Ricky Tomlinson has revealed that giggling disrupted the filming of the BBC's Royle Family Christmas special.

The cast of the sitcom last appeared together in 2006 episode 'Queen of Sheba', in which Liz Smith's character Nana died.

Having reunited after two years, Tomlinson said that the production was hindered by hilarity.

"We had two weeks to do it but lost a week through laughing. Craig [Cash] is a giggler and we had to stop for half an hour at a time," Teletext quotes him as saying.

The special forms part of the BBC's festive lineup, unveiled yesterday by the corporation.

Must have been fun filming all that

Who saw this last night? What did you make of it?

It was alright, not as funny as some of the past ones! Missed Nana and Anthony! It was weird it being at Dave & Denise's house, as the action has never left the Royle house apart from when Nana went to hospital!

OMG the turkey in the bath! That was hilarious! And them complaining about Jamie Oliver, so funny as I've been telling my mom for the past week "Jamie Oliver says to do this, Jamie Oliver says to use this" and she says "bloody Jamie Olivier, I can't afford the things he uses" then they joke about it on there!

So funny with Bodybag from Bad Girls as Dave's mom, and David Senior LMAO. "Barb-era!" LMFAO!!!

I did want another series of this, but dunno if it'd be as funny anymore.

I loved it - I couldn't place Dave's mum for ages - his father was brill - would love another series cos I think the one liners and looks from Jim are classic.

Yeah I thought it was really good. Gotta love this show. I also missed Anthony though. I love the line of Denise "Christmas not really a day for children is it" Or something like that :p Funny. Loved all the turkey stuff  Hilarious. Just loved it really :p.

Bodybags that's who Dave's mum was, I was trying to think were I had bloody seen her before. Her and Dave Senior were more funny than twiggy. Loved the jokes about Jamie Oliver and Nigella and 5p for a carrier bag. I missed Nana though.

Fair point well made Jimbo!!! haha!

I thought it was quite good! Dave's dad was hilarious :D

I dont like the way they've turned Dave and Denise into complete simpletons though. yeah they've always been a bit dim but I think the writers took it a bit too far to be honest!!

It was good though overall. and I never even realised it was Bodybag until about half way through!! How different did she look!

Tabloid reports have claimed that Caroline Aherne has signed up to make two more Royle Family specials.

According to The Mirror, Aherne and co-writer Craig Cash have agreed "in principle" to a deal for two more episodes.

"We billed this year's special as a one-off but Caroline has agreed in principle a deal to create more new specials for next year and the year after," a BBC insider is quoted as saying.

"It would be great if the new episodes could be screened at Christmas so we could get another quality programme in the schedule each year."

The Royle Family was the fourth most watched show on Christmas Day, with 9.98 million viewers.

The sitcom, which stars Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston, originally ran for three series between 1998 and 2000.

A camera fault reportedly ruined two days' worth of footage for The Royle Family Christmas special at an estimated cost of £100,000.

Writer Phil Mealey said that a tiny object had dropped in the lens, ruining the film and resulting in the cast being recalled. "When we looked at the footage, it was like my holiday photographs - everyone's head was cut off. Everything was lost. We were absolutely gutted," he told The Daily Telegraph.

"The camera had been checked and what was coming through on the monitors in the studio was fine. But a ground glass piece or something had dropped in the lens. It was like going to Boots with your wedding snaps ruined but on a massive scale."

Mealey estimated that the fault may have cost Jellylegs, the independent production company that he co-owns, about £100,000. "All that kind of thing is insured in the event of something happening. It's just one of those things. And we're delighted with the finished product. There are some very funny scenes in it," he said.

This year's festive episode, called The Golden Egg Cup, airs on BBC One at 9pm on Christmas Day.
