Take That will reportedly appear on the reinstated Top Of The Pops Christmas Special, singing their hit 'Greatest Day'.

According to The Sun, the group will be joined for the event by Girls Aloud, Pussycat Dolls, Duffy, Kaiser Chiefs, Dizzee Rascal and Calvin Harris, McFly and the X Factor winner.

Mark Owen, who promised a "special performance" said: "Top Of The Pops is a national institution. It should come back every week."

The BBC confirmed the return of the special in November following fears that the show was to be axed, with Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates confirmed to present.

:cheer: Looking forward to this.

A campaign has been launched to get Top Of The Pops back on the BBC.

Music industry plugger Dylan White is lobbying the broadcaster to bring the music entertainment show back in a 5.30pm slot between Blue Peter and The Six O'Clock News.

"The content of the programme would be driven by [Top Of The Pops] magazine and the Top 40, so would heavily feature the likes of High School Musical, Rihanna, Sugababes, Katy Perry and, yes, some X Factor stars," he told Music Week.

Responding to the campaign, Director of BBC Vision Jana Bennett admitted that there is an audience for the show, but said she is unsure that the timeslot proposed would be appropriate.

Top Of The Pops was axed in 2006 following several unsuccessful revamps. It has returned for Christmas specials every year since.

The BBC's music controller has said that it is unlikely that Top Of The Pops will return to the channel in a regular weekly slot.

According to the BBC, Andy Parfitt said that it was more likely that the music show will return in other "event-driven moments", such as the recent Christmas, New Year's Eve and Comic Relief specials.

He said: "It's got a mythical status...but I don't think we should get hung up on that one programme. We are a long way from [BBC1 controller] Jay Hunt recommissioning Top Of The Pops in its old-school form on BBC One.

"The days are gone when we can make a programme and just put it out there."

Top Of The Pops ran for 42 years before bowing out in July 2006, in a finale hosted by Jimmy Saville, Tony Blackburn and Mike Reid.

TOTP is history and technology is to blame, record sales are no longer recorded by how many cd's are bought from a record store each week but by how many DL hits on the internet and that is unfair as there maybe some songs played on the radio that listeners don't catch the name of the artist.
