommodate all the new stuff! Have you tried the Millenium Mall - it is fabby!
However, this year will not be a good year for shopping with the pound so low against the $..
You say you were married in Celebration -- how lovely..
I have seen villas for rent on Celebration, too but not sure if they are available now, as it seems like a proper community.
When we have rented, sometimes we stayed in Formosa Gardens on the lake.
We tend now to stay in the hotels and benefit from the extra hours... which is great especially in the high season when the parks are crazy busy.
Do let us know how your friend liked Manta! Yay... how exciting!

I love the fireworks
Ive been there so many times in 95, 97, 99, 02, 03, 06 and 08! :D
I went to Florida last summer. We were there for the July 4th celebrations but the weather wasn't good so we watched the fireworks from our hotel.
We stayed at the International Plaza & Spa off I-Drive. Gorgeous hotel, pools and gardens. Every night we saw the fireworks from Seaworld (our hotel looked out over the park) and the other parks.
We didn't do the water parks (I'm not a fan of swimming and water) or MGM. I loved Animal Kingdom. My sister is disabled so she got a red card from hospitality at the park gates. It meant we could jump to the front of the queue on rides and attractions :D Much better than waiting two hours for a safari, we only waited ten minutes. Being disabled comes in useful for some things

Thanks, the place we are staying apparently doesnt have much around it, all the bars etc are like a ten min walk maybe a bit longer but dad has loads of friends out there so we will more than likely spend more time with them than at the appartment we are in, one of his friends has a massive place up in the mountains it has a pool, a crazy golf course, billiards table, a bar right by the pool, snooker and pool tables, full size bowling ally and some other stuff that i dont remember. It looks massive from videos i have seen but the pool is really all i am interested in

You're one lucky lady Jodi.
Where abouts are you going this year?
The USA of course LOL we hit 10 states last year and logged about 6 thousand miles on our rental ( HERTZ must love us bringing the car in cream crackered from all the driving we did ) I have to see my grand sons ( they will be 5 and 1 by the time we see them ) my mom will be turning 88 this year ( gotta see mom ) plus a wedding plus 2 baby showers ( neices are having babies this year about the same time) then head down to Florida... hit a bunch of beaches, visit my brother ( he has a GORGEOUS home in Tampa right next to a pond with an alligator.. we named it Jodi cos he seemed to have his eye on me chomp chomp yummy Jodi )
We managed to go to : http://www.oklahomacitynationalmemorial.org/ that was probably the most haunting and moving memorial I have ever been to..
Kim ( my dutchman) totally loves the variety that the USA offers, we even managed to go to a former presidents home : http://www.nps.gov/heho it was a gorgeous area. Funnily enough I didn't know diddly about this guy ( I mean Ok he was our President before I was born but it was interesting to read about his life and see his "home" and his grave )
We are not sure where we will be going after we leave my moms, we will have 5 weeks of travel after that,, so we set the Sat Nav and just go.......best way to travel i tell ya :-D
Sounds like a proper road trip :) Hope you have lots of fun. Don't forget to post a few snaps when you get back.

Where are you off to again Katy?
I got on another Rotary camp :cheer: Poland this time. Will be going on the 1st August, picked up by uncle, then put on the train the next day, camp is 2-16. Then going back to Warsaw until the 19th. My mum and sister decided to go for a holiday there around the same time so we will fly back together. Can't wait. First week stay with host family in Pulawy, go sightseeing, and also go on a canoeing trip. Second week horseriding as well as walking/biking in the forest. Good chance to brush up on my polish too! :p
I really would recommend anyone to go contact their local Rotary to see what camps they could do...apart from flights and a deposit fee thing its all free. You don't have to belong to Rotary. You can usually do it up to age 25.

