A new regular weekly documentary series is to be introduced on BBC One which will be shown after the 10 O'Clock news on Tuesday nights.

The BBC One controller, Jay Hunt, said today that she wanted to find a "distinct home for outstanding documentaries".

To avoid the series becoming pigeonholed, the shows will not run under a specific brand name.

Commissions already include a programme about what Hunt calls "survivors' guilt", which includes looking at the survivors of the Marchioness cruise boat disaster on the River Thames.

Hunt said she wanted the strand to focus on "storytelling" and promised a greater commitment and "refreshing" of her channel's factual output.

Hunt also said that a new science show would be introduced on BBC One from next year.

Although she said the new show would not be Tomorrow's World, she said: "I want to bring science back to a general slot on the channel ... from next summer a brand new magazine show will come back to BBC One."
