holby.tv can reveal that CASUALTY actor Matthew Needham is leaving CASUALTY.

Matthew, who has played F2 Doctor Toby de Silva since September 2007, will bow out of the show following the New Year episode to be screened on 3rd January.

During his time on the medical drama, the character of Toby has struggled with the pressures of his medical career whilst his current storyline involves him coming to terms with his sexuality.

Stay tuned for further cast departures to be announced early next year...

Not really bothered either way about this. Tristan (Adam) and Gillian (Jess) had best not be leaving though :nono:

I'm gonna miss him. And I really wanted to see something progress with him and Ben :crying:.

I think thats such a shame. To me he's always been the downtrodden one out of him a Ruth - with her trying to outshine him and kind of shove him out of the way constantly - and now he's leaving :( They could have really progressed his character and he could have shone through

I agree the writers havn't given Toby a chance to progress as a character he has always been living in Ruth's shadow, not that I am critisising Ruth suicide storyline but since Maggie left he has not had a lot to do and to suddenly give him a homosexual storyline out of the blue is just a cop out by the writers to me. They could have explored it more.

It's not looking good for Toby. Again a classic muck up by writers they could have kept Toby and Ben and explored them as a couple. Casualty fans know it takes more than one series to get to know a character they never gave Toby a chance.

Yh i agree with that you can't build a profile of a charactor in the time toby has been there so we haven't seen every side to him x
