Tony pays Maria a visit

Tony is a worried man - Maria’s phone messages have left him in no doubt that she suspects him of murder. He leaves for the factory where he confronts Rosie who admits that Maria has seen the footage of Liam and Carla kissing and that she has been behaving strangely ever since.

Knowing he has to act fast, Tony decides to pay Maria a visit. How is he going to silence her?

Steve’s bad boyfriend plan has stepped up a gear. First he walks around the flat smelly, unkempt and unshaven. Then he tells Michelle that he isn’t going to bother with Christmas presents this year. She's not happy and he really thinks that he's done it this time. But Michelle confides in Becky that Steve’s behaviour is upsetting Amy.

Meanwhile, Steve’s plans for Amy’s birthday party get off to a dodgy start when Jesse Chadwick the entertainer turns up - minus his wife, the other half of his double act. He’s clearly not in the mood for entertaining as his wife has run off with someone else.

It’s Tyrone’s birthday and he is miserable without Molly. Pam speaks to her and asks her to stop blaming Tyrone but Molly still can’t find it in her heart to forgive him.

Elsewhere, Hayley suggests to Roy that they host a Christmas lunch for the homeless.

Steve consoles Jesse

Maria is locked in the house with her husband’s killer and listens. She's stunned as Tony tells her that the affair was going on for months and admits that he wanted Liam out of the way.

Just when she thinks he is close to confessing, he changes tack and admits that he does feel responsible for Liam’s death but refuses to come clean about what really happened. Tony then offers her a million pounds to stop the accusations.

Maria is aghast and when Fiz knocks on the door she screams at her get him out of the house – but Tony has already unlocked the door and, sensing that Fiz already thinks Maria is acting, he feigns concern for her state of mind.

Leaving the house, he sees Maria heading off to the police station and knows he has to get to Carla first. How will she react to the news that Tony knew all about her and Liam?

Steve has managed to console Jesse who has agreed to do the party for Amy. When Eileen arrives in the pub, the pair hit it off and soon, Eileen is donning his ex-wife Hia-Lowa's costume and entertaining the kids.

The party is a huge hit and Becky spots a touching moment between Michelle and Steve. With a heavy heart, Becky tells him to lay off the bad boyfriend act until at least after Christmas.

Elsewhere on the Street, Pam spots another way to make a fast buck; Peter invites Leanne to a work Christmas do which doesn’t turn out quite as she’s expected; and Mary appears to have developed a crush on Norris, much to Jed’s amusement.

The police quiz Tony

As the police arrive at Tony and Carla’s flat, Tony prepares for the performance of his life. Having already told Carla about Maria’s accusations and that he knew about the affair, he's confident he can hold it together and put the police off the scent.

As they quiz him, Tony is calm. He denies offering Maria money for her silence and paints a picture of a deranged widow looking for revenge. As the police leave, it looks like he's convinced them – but has he managed to pull the wool over Carla’s eyes?

It’s a cosy Christmas scene over at the bookies flat as Leanne helps Peter and Simon decorate the tree. Leanne is enjoying the family atmosphere and is happy to stay after Simon has gone to bed.

But she notices Peter’s excessive drinking and as he gets louder and more drunk, she decides to call it a night. But Peter’s having none of it and tries to make her stay – with disastrous consequences.

Gail arrives home to find the Windasses have gone to town with their Christmas lights, she takes a deep breath and heads inside for a quiet night with Joe but when the time for the official switch on arrives she gets a shock – it's not only the Windasses who are lighting up the street.

Elsewhere, Eileen and Jesse hit it off during a post-gig drink; and Liz introduces Michelle to her new friend Poppy who also just happens to be a barmaid.

Carla confronts Rosie over her betrayal

Peter has some bridges to build following the events of the previous evening but first he has to redecorate the tree and find Simon a costume for the nativity play. He asks Leanne to go with him but she's sick of his behaviour and resigns.

Drowning his sorrows, Peter turns up for the nativity play rather a little worse for wear and when the teacher tries to stop him from entering the hall, he makes a scene and storms in.

Carla can’t understand why Tony won’t sack Rosie but he insists that he would also have to sack Sally and that would arouse suspicion. Carla decides to let Rosie know exactly how she feels about her betrayal, before heading over to Maria’s to tell her her side of the story.

Liz annoys Michelle by appointing Poppy assistant manager of the Rovers. She tackles Steve but he takes his mum’s side insisting her can’t undermine her as she runs the pub.

Norris is less than impressed when he returns home to find Jed and Mary tangled up in fairy lights. Mary insists to Norris that she isn’t interested in Jed but makes it clear that the age gap isn’t the problem.

Peter stumbles into Simon's nativity play
Airs on Friday, December 19 2008 at 20:30 GMT on ITV1

The nativity play audience watch aghast as a drunken Peter stumbles to the front of the hall. Deirdre comforts Simon as Blanche confronts a belligerent Peter. He is escorted from the premises and Ken manages to snatch his car keys off him, insisting that Simon is going home with them.

Back on the Street, Peter goes from bad to worse until Liz asks him to leave the Rovers. He bangs on Ken and Deirdre’s door insisting that he wants to see his son but Ken refuses. Leanne arrives just in time to stop Peter hitting his father.

Jack is back from Blackpool and is devastated that Tyrone and Molly have split. He tries to set them up by getting Molly to make him tea but Molly is still hostile towards Tyrone.

Carla tells Leanne that Tony knew about the affair but has forgiven her. Leanne, however, isn't convinced that Tony is the forgiving type.

Meanwhile, Jed has heard Maria’s accusation and thinks he's on to something – he lets Tony know that he's going to compare notes with Maria.

Elsewhere, Rosie meets with a journalist and spies a way of making some cash out of her kidnap ordeal.
