DEIRDRE Barlow will be a wealthy woman if the government put a monkey on the Moon in the next 20 years.

Deirdre’s windfall could come courtesy of her batty mum Blanche who places a bizarre bet with the local bookie at 10,000-1 that there will be a spaceship landing on the Moon before 2030, piloted by a monkey.

She gives the bet to Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride, 54) as her Christmas present.

The wager becomes the talk of Weatherfield and leaves Blanche (Maggie Jones, 73) the butt of jokes down at the Rovers Return, making her snarl: “Go on then. Make fun of a weak vulnerable widow.”

Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver, 42) quips: “I’ve seen burly bank robbers with balaclavas and sawn-off shotguns more vulnerable than you.”