Denmark - Copenhagen (outskirts and city) and Frederikssund. Been to the theme park in the city, seen all the attractions in Frederikssund like the museums, went kayaking, and cycled 40km to a beach. They think up a lot of activities on these Rotary camps! :p
Globally...we travelled more when I was younger..but India, Sri Landa, Australia, Ireland, Scotland, Tenerife, Germany, (school trip ), Poland a few times (mum's Polish), America, Kenya (was a baby though), Egypt, Tunisia, Italy, Spain, France. I think that's it. :p

You have been to some truly amazing places like India and Australia- I would so love to see more of that side of the world.
I have travelled all over Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Guyana, Poland, Egypt (To see the pyramids, the nile and the resort sharm el Skeikh) Spain, America (Florida, Seattle, Colorado), Canada (Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal), plus Holland where I used to live and work and now I am based in the UK for the last few years.
I have had the travelling bug for way too long itching to go somewhere new I really would like to visit Asia followed by Australia and then New Zealand :)
I am sooo envious reading about all the places you have been to, but I have not done too badly really. Been to America, Sri Lanka, Spain, Cyprus, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France and recently to Mauritius. I think it is the Australia and New Zealand bit that gets to me, places I sooo want to go to but OH not keen. Whilst we are still working (another 5 years before Him Indoors retires) we need to go to Spain to look after the apartment. Once we live there, we can go to other places and hopefully Australia is one of them. :)

Yeah I would really recommend Australia. I've only ever been to Melbourne.
If you guys go to Australia, I would really recommend Wilson's Promontory National Park - You have the penguins, koala's, Squeaky Beach and you could spend days around the coves and secluded beaches. Hire a car or something, all these tourist coaches are no fun. :p You need a minimum of three weeks in Australia, I'd probably think you'd need a week minimum for each city. Plus any travelling in between/stopping off to see places inbetween.
I would love to go to NZ too one day.
Perdita what is it the OH is not keen on Australia? Long flight?
I don't think he knows himself. Won't be the long flight, he is used to that in his job and does not mind. I am sure he would go if there was a reason, like family or so, it is just going there with me that is probably why he does not want to

Canada is truly beautiful I loved Vancouver - the place is amazing so much to see if you get the chance go and spend some time on Vancouver Island.
So to go to Australia you will need about 3 weeks I will remember that. Was there a lot of creepy crawlies there? Did you just stay in the city or did you get to explore the outback too?
StarsOfCCTV
22-06-2009, 01:09
I did both. I'd say spend time doing what you want in the city then just head out into the bush so you don't have to keep going back and forth.
I guess there is creepy crawlies, as with every hot climate, but they probably have provisions there like helicopters in case you get bitten by something dangerous. I think there are some places you are not meant to swim, because of jellyfish. But I never had any problems with bugs or anything while I was there.

I guess there is creepy crawlies, as with every hot climate, but they probably have provisions there like helicopters in case you get bitten by something dangerous. I think there are some places you are not meant to swim, because of jellyfish. But I never had any problems with bugs or anything while I was there.
when i went the only place they really warned us about creepy crawlies was in cains cos of it being tropicalish! i didnt get bitten or anything though or even really see anything dangerous! it was a bit scary to start with though having to remember to look in your shoes before you put them on and completely in your bed incase anything was in there! although i think australia is meant to have 8 out of the 10 of the worlds most poisonous spiders or something?

I did both. I'd say spend time doing what you want in the city then just head out into the bush so you don't have to keep going back and forth.

I don't think he knows himself. Won't be the long flight, he is used to that in his job and does not mind. I am sure he would go if there was a reason, like family or so, it is just going there with me that is probably why he does not want to
Awww lol. Well just gently nag him you will get there in the end.
Thanks for that!

A friend of mine used to live in Australia and he said he only saw one poisonous spider in the two years that he lived there and snakes aren't that common in urban areas.

I'm hoping to go to Florida a few days after christmas for a week. I'd love to go for the full two weeks but I can't afford it and I don't know what exams I have in January yet.
I'm spending two days in london in October with one of my best mates. My mum and dads paying for that as my 18th. And i may be spending new year down south with my best mates, her dad, her stepmum and their friends/family:D

Very good food, I don't drink so I didn't get to taste any of the wines like my parents did who seemed to have no complaints but the weather was good too, lots to see and everyone seemed so stylish and well kept compared to me in my roughest pair of jeans!

