Drunk women who cannot walk home in their heels are to be given free flip-flops under a new initiative to reduce injuries in Torbay.
Officials behind the £30,000 Safer Communities Torbay (SCT) plan hope that the flat slip-ons will reduce the number of accidents caused by "dangerous footwear", reports The Times.
The scheme, which kicks off next month, will see police officers walking around with a ready supply of the unisex shoes to hand to anyone who appears unsteady.
Pressure group Taxpayers' Alliance apparently criticised the Home Office-funded initiative as an "idiotic waste of money".
However, Torbay Police Superintendent Chris Singer said: "We're hopeful that this initiative will help protect dozens of women who are vulnerable to injury after a night out with friends."
The £30,000 budget will also cover the cost of free condoms, rape alarms and the provision of personal safety information.
Can't see loads of ladies on a hen night , for example, wanting to spoil the way they look by wearing flip flops
