Anti-virus programmes

I recently bought McAfee as virus protection for my laptop, I had a different programme on before but somehow could not get it extended. Ever since, my laptop is soooo slow, it does my head in at times, I think it checks everything, even loading my home page which is Google. Especially annoying if you want to get on to eBay for example and time is short. Has anybody else experienced this with McAfee or any idea what I can do to get the programmes to speed up again. Thanks for any advice. :)

You should be able to schedule it to run once a week on a low period instead of every day.. that will slow your machine down on the day you schedule but let you use your machine as normal the rest of the time
