That's right - Ashes To Ashes is back for a second series in 2009, and as producer Beth Willis tells us, this time it's all about corruption...

The storyline with Alex and her parents found its resolution at the end of the last series. Is there a new mystery to see us through this series?
"Yes there is. Alex had a lot of certainty last time: as soon as she landed in 1981 she knew she was there for a reason , which was to see her parents. At the end of the series, she realised that that wasn't why she was there. It wasn't about saving [her parents] or stopping what happened because as far as she's aware, you can't change things in this world. It was actually about learning something about herself. In series two she starts off with a lot more uncertainty. It's been about six or seven months since we left her - it's now 1982 - and nothing's happened for a long time. But in episode one she gets news which alters her view of what's going on in 2008 and what's happened to her. And she also gets some news in 1982 which makes her think this world is not as straightforward as she thought it was!"

You've previously said that series two "moves in a slightly different direction". What did you mean by that?
"I think it's slightly darker. There's a big backbone across the series concerning police corruption in Gene's world. That's something that Gene and Alex have to deal with, seek out, battle against and survive amongst. I think that adds an element of darkness to their world, which is quite exciting and hopefully quite historically accurate, because there was a great deal of police corruption in that time. We wanted to explore what Gene would think about that and where his morals would lie. It's still massively fun, though."

This year the legendary Supermac makes an appearance. What does he bring to the team?
"Supermac is Gene's boss, and he is somebody who they all look up to in a big way. In episode one we find out that he is possibly involved in this corruption story, so that's a force that Alex and Gene are having to battle with across the series."

How does the relationship between Alex and Gene develop this series?
"At the end of episode eight last year, she realised he'd essentially saved her as a little girl, which made her have a respect for him that she hadn't had in the rest of the series. Not just for Gene in fact, but all the characters in the world. She'd spent a lot of time saying 'you're all constructs, so I don't really care what happens to you and it doesn't really matter'. Between then and now she's learnt to respect, and possibly even love, the people in this world. It feels very real to her now and she's been there enough of a time to feel as if that's her real life. One of the heartening things for Alex is that this world is gradually becoming more real to her than the real world is. In some ways she's willing to accept her feelings towards Gene more - but they'll still battle it out, flirt, disagree, shout and swear at each other in an incredibly appealing and sexy way!"

Does Sam Tyler crop up again in this series or have we drawn a line under that now?
"I think we've essentially drawn a line but he does crop up a couple of times. We have a character from Life On Mars who will come up at some point during the series and that will inevitably reopen questions about Sam..."

Is it possible you could have John Simm back?
"I'm sure that would be an interesting thing to do but I think it would have to be story-led. What we know thusfar is that Sam Tyler's car went into the river and he died. So that would be a bigger picture we are exploring if he were to come back!"

When the show launched earlier this year Phil Glenister said he saw Ashes as a two-series show. Was he right? Will this be the second and last series?
"I think there's definitely a bigger picture which could be explored in a third series. Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharaoh (exec producers) have always talked about the third series and we've always known in our heads what that would be. Fingers crossed that it's commissioned! It's not something we can say for definite but there's definitely a story to be told. In the meantime we've come up with a pretty exciting story for series two."

How far do you think this could go? When Ashes To Ashes ends, could you launch another spinoff show?
"Never say never. Certainly in our heads, we know about three series and we've got that far in terms of stories. That's not to say we couldn't do something else, of course."

Ashes To Ashes producer Beth Willis has revealed that a familiar face from Life On Mars will appear in the second season of the spinoff show.

Willis told Digital Spy: "We have a character from Life On Mars who will come up at some point during the series and that will inevitably reopen questions about Sam [Tyler]."

Discussing the possibility of a return to the franchise for John Simm, who played Tyler, Willis said: "I'm sure that would be an interesting thing to do but I think it would have to be story-led.

"What we know thus far is that Sam Tyler's car went into the river and he died. So that would be a bigger picture we are exploring if he were to come back."

Calling all Rat fans! Guess who’s popping up in the next series of Ashes To Ashes?

