Almost two years later, the con is back on.

The Hustle gang return for a much-anticipated fifth series in the New Year - and Mickey Bricks (Adrian Lester) is firmly back in charge. Creator Tony Jordan lets us in on what else the new series has in store.

How did the new series come about?
"When Adrian Lester left at the end of series three, there was something really interesting to me about doing a series with Danny Blue (Marc Warren) in charge. Danny had been knocking on the door for the first few series, wanting to be the boss, so I thought it was quite exciting to see what kind of job Danny would make as leader of the crew. In that series we did Hollywood, with Robert Wagner, then for the finale we did Las Vegas. Then I kind of felt that was it and I'd done everything I wanted to do. So it just kind of went away and I moved on to other things. Then I was in conversation with Adrian Lester, who suggested he might come back, so that suddenly sparked my interest again."

What has Mickey been up to in the intervening period?
"In the last series it was explained that he was in Australia, selling the Sydney Opera House. We see a bit of that in the first episode of the new series. Then he comes back from Australia to find that his crew no longer exists. So it's a little bit like the first episode ever, with Mickey assembling his team again."

Which other characters are coming back and do we have new ones?
"Ash is back, Albert is back and Eddie is back, but there's no Danny and Jaime Murray is off Dexter-ing, so we lost Stacie too. Of course, we've got new characters - and that's part of the surprise of the first episode. There are lots of twists and turns in the first episode!"

What sort of cons do the gang have this year?
"We're kind of lucky in a way I suppose, in that right slap bang in the middle of the [writing] process we started hitting the recession and credit crunch. It would have been silly of us not to use this world, so Mickey comes back to a very different London to the one he left. He left with everyone on a high, house prices spiralling and everybody having a ball, but now it's doom and gloom and even the banks are going bust. We've got some great cons too. For the first time ever, I've used the same mark in more than one episode. Early on in the series we see a mark and then later on in the series he comes back for his revenge. That's quite cool!"

Earlier this year Jaime Murray told me you were working on Hustle: The Movie. How's that coming along?
"I have written a Hustle movie. It's quite a difficult thing to do - how do you make it more than an extended episode of Hustle? How do you please the Hustle audience but also make it accessible to people who've never seen the show before? It's quite a tricky thing. So yes it is a live project and I have written a couple of drafts, but I'm still fighting with it. I'm just about to do another draft. I think it will happen."

It's intended for the big screen?
"Yeah, and that's what makes it difficult. If it was just a TV film, obviously that would be a much easier proposition - I'd just do a 90-minute version of Hustle! For the big screen there are so many other things to take into consideration. Do you do it carrying on from the last series? Do I do it with the new crew or old crew? Do I recast? There are a lot of questions we're fighting our way through to come up with the best version. It's work-in-progress."

Season 8 Finale

LOOK who’s back. It’s sexy Stacie Monroe, played by Jaime Murray, 34.

She quit the TV grifting team back in 2007.

But she makes a sensational return to help her old mates out in the series finale.

Stacie rejoins Mickey (pictured here played by Adrian Lester, 43) and the team as they take on a crooked Gulf businessman in a stock market con.

It will be the last-ever con in the final show on Friday on BBC1 at 9pm.

Hustled out: Stars gunned down in final episode of BBC1 con drama

Standing on top of a tower block facing a man with a machine gun and his evil accomplices, the Hustle gang have run out of places to hide

Their faces contorted in agony, the con artists from BBC1 drama Hustle are gunned down by one of their vengeful victims.

Standing on top of a tower block facing a man with a machine gun and his evil accomplices, the Hustle gang have run out of places to hide.

Realising that this could be the end for them all, leader Mickey “Bricks” Stone – played by Adrian Lester – launches into a last-ditch attempt to save their skins.

“Gentlemen,” he smiles. “I know what you are thinking…”

But Mickey doesn’t get to finish his sentence as he and all the other con artists – Albert (Robert Vaughn), Ash (Robert Glenister), Emma (Kelly Adams) and Sean (Matt di Angelo) – are viciously gunned down in cold blood.

They each hit the ground with a thud as a particularly nasty “mark” takes his revenge – in broad daylight - over their audacious bid to swindle him out of £10million.

The Hustlers’ plan was to stage their most daring con yet, to provide them all with a “retirement fund” before they go their separate ways.

But somewhere along the line, things went awry.

The gory scenes will be screened at the very start of Friday’s last ever episode of Hustle, on BBC1.

The rest of the action turns the clock back by four days so viewers can discover how they got themselves into the chilling life or death predicament.

After being hit by a hail of bullets in the opening moments, Mickey turns to the camera for one of his distinctive monologues, and gasps: “I guess most of you must have thought that one day it would end like this.”

After eight successful series on BBC1, fans will be desperate to know if this really is the end of the road for the slick conning crew.

One show insider said: “There are several twists and surprises along the way, including the return of a familiar face or two. The viewers are in for a treat.”

The gory scenes will be aired tomorrow night in the explosive opening moments of the long-running show’s last-ever episode.

With their limp bodies strewn on the ground it looks like it’s the end for Mickey – played by Adrian Lester – Albert (Robert Vaughn), Emma (Kelly Adams), Sean (Matt Di Angelo) and Ash (Robert Glenister).

Blood money: Cash blows around the bodies BBC

A show insider said: “There are several twists and surprises along the way, including the return of a familiar face or two.

"Viewers are certainly in for a few shocks.”

IS this the end for the Hustle gang?

After nine series of the popular BBC1 drama, tomorrow night's episode will be the last one ever – and it looks like the gang will be going down in a hail of bullets.

The Hustle crew – Mickey, Ash, Albert, Emma and Sean – meet their gory end on the roof of a tower block, as they face down a man with a machine gun and have nowhere to hide.

Friday night's show opens with the shocking scenes, then rewinds to four days earlier, where we discover that their latest 'mark' is behind the attack.

Gunned down ... Albert (Robert Vaughn)
Taking on a ruthless murderer isn't the con artists' usual scene, but Mickey (Adrian Lester) has decided the time has come for them to stop their grifting ways and pull off one last job that'll make them enough money to retire on.

Over and out? ... Gang leader Mickey (Adrian Lester) tries to run for it
But judging by these pictures, it doesn't look like his masterplan has worked.

Bullet wounds ... Ash (Robert Glenister) is shot three times
The other Hustlers, Albert (Robert Vaughn), Ash (Robert Glenister), Emma (Kelly Adams) and Sean (Matt di Angelo) are also in the line of fire, as bullets fly and cash blows around their limp and blood-stained bodies.
And that's not the only surprise – a very familiar face makes an appearance, but seems to be on the side of the bad guy.

Blood-spattered ... Sean (Matt Di Angelo) is in agony
But we all know that when it comes to Hustle, nothing is ever really as it seems. So let's hope this brutal battle isn't really the gang's final farewell.
A show insider said: "There are several twists and surprises along the way, including the return of a familiar face or two. Viewers are certainly in for a few shocks."

To absolutely nobody's surprise, the Hustle team were, of course, not shot down after all. Taking their cue from the way The Sting ends it was just another set up.

I did think the reference to The Magnificent Seven and Robert Vaughan's face was brilliant though.