If I was to head there I would want to do something like travel down route 66, see the grand canyon and stuff like that, theme parks and that doesn't appeal to me or new york but I do want to head to san francisco have you been there?
No we always go to Orlando in Florida
GossipGirl
22-08-2009, 22:42
Oh ok. is it nice there?
Yeah, we are disney freaks lol and love all that kind of thing but then we always go to the beaches which are really nice.
Weve also been to Sarasotoa (sp?) in Florida near Tampa

Sounds nice but I am not a beach person if I had to go on the beach I would want to do something like water skiing or try absailing. Was it pricey there? Much to do apart from being at a resort?
Yeah we are never at our resort which is why we always get it cheap
Its very cheap there, I mean we've just been Turkey which was cheap, but Florida is cheaper.
There is loads to do, we are just in the parks so much we never get round to the other stuff
GossipGirl

I think what I am after is to get the real feel of the place then to be at a hotel at a resort which is why I ask what can you do there? Apart from the theme parks? Can you get a real american experience?
To me though, what is the american exerpience cos each state is different
The thing with orlando is apart from sleeping you never spend time ate your hotel cos most people spend the time at the parks
Theres loads of stuff you can do its just Ive never looked into cos I love the paks, but Ive known other people to go there and not go to the parks much.
Florida is a big state and you can go the the Florida keys and swim with dolphins and one time we went canoeing down this big lake where there were aligators
What would you call a real american experience?
I went to Florida last year and had a great time. There's so much to do apart from Disney. There's Seaworld, which is more than just fish and is very hands-on. Then there's the shopping at the Florida Mall or the outlet centre. Kennedy Space Centre, lots of attractions on International Drive (the main place in Orlando), great places to eat, plenty of dinner shows. Also the Everglades, if you into that sort of thing.
It's not just Orlando, Florida is a big state with lots to see and do.
I'd recommend it :)
Last time we did a little bit a reseach into other stuff but never bothered with it, but there was stuff like hot air balloon rides and I cant remember what else
Oh I went on a helicopter ride. I don't think it was all that expensive and we got photos and a dvd of it.

I think I would something away from the theme parks and events you could see. The places that we have been too we have been able to get away from the mainstream places and discovered what the country is about could this be done in Florida? Could you head away from the places you have mentioned and get to see Florida for what it is?

If I ever afford to go to Florida I'll send Marley round the theme parks so she can spend her day on rollercoasters and I will lie on the beach with my trashy book.

I've no idea how I came about this website, but its actually quite good - and free! Not so worried about flying now. :p

ETA: Expect lots of pictures when I get back! I am taking three cameras with me. (One digital, one fisheye film camera, one normal film camera but with panoramic viewfinder)
Have a great time :) Found the website very useful for myself as I am not too keen of flying long distance, thanks for posting it.
I highly doubt that I'm going camping now given what's going on. So I need some ideas of cheap places to stay anywhere in England, Scotland or Wales. Travel and transport isn't an issue but I would really like to book somewhere, preferably next weekend (18th) or in the week after New Year, so that we have some concrete plans instead of wild camping.
Also would prefer scenic, not in a caravan () and with some walking or nature trails. Nothing too strenuous!

I'll be coming in the bottom of a cargo ship seeing as I have no current passport and no money for airfare.
If anyone wishes to send me a map, compass and GPS so I can find my way to the nearest port, I'd very much appreciate it :D :D I will return them in due course...

Anyone know where I can get a cheap flight to Tel Aviv 28th March to 7th April 2010? My dates are slightly flexible but I have to be in Israel on the morning on the 30th until the 6th.
Tried BA, Virgin, Easyjet (600 quid!), Opodo, STA, BMI, dealchecker and various others but they all want at least 400 which is out of my price range.

I couldn't find anything under £410 - and that was stretching your dates a bit. Using your dates the best I could find was £464! Sorry.
Jet2 flys from Manchester to Tel Aviv, but you would have to be there from 18th March - 15th April to get a cheaper flight.
Air Baltic, leaving on 28th March and coming back on 8th April is 366.21 euro (£326). But they are not flexible flights. (or £275 coming back on the 9th)

Thanks. Will have to see how much accommodation is outside of my set dates to see if an extra few days is worth waiting for a cheaper flight.
I haven't come across air Baltic before, they're a lot cheaper than other places I've looked. STA Travel are a rip off to say they cater specifically for students and under 26.