Yep, Roland himself will be making a guest cameo, delivering a message to DI Drake (Keeley Hawes) from her daughter Molly.

And he’s not alone... Although she’s stuck in 1982, Alex will continue to receive contact aplenty through the telly from 2009.

One of these messages will be given to her by everyone’s fave headmistress –Mrs McCluskey!

A source said: “Roland will be on hand with his catchphrase, ‘Heeeeeeee, rat fans!’ and Mrs McCluskey will appear on the screen in all her Grange Hill glory.” Yay to that.

Of course the whole shebang wouldn’t be complete without Morph who’ll also turn up to give us a wave (that’s about it, the little chap doesn’t say much).

Catch the retro crew on BBC1 from April.

Fire up the Quattro!

GOBBY DCI Gene Hunt is to face the unthinkable — someone who can make him shut up.

The Ashes To Ashes cop, played by Philip Glenister, 46, is put in his place when a police legend is brought in as his boss.

Detective Superintendent Mackintosh, known as “Supermac”, will be played by Roger Allam.

A source said: “Supermac is hailed as a star and not someone to be messed with. But Gene’s instinct tells him that something isn’t quite right.”

The BBC1 series returns next month.

CLASSIC teen soap Grange Hill has been revived for the new series of Ashes To Ashes.
Boffins at the Beeb have worked their magic to weave scenes into the time-travelling cop drama.

Their computer wizardry has even allowed them to have legendary headmistress Mrs Bridget McClusky lecturing Ashes girl Molly, the daughter of DI Alex Drake. The amazing footage appears in the first episode of the second series on BBC1.

Alex (Keeley Hawes), trapped in 1982 after being transported there by a bullet, wakes to find Grange Hill on TV.

She sees Molly (Grace Vance) in the drama, which ran for 30 years on British screens until September last year.

The 12-year-old has been summoned to Mrs McClusky’s office after apparently fighting with famed character Tucker (Todd Carty).

Mrs McClusky, who was originally played by Gwyneth Powell, is seen telling Molly: “We want to know why you locked yourself in the toilet.”

Molly replies: “Tucker said my mum was dead. We had a fight. Miss Mooney said I was to come and see you. I didn’t want to.”

Mrs McClusky, firm but fair, tells the youngster: “Listen Molly, when a teacher says something to you, you have to do it. Do you understand?”

As Alex stares at the screen, Molly replies: “It’s my mum, there’s news... ”

But then the Grange Hill credits roll, leaving Alex still trapped in 1982 and fighting to find her way back to 2009.

All she knows is she was shot and has woken in a bygone age.

Ashes To Ashes series two starts later this month on BBC1.

Ashes To Ashes Ep 5/8
Monday 18 May
9.00-10.00pm BBC ONE

DI Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes) and DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) attempt to salvage the reputation of
the forceThe Met is in trouble. Following the death of Supermac, stories of corruption have made it to the press and DCI Gene Hunt needs a big collar to salvage the reputation of the force, as the Eighties police drama continues.

When a violent burglary takes place, it seems this could be Gene's chance to show the public what the police are for. However, when DI Alex Drake discovers the burglary took place at the house of her future in-laws, she comes face-to-face with a 14-year-old Peter Drake – Molly's dad. Alex, still hurting from Peter's treatment of her and Molly in the future, can't help but take out her anger on him.

Meanwhile, when the fingerprints of a supposedly dead gangster, George Staines, are found at the crime scene, Gene realises this could be just the case he needs to save the force.

When Gene and Alex talk to George's mother, Elsie, she is convinced George is dead. But something isn't adding up, especially when they discover a large amount of cash in Elsie's biscuit tin.

Alex becomes suspicious of the Drake family's neighbour, Gaynor, and when the team discovers she visited Elsie for no apparent reason, it seems she must have been the one to give Elsie the money.

All the team has to do is link Gaynor to George. However, when Gene, with his trusted sidekicks DS Ray Carling and DC Chris Skelton, trails Gaynor in the hope she will lead them to George, the case takes a different direction. They soon realise that it may not be quite as straightforward as they hoped...
